Safety alerts: Take care on tracks and surfaces

Erosion and surface damage has occurred on walking tracks, road surfaces within national parks of the Hastings Macleay Area following significant and prolonged rainfall events. Remediation works are scheduled as weather permits.

Closed areas: South Miners Beach stairs closed for maintenance

South Miners Beach stairs to Lighthouse Road are currently closed for maintenance until Monday 31 October 2022. 

The access from Shelley Beach to the lighthouse is still open.

Oxley Highway between Port Macquarie and Walcha is subject to part closures on weekdays until 16 December 2022.

This may impact access to a number of national parks and reserves in the area.

Safety alerts: Access to Bird Tree Picnic Area - 4WD only

Access to Bird Tree Picnic Area is currently affected by a landslip on Grey Gum Ridge Road, and wet conditions due to ongoing recent rainfall. It is not suitable for 2WD access. 

4WDs can access Bird Tree Picnic Area by using Haydons Road off the Pacific Highway, which then joins Stoney Creek Trail and Grey Gum Ridge Road to access the picnic area from the north. There is no access on Grey Gum Ridge Road south of Bird Tree Picnic Area (towards the towers) due to a significant land slip.

The barbecues at Pines picnic area are out of order. There has been damage to the structure and gas bottles have been removed. Plans are in place to have this replaced. The toilets and picnic tables are still operational.

Closed parks: Yessabah Nature Reserve permanently closed

Access to Yessabah Nature Reserve is permanently closed to unauthorised personnel. The former quarry area has limestone rock faces that are unstable and prone to rock fall. Other areas of the reserve are geologically unstable.

Closed areas: Area permanently closed - Mermaid Pools

Access to Mermaid Pools is permanently closed including for swimming. Sudden large swells and tides create major waves that wash over the rocks and pools.

Do not access this area. The severe conditions at this site have caused a number of significant injuries and deaths in the past.

Mermaid Pools have never been a designated visitor site due to the extreme nature of the surf and tides at this location. There is no approved public access walking track to Mermaid Pools.

Safety alerts: New England Wilderness Walk wet weather warning

The Bellinger River catchment has experienced above average rainfall over the past few months and river levels can rise quickly with rain.  River crossings on the Wilderness Walk become extremely dangerous when river levels rise and walkers may become stranded.

Do not do the walk during periods of high river levels or forecast rainfall.

Check the Bureau of Meteorology for river levels and rainfall before setting off.

Aerial baiting is scheduled for Monday 29 August to Friday 2 September 2022.

The operation will use 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of wild dogs and foxes.

The program is designed to minimise predator impacts on wildlife, especially threatened species, and to minimise impact of wild dogs on neighbouring stock.

Signs will be placed at the entry to the baiting location. Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW National Parks managed lands. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Closed areas: Sea Acres Rainforest boardwalk partial closure

The Sea Acres Rainforest boardwalk is partially closed from Monday 8 August 2022 to allow for major ugrades to the structure.

Appoximately 500m of the boardwalk remains open, allowing out and back access. The access fee is reduced to half price. 

This work will be ongoing until mid-November 2022, and its duration will be weather-dependent. The partial closure will be reviewed on Tuesday 1 November 2022.

The Rainforest Centre and Rainforest Cafe remain open 7 days.
