Closed areas: Vegetation works on Kulpas, Marramarra Creek and Marramarra Ridge trails

Vegetation maintenance works will take place on Kulpas, Marramarra Creek and Marramarra Ridge trails from Monday 5 December until Friday 23 December 2022 between the hours of 7am and 5pm, weather dependent. Please be mindful of machinery on the trail and follow the directions of workers. Visitors may experience some delays.

Safety alerts: Munmorah SCA - Beaches Closed due to dangerous conditions

Birdie Beach, Frazers Beach and Moonee Beach in Munmorah State Conservation are closed  due to dangerous surf conditions and rips. Please stay out of the water and supervise children. Life guards are on duty at Frazers Beach between 9 am and 16:45 = Saturday and Sunday. In the event of an emergency ring "000" immediately.

There is no access to the Glow Worm Tunnel from the Wolgan Valley, Pagoda Track or Old Coach Road car park. The only access to this walking track is via the Glow Worm tunnel car park on the Newnes plateau which is re-opening at 9am on 10 December 2022.

Bradleys Head Road is closed at the Rifle Wall on Wednesday 14 December 2022 due to maintenance works resulting from a rockfall. There is no vehicle access to Bradleys Head-Booraghee Amphitheatre. Parking is available at Rifle Wall and Athol Hall carparks.

The Amphitheatre precinct remains open to walkers, who should take care due to works in the vicinity.

Closed areas: Glow Worm Tunnel Road closed at Galah Mountain Road intersection

Glow Worm Tunnel Road on the Newnes Plateau is closed from the Galah Mountain Road intersection until 9am on the 10th December 2022. Please note:

  • This closure includes access to Glow Worm Tunnel carpark and the Old Coach Road carpark
  • There is no walker access to Glow Worm Tunnel during this time.
  • Glow Worm Tunnel carpark is expected to open at 9am Saturday 10 December 2022. 
  • Galah Mountain Road and access to Rocky Creek canyon is open.

This closure is to allow for upgrade works at the Glow Worm Tunnel carpark.

Closed areas: Parts of Blue Mountains National Park closed

Many walking tracks, roads and fire trails within Blue Mountains National Park remain closed following sustained wet weather causing subsidence hazards, major landslides or infrastructure upgrades. 

The following areas are closed:

Katoomba and Leura

  • Honeymoon Bridge is closed due to rockfall risk
  • Federal Pass between Leura Forest and Dardanelles Pass junction below the Three Sisters is closed due to track maintenance.
  • Gordon Falls track and lookout are closed due to major upgrades.
  • Lone Lyrebird track is closed between Gordon Road and the War Memorial, due to major subsidence.  Detour in place.
  • Lyrebird Dell walking track is closed due to track maintenance.
  • Lillian's Bridge track is closed from Inspiration Point track to Lillians Bridge due to major upgrades. 
  • Prince Henry Cliff walk is closed between Gordon Falls lookout and Olympian lookout, due to landslides. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information.
  • Prince Henry Cliff walk is closed between Echo Point and Cliff View lookout due to major upgrades.
  • Lady Darley track is closed due to major upgrades on Prince Henry.
  • Amphitheatre track is closed due to track repairs.
  • Glenraphael Drive is closed due to major subsidence. Narrow Neck and Golden Stairs are accessible to pedestrians and cyclists from Narrow Neck lookout on Cliff Drive.
  • Ruined Castle and Mount Solitary walking routes are closed due to subsidence.
  • Six Foot Track is closed from Nellies Glen to Megalong Valley. 
  • Lindeman Pass is closed due to a major landslide below Gladstone lookout. 

Wentworth Falls

  • McMahons Lookout Rd will be closed to all traffic from Thursday 1st December until Wednesday 21st December to allow for road improvements.  Red Ridge, Erskine Range (W5) and Centre Mount Fire trails are also included in this closure.  
  • Kings Tableland Road will be closed to all traffic (apart from residential traffic)  from Thursday 1st December until Wednesday 21st December to allow for road improvements.  Access to Andersons Fire Trail available on weekends.  
  • Valley of the Waters track is closed below Sylvia Falls. There is no access to Roberts Pass, Vera Falls, Hippocrene Falls or Wentworth Falls from Valley of the Waters.
  • Charles Darwin walk is closed where it traverses Council-managed land due to upgrades. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information.
  • National Pass is closed due to landslide.
  • Wentworth Pass is closed due to landslide.
  • Kedumba Valley Rd and Campground is open to pedestrians.  Please be aware of ongoing plant movements. 
  • Ingar Road is closed where it traverses private property at the west end. Ingar campers must walk in via Anderson's or Bedford Roads.

