Safety alerts: Changed conditions due to flooding

The overnight wilderness walk and Bicentennial National trail require several river crossings. The catchment is currently full and experiencing intermittent flooding. River conditions can change rapidly without warning. Please avoid entering fast flowing rivers and streams.

Remember, it’s never safe to drive, ride or walk through flood waters. Check Live Traffic NSW for up-to-date information about road closures. For assistance during severe weather visit the NSW SES website. In life-threatening situations call emergency services on Triple Zero (000).

Safety alerts: Ebor Falls open - Facilities may be fire-affected

The Ebor Falls visitor precinct in Guy Fawkes River National Park is open. However the park is fire-affected and facilities within Ebor Falls picnic area have also been affected.

Access to Chaelundi campground, the Escarpment walk and Misty Creek lookout in Guy Fawkes River National Park is only possible from the southern end of Chaelundi Road at Dundurrabin. Chaelundi Road from the northern end is closed due to bridge damage sustained in bushfires.

Closed areas: Road Closures due to wet weather

Due to wet weather Norm Jolly picnic area will be closed due to flooding of the Nymboida River.  Access to Platypus Flats and Cod Hole Camping areas is only available via Cascade.  With ongoing wet weather these closures may be in place for several days. Safety alerts: Cod Hole campground access

Forest harvesting operations are occurring in Wild Cattle Creek State Forest, adjacent to Moses Rock Road, on the way to Cod Hole campground.

Harvesting contractors may install temporary road closures for public safety on the road. To gain access or exit to Cod Hole campground, please use the two-way radios provided at the closure gates and call the contractor for permission to traverse the road. Do not drive through closed gates before gaining permission.

Closed areas: Fire trails closed

The following fire trails are closed until further notice due to damage from recent wet weather:

  • Duck Creek
  • Butlermine, south of the intersection with the road to Butlers Tin Mine

Carpet Snake fire trail has reopened. However, due to trail conditions it is restricted to 4WD only, and drivers should be cautious due to rough terrain.

NPWS is monitoring the conditions and will re-open the trails as soon as possible.

Safety alerts: Degraded road conditions - 4WD only and horse float restrictions

Please be aware road conditions are degraded due to recent heavy rains and flooding. Access on all roads is limited to 4WD only, and is currently unsuitable for the towing of horse floats.

Spirabo Forest Way is especially degraded. It runs through Capoompeta National Park from Ten Mile Road in the south, and continues through the western side of Washpool National Park where it joins Scrub Road in the north. Please be cautious and drive to road conditions. Do not attempt to access the reserves while towing a horse float.

It will be ongoing in the park between Sunday 1 August 2021 and Monday 28 February 2022. The program is being undertaken to protect threatened shorebirds.

The baiting area will be identifiable by signs.

Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW national parks and reserves. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Access to Doon Goonge campground is not possible from the north on Chaelundi Road. This is due to bridge damage sustained during bushfires in the Dalmorton area. The best route is from the south via Chaelundi Road and then Quartz Road.

Closed areas: All walking tracks closed from Barokee campground

Due to recent weather events impacting bushfire recovery works, there is currently no access to any walking tracks from Barokee campground (accessible off Round Mountain Road via the Waterfall Way) in Cathedral Rock National Park.

Please note:

  • All walking tracks are still accessible from Native Dog campground (accessible via Guyra Road). But please be aware of extra distances involved in walks when entering from the Native Dog campground entrance, including the Cathedral Rock track.
  • The Barokee to Native Dog Creek walk cannot be completed due to this closure, and all walks departing from Native Dog campground will have to return to Native Dog campground.

We apologise for any inconvenience that this closure may cause.

Woolgoolga Creek picnic area is closed due to the access road collapsing as a result of flooding. The Falls walking track is also closed due to flood damage. Assessment and design works are underway, and works will be scheduled pending weather and contractor availability.

Ugly Corner Falls walking track is damaged due to flooding. Surfaces may be uneven due to erosion.

Please follow all signage and don't enter areas that are fenced off. Due to recent rainfall creek levels can change rapidly. It is unsafe to swim or attempt to cross rivers that are flooded.

Closed areas: Road closure

Some areas of this park are closed until further notice due to the demolition of a bridge from a past flooding event.

The closed areas include the 4WD access to North Washpool, an area also known as Washpool rest area, entering from Baryulgil onto Collum Collum Road. The bridge is washed away at the junction of Washpool Creek and Collum Collum Road.

Please note:

  • Washpool National Park’s 2WD entrance off Gwydir Highway onto Coachwood Drive and Washpool Forest Way is open.
  • Bellbird campground, Coombadjha campground and the Granites lookout and picnic areas are accessible.

Safety alerts: New England Wilderness Walk wet weather warning

The Bellinger River catchment has experienced above average rainfall over the past few months and river levels can rise quickly with rain.  River crossings on the Wilderness Walk become extremely dangerous when river levels rise and walkers may become stranded.

Do not do the walk during periods of high river levels or forecast rainfall.

Check the Bureau of Meteorology for river levels and rainfall before setting off.
