Closed areas: Walking trail closures due to significant rain and flooding

The following walking tracks in Arakoon National Park are closed from Monday 19 April to Monday 17 May 2021 due to a significant localised rain and flooding resulting in unsafe conditions:

  • Monument Hill walking track
  • Bridle Trail walking track

Closed areas: Seafront Road closed for drone survey

Seafront Road will be closed from 7am 20 April to 7am 21 April 2021 for a drone survey. The survey will cover the sloped areas below the Trial Bay Gaol through to the quarry. Drone surveys are part of the geo-technical risk and topographic assessments relating to the landslips in this area.

The Seafront area will be closed to all vehicles and pedestrians for the entire day and barricades with signage to prevent access will be in place during this time.

Closed areas: Area permanently closed - Mermaid Pools

Access to Mermaid Pools is permanently closed including for swimming. Sudden large swells and tides create major waves that wash over the rocks and pools.

Do not access this area. The severe conditions at this site have caused a number of significant injuries and deaths in the past.

Mermaid Pools have never been a designated visitor site due to the extreme nature of the surf and tides at this location. There is no approved public access walking track to Mermaid Pools.

Safety alerts: Potential rock falls - Little Bay and Trial Bay

Closed parks: Hastings-Macleay area - Many parks closed due to flood damage

Parks in the Hastings-Macleay area are closed due to flood and storm damage.

Camping is not permitted in closed parks.

These closures are due to widespread flooding and extensive damage to roads, campgrounds and other park facilities. Parks will be reopened as soon as they are safe to access. Some parks will remain closed for extended periods.

Safety alerts: Hungry Gate campground - 4WD only access

Hungry Gate campground and beach access road is via 4WD vehicles only.

Hungry Road is currently not suitable for 2WD vehicles due to flooding of the causeway near the campground entry. 2WD access will be restored once the water in the causeway naturally drains over the coming week. Take care and drive safely.

Safety alerts: New England Wilderness Walk - Not suitable during rain or high river levels

The Bellinger River catchment has experienced above average rainfall over the past few months and river levels can rise quickly with rain.  River crossings on the Wilderness Walk become extremely dangerous when river levels rise and walkers may become stranded.

Do not do the walk during periods of high river levels or forecast rainfall.

Check the Bureau of Meteorology for river levels and rainfall before setting off.

Access to Yessabah Nature Reserve is permanently closed to unauthorised personnel. The former quarry area has limestone rock faces that are unstable and prone to rock fall. Other areas of the reserve are geologically unstable.
