Closed parks: Reserves closed due to severe weather event

A number of National Parks and Wildlife Service reserves will be closed to vehicles until further notice due to damage from severe weather event. These include:

  • Berrico National Reserve
  • The Glen National Reserve

Landslips, collapsed bridges and culverts and hazardous trees have been reported across many areas. For your safety, please avoid these reserves until damage assessments can be made and any safety issues rectified.

Closed areas: Rocky Crossing walk partially closed due to works

Rocky Crossing walk is currently closed above Blue Gum Loop through to the Rocky Crossing turnoff due to track works. Works have been delayed due to wet weather and the reopening date is not known at this stage.

You can still access Rocky Crossing falls from Williams Top picnic area. Williams River picnic area and Blue Gum Loop walk remain open but take care on Blue Gum Loop as contractors may be operating in the area. Follow onsite signage and directions from staff and contractors.

Williams Top Road has been closed by Forestry Corporation of NSW (FCNSW) due to a landslip. The closure affects access to the following areas in this park:

  • Lagoon Pinch picnic area
  • Corker trail
  • Wombat Creek campground
  • Careys Peak (via Corker trail)
  • Rocky Crossing walk

Alternate access via Chichester State Forest (Allyn River) may be available but is subject to regular flooding and varied road conditions.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is conducting an aerial baiting program in this park from Saturday 8 October to Friday 14 October 2022.

The operation will use 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of wild dogs and foxes.

The program is designed to minimise predator impacts on wildlife, especially threatened species, and to minimise the impact of wild dogs on neighbouring stock.

Signs will be placed at the entry to the baiting location. Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW National Parks managed lands. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

The Bombah Point ferry will be closed from Monday 30 May 2022, and will recommence operation on Friday 30 September 2022. This is so essential maintenance and survey inspection work (out of water slipping) can be done.

Oxley Highway between Port Macquarie and Walcha is subject to part closures on weekdays until 16 December 2022.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) conducted an ongoing aerial baiting program in this park between Monday 29 August and Wednesday 31 August 2022. Bait may be in this area for a period of time following these dates.

Meat baits and canid pest ejectors (CPE’S) containing 1080 sodium fluoroacetate poison are laid in this park.

The program is designed to minimise predator impacts on wildlife, especially threatened species, and to minimise the impact of wild dogs on neighbouring stock.

All baiting locations will be identifiable by signs.

Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW National Parks managed lands. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Burraga Swamp walking track is closed to vehicles until further notice. This is due to the closure of Mount Allyn Road in Chichester State Forest as a result of wet weather and land slips.

The main access road to Barrington Tops Plateau from Gloucester has been closed by NSW Forestry Corporation until further notice due to serious damage caused during a weather event.

You can only access campgrounds and visitor precincts located on the plateau from the western side via Scone. Barrington Tops Forest Road (also known as the Scone-Gloucester Road) is closed between Cobark Park picnic area and Dilgry Circle intersection. There is no access from Gloucester to Scone on this road.

Road re-opening dates are unknown at this stage, however NSW Forestry Corporation is working on restoring the road. This media release has more information.

NPWS recommends that access to Gloucester Tops Road past the campground should be via 4WD or SUV only, during wet weather. The combination of on-going wet weather and recent roadworks has meant some sections of the road may becoming slippery in wet conditions.

The following 4WD access trails are closed to vehicles from Monday 30 May 2022 due to the annual winter closure:

  • Thunderbolts trail (between Barrington Tops Forest Road and Pheasants Creek Road)

Tubrabucca Road is closed until further notice between Barrington trail (central) and Paddys Ridge trail due to multiple bridge failures.

An engineer has assessed the bridges and deemed them unsafe to all traffic. NPWS are working towards replacing the bridges as soon as possible.

Closed areas: Phytophthora quarantine area - Barrington Tops National Park

Phytophthora is a mould that causes dieback in plants. It's been found on the plateau in Barrington Tops National Park, predominantly on the Watergauge trail between Beean Beean and Black Swamp. The affected area is under quarantine with absolutely no visitor access.

Phytophthora is readily spread by mud carried by walkers' shoes and mountain-bike tyres. There are boot wash stations across the plateau for walkers to use, to ensure their boots 'Start clean, Stay clean'.
