Closed parks: Barrington Tops National Park temporarily closed due to flooding / severe weather

Barrington Tops National Park is closed from Tuesday 20th May 2025 until further notice due to impacts from flooding and severe weather. Penalties apply for non-compliance.

This closure will be reassessed daily and the park will reopen when conditions are safe.

There is currently no vehicle access to Barrington Tops Forest Rd from the east (Gloucester side) due landslips and a council bridge outage. Vehicle access to the southern section of Barrington Tops NP is also blocked by landslips.

Safety alerts: Visitor Advisory - Road Access to Crowdy Bay National Park Campgrounds

Due to ongoing wet weather, road access to Crowdy Bay National Park has significantly deteriorated. Although a grader is on standby, the persistent rain over recent months has prevented essential maintenance works from being carried out.

 

Recommended Access Route:
For visitors with 2WD, low-clearance vehicles or those towing caravans, the most suitable access to Diamond Head, Indian Head, and Kylies Beach campgrounds is via Diamond Head Road from the north, through Laurieton. To reach Laurieton, take the Kew exit from the Pacific Highway.

 

Access from Moorland and Harrington along Diamond Head Road is CLOSED due to significant water over road, slippery and dangerous road surface.

 

Indian Head Camping Area is CLOSED.

Closed areas: Diamond Head Precinct Walking Trail Closures

Walking trails in the Diamond Head section of Crowdy Bay National Park will be affected by closures from 3rd March 2025 for maintenance and erosion repair. 

The works will involve repairing significant erosion sustained in the 2022 floods, along reinstating drainage, installing stairs, seating and other supportive infrastructure. The walking trails affected are: 

  • Diamond Head Loop walk 
  • Forest walking track 

Walking trails will be closed during the week, with every effort made to reopen trails for weekends and public holidays. 

The works are expected to take four months to deliver, however this is weather dependant.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is conducting an aerial baiting program from 11th May 2025 to 1st June 2025.

The operation will use 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of wild dogs and foxes.

The program will take place in Barakee National Park, Barrakee State Conservation Area, Biriwal Bulga National Park, Bugan Nature Reserve, Ghin-Doo-Ee National Park, Goonook Nature Reserve, Talawahl Nature Reserve, Tapin Tops National Park and Wallamba Nature Reserve

The program is designed to minimise predator impacts on wildlife, especially threatened species and to minimise the impact of wild dogs on neighbouring stock.

Signs will be placed at the entry to the baiting location. Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW National Parks managed lands. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Closed parks: Lake Innes SCA closure for bridge replacement

The timber bridge on the Point Road Fire Trail in Lake Innes State Conservation Area is being replaced due to damage sustained during the 2022 flood/storm event. It requires replacement to improve the condition and safety of the creek crossing for ongoing effective fire management and visitor access. 

Please note that the Point Road Fire Trail will be closed to all access during the term of the works, anticipated to commence in mid-May through to the end of June 2025, weather permitting. This trail provides the only access into Lake Innes SCA, therefore the entire reserve will be closed to all public access during the works program.

Adverse weather conditions have caused erosion to some access trails to Werrikimbe NP. Hastings Forest Way remains the best access to Brushy Mountain and Plateau Beech Campgrounds and 4WD vehicles are recommended. 

Cockerawombeeba Road is not suitable for 2WD vehicles and access via this road should be avoided. 

Visitors should check the depth of waterway crossings before driving vehicles through, particularly at Forbes River crossing on Racecourse Road.

National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will be conducting a ground baiting program in Kumbatine National Park from Monday 5th May 2025 to Tuesday 5th August 2025. The operation will use 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of wild dogs. Closed areas: Closed roads due to Ex-tropical cyclone Alfred in New England National Park

Closed roads in New England National Park until 31 August due to Ex-tropical cyclone Alfred. Road blocks have been installed on the Horseshoe road to prevent vehicle movements at the Killikrankie Mountain Lookout intersection in the north and at Kilprotay road Intersection to the south. In addition, Kilprotay road has developed a natural road blockage about 3.5 km from the intersection with the Horseshoe road.

Two significant events have been identified, affecting the roading network in New England National Park:

  • Horseshoe road – culvert blow out and undermining of road, no through access
  • Kilprotay road – major landslip (~3.5km from the top intersection with the Horseshoe road), no through access
  • Gaddes Ridge road - major landslip, no through access

 

These closures will remain in place until geohazard assessments can be undertaken and works completed. Penalties apply for non-compliance.

Construction is complete on the Ngambaa Feral Predator-Free Area which has necessitated the closure of roads in the reserve for visitor safety.

 

Cedar Park picnic area will remain open and available for visitor access. 

 

The following roads are subject to permanent closure as part of the construction and operation of the feral predator free area: 

  • Wittigs Road
  • parts of Stockyard Creek Road
  • Seams Road
  • Jacks Road
  • Buds Crossing Road

 

Construction works were completed in August and the 23k of fencing is complete. 

 

Construction works have included:

  • clearing the fence corridor
  • building the fence
  • installing bridge and culvert crossings.

 

Closed areas: Closed for ground pest control operations

Pest animal control shooting operations will also occur in these areas

Shooting operations will occur on select nights throughout this period. The operations will run from sunset to sunrise in areas that are closed for public access.

Clarence Valley Council are conducting extensive roadworks closing the Old Grafton Road (Old Glen Innes Road) between Newton Boyd and Buccarumbi. Access to Dalmorton campground is by the Old Grafton Road from the Glen Innes (Western) end only, or from Chaelundi Road from the south. To access Chaelundi Road you will need to either enter via Marengo Road at Hernani, or via Sheepstation Creek Road at Dundurrabin. These roads are only suitable for 4WD vehicles and off-road caravans.

Please be aware this closure may add significantly to travel time to and from the campground. At this stage works are scheduled until the end of June 2025.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is undertaking a Felixer feral cat pest management program the Gloucester Tops part of the park from Friday 28 March 2025 to Friday 19 September 2025.

This program is designed to minimise the impact of feral cats on wildlife, especially the endangered rufous scrub-bird and broad-toothed rat. There will be signs at all baiting locations.

The operation will involve the use Felixer 1080 cartridges, containing 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison, dispensed by a Felixer unit, for the control of feral cats.

Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW national parks and reserves. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Feral horses move through this campground day and night. Campers at Little Murray and Polblue campgrounds should set up tents as close to their vehicles as possible.

 

Aggressive horse behaviour can pose a safety risk for visitors. Aggressive behaviour includes snorting, head bobbing, stomping front legs, ears erect, aggressive stance and approaching in an aggressive manner.

 

What to do around aggressive horses:

· avoid the animals, especially if a stallion is present and there are mares nearby

· retreat to your vehicle

· wave your arms around and make lots of noise

· walk in a group rather than as an individual

· always be aware of your immediate surroundings.

Recent rain events have resulted in some sections of the Coastal Walk in Sea Acres National Park becoming eroded and slippery. Phytophthora is a mould that causes dieback in plants. It's been found on the plateau in Barrington Tops National Park, predominantly on the Watergauge trail between Beean Beean and Black Swamp. The affected area is under quarantine with absolutely no visitor access.

Phytophthora is readily spread by mud carried by walkers' shoes and mountain-bike tyres. There are boot wash stations across the plateau for walkers to use, to ensure their boots 'Start clean, Stay clean'.
