Closed areas: Upper Avon Road closed due to severe weather event

Update June 2023: Contractors have completed work on the landslips, bridge and culverts on Upper Avon Road, in Berrico NR, with more culvert and flood damage works to follow. Upper Avon Road in Berrico Nature Reserve is currently closed to all vehicles between Berrico Road and Berrico Creek Road. There is a failed bridge on Upper Avon Road in Avon River State Forest. 

A number of NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service reserves have closures to vehicles due to damage from severe weather events. These include:

  • Berrico Nature Reserve
  • The Glen Nature Reserve

Landslips, collapsed bridges and culverts and hazardous trees have been reported across many areas. For your safety, please avoid these reserves until damage assessments can be made and any safety issues rectified.

Closed parks: Reserve closed due to hazardous trail conditions

Berrico Nature Reserve is closed to all users due to hazardous trail conditions following recent wet weather. Remediation works will be undertaken and trafficable sections of the reserve reopened as soon as possible. Penalties apply for non-compliance.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is conducting an aerial baiting program in the following areas from Saturday 6 May 2023 to Saturday 20 May 2023:

  • The Glen Nature Reserve

The operation will use 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of wild dogs and foxes.

The program is designed to minimise predator impacts on wildlife, especially threatened species, and to minimise the impact of wild dogs on neighbouring stock.

Signs will be placed at authorised public entrances to the baiting location. Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW National Parks managed lands. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Safety alerts: Damaged Bridge on Lone Pine Rd

Lone Pine Road between Italia Road and Drews Road in Wallaroo State Forest is closed while damage to a bridge is being repaired.

Careys Peak Lookout will be closed to all visitors from Wednesday 14th June 2023 to allow NPWS to undertake a major safety upgrade to the site. The closure is anticipated to be in place until Friday 23rd June 2023 - weather dependant.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is conducting a wild dog and fox control program (trapping) in Monkerai Nature Reserve, Black Bulga State Conservation Area, Columbey National Park and Columbey State Conservation Area from 12 June 2023 to 30 June 2023.

The program is designed to minimise predator impacts on wildlife, especially threatened species, and to minimise the impact of wild dogs on neighbouring stock. Works are conducted in collaboration with Local Land Services and neighbouring landowners.

Signs will be placed at main entrances to the affected reserves. Park users should keep to the middle of trails and not interfere with traps.

Neighbours and park users are reminded that domestic pets are not permitted in these NPWS reserves.

Closed parks: Reserves closed due to severe weather event

Update June 2023: Contractors have commenced work on the landslips  and culverts in The Glen NR. Works have been completed on eight landslips, two bridges and seven  culverts,  with additional  culvert repairs and replacement works to follow. The Glen Nature Reserve remains closed to all visitors due to a number of landslips and failed culverts.

June 2023 Update: Works are progressing well with the current weather conditions. New toilet facilities have been installed and completed. The re-modelling of the campground areas are iwell underway. 

Gummi Falls campground is currently closed for upgrades - the length of this closure is very weather dependent.

This closure also means there is no vehicle access to Bullock Brush, Tugalow and Thunderbolts (between Barrington Tops Forest Road and Pheasants Creek Road) trails.

Closed areas: Jerusalem Creek Trail Part Closure

Part of the Jerusalem Creek Trail is closed for pedestrian bridge replacement and trail works. The closure affects the middle part of the walk between the falls and the southern loop. Visitors can still access the picnic area (and falls) as well as the southern loop (and carpark) but there is no connection between the two areas along the walking track. The closure is expected to last approximately 8 weeks.

Safety alerts: Williams Top Road closed

Williams Top Road has been closed by Forestry Corporation of NSW (FCNSW) due to a landslip. Planning has been conducted and repairs will be undertaken as soon as possible. The closure affects access to the following areas in this park:

  • Lagoon Pinch picnic area
  • Corker trail
  • Wombat Creek campground
  • Careys Peak (via Corker trail)
  • Rocky Crossing walk

Alternate access via Chichester State Forest (Allyn River Rd) may be available but is subject to flooding and varied road conditions.

Closed areas: Seasonal Closure of Barrington Tops NP 4WD trails

The following 4WD trails are closed to all public vehicles from Thursday 1 June 2023 to Saturday 30 September 2023 for the winter seasonal closure:

  • Barrington trail - south
  • Barrington trail - central
  • Paddys Ridge trail
  • Butchers Swamp trail
  • Bullock Brush trail
  • Thunderbolts trail (between Barrington Tops Forest Road and Pheasants Creek Road)
  • Tugalow trail

Vehicle access to Junction Pools and Little Murray campgrounds and associated walking tracks and facilities is closed during this time. Visitors can still access all these campgrounds, walking tracks and facilities on foot or by bicycle.

Some roads within Myall Lakes National Park are temporarily closed due to the impacts of recent severe weather. The closed roads are:

  • Nerong Road (southern section)
  • Masons Bend trail
  • Goochs Road and Sugarloaf trail.

Link Trail between Gloucester Tops (Kerripit Rd carpark) and Wombat Creek campground will be closed to all visitors from Monday 22nd May 2023 for up to 3 weeks - weather dependant - to allow NPWS contractors to undertake essential trailside vegetation management.

Wombat Creek campground remains open during this period with visitors still able to access it from either Lagoon Pinch / The Corker or Barrington Trail / Junction Pools.

Closed areas: The Mungo Track detour due to flood damage

The boardwalk between Tamboi trail and Brambles Green campground is closed due to flood damage.

You will need to follow the detour on The Mungo Track at Mungo Brush. Please follow the walking track to the beach and then walk south for 4km.

Take the slashed management trail which connects the beach to Mungo Brush Road to rejoin The Mungo Track route.

Closed areas: Phytophthora quarantine area - Barrington Tops National Park

Phytophthora is a mould that causes dieback in plants. It's been found on the plateau in Barrington Tops National Park, predominantly on the Watergauge trail between Beean Beean and Black Swamp. The affected area is under quarantine with absolutely no visitor access.

Phytophthora is readily spread by mud carried by walkers' shoes and mountain-bike tyres. There are boot wash stations across the plateau for walkers to use, to ensure their boots 'Start clean, Stay clean'.