Blackheath, Medlow Bath, Megalong Valley, Mount Victoria and Bells Line of Road

  • Govetts Leap lookout and picnic area are closed for major upgrade work. (opening February 2023)
  • Evans lookout is closed to vehicles for major upgrade work with detours in place. (opening mid December)
  • Grand Canyon car park closed, limited parking at Neates Glen and along Evans Lookout Road. (opening mid December)
  • Grose Valley and Govetts Gorge access routes are closed including Horse track, and Rodriguez Pass (Bridal Veil Falls) due to landslides.
  • Grose River track is closed from Blue Gum Forest to Victoria Falls. (opening mid December)
  • Pulpit walking track and Pulpit Rock lookout are closed. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information.
  • Perrys Lookdown camping area is closed.

Woodford, Lawson, Springwood

  • Empire Pass is closed for track maintenance.
  • Martin's lookout track and fire trail, Victory track and Magdala Gully track are closed for a helicopter operation on Tuesday 13 December 2022.

Canyons and rock climbing

  • Climbing and canyoning areas in the Blue Mountains are open unless the access road is closed or the site is listed in this alert.

If you plan on embarking on Grade 5 tracks or undertaking off-trail activities, please be aware of the likelihood of changed conditions and consider current safety advice.

Grade 5 tracks and off-trail areas are open, excluding those listed below. Grade 5 tracks are for very experienced bushwalkers with specialised skills such as advanced navigation and emergency first aid. Please visit this page for further information on track grades.

Closed areas: Fort Denison closed

Fort Denison will be closed until late 2023.

Conservation and upgrade works are currently underway. Key elements include the construction of a new accessible wharf and maintenance and upgrade to buildings and services. Fort Denison will be closed to visitors until these works have been completed.

Standard work hours during the construction phase will be between:

  • 7am and 6pm Monday to Friday
  • 8am and 1pm on Saturday

Noise monitoring stations will be set up in Kirribilli and Cremorne to check any over-water noise so that it does not exceed legal levels. It is not expected to be high.

Soft jaw leg traps will be deployed in Munmorah State Conservation Area between the 10th of December through till the 24th of December 2022 targeting wild fox populations in the reserve. Closed areas: Area closed - Pink Caves

Pink Caves are closed to visitors because they are extremely unsafe to visit.

The caves are filled with water at high tide. Even at low tide they can be dangerous, as ocean swell sends unpredictable waves sweeping into the caves and across the rock shelf. Sudden rogue waves can cause serious injury and may drag visitors across the rocks or out to sea.

There’s no lifeguard service in this area and access for emergency services is limited. There’s no approved walking track to this location. Access to the caves involves walking over a rock shelf which is slippery, uneven and dangerous.

Visitors should take care when traversing all rock shelves and coastal areas located within Munmorah State Conservation Area.

Warrah Trig Road is closed to vehicles until further notice due to damage from ongoing rainfall events.

The road has a tendency to develop deep ruts and boggy sections, making it unsafe and impassable for vehicles.

The road is open to pedestrians and cyclists. However, please take care when traversing wet sections as they may be slippery.

Alternate pedestrian access to Warrah lookout is available via Pearl Beach to Patonga fire trail.

The road will be re-opened as soon as it is safe and repair work has been completed.

The visitor precinct at Govetts Leap lookout in Blue Mountains National Park, Blackheath is closed for upgrades from Thursday 11 August 2022 to February 2023.

The carpark and lookout will be closed during construction.

Blue Mountains Heritage Centre and the toilets at Govetts Leap lookout will remain open.

Access to walking tracks will be provided to tracks that are open. Track closures are updated regularly. Check the NPWS alerts page for updates.

The works include improvements to the lookout and carpark, and construction of new accessible pathways in the area.

The 4WD Oberon Colong historic stock route to Yerranderie is only accessible via 4WD vehicles. Recent wet weather has caused slippery conditions with large muddy sections and some deep pot holes. Some creek crossings may be inaccessible for vehicles with low clearance.

North Mackerel track is permanently closed due to a potential risk of rockfalls and unstable cliff edges in the Great Mackerel Beach area.

The only designated land access to or from Great Mackerel Beach is via Mackerel track to the north, which intersects with Resolute track.

Due to land instability and risk to personal safety there is NO THROUGH or RETURN ACCESS to/from the south end of Great Mackerel Beach via The Basin or Mackerel Trail.

Due to land instability and risk to personal safety there is NO THROUGH or RETURN ACCESS to/from the west of Great Mackerel Beach via the North Mackerel track which is closed.

Closed areas: Berowra walking track closure

Berowra walking track, from Berowra to Apple Tree bay, including the Mount Ku-ring-gai access track, is closed until further notice.

There is a significant threat of rockfalls due to slope instability, caused by recent weather events. NPWS will further assess the track and carry out necessary repair works.

Parts of the NSW Central Coast are a declared high risk area due to large swells and hazardous surf conditions. In these high risk areas under the NSW Rock Fishing Safety Act 2016, you are required by law to wear an appropriate life jacket. This includes children and anyone helping you fish. This is regulated by NSW Fisheries and poses an on the spot $100 fine if non-compliant.

Before rock fishing you should always:

Stay safe, always watch the local conditions, never turn your back on the ocean and never fish alone.

If you’re in doubt don’t go out.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service will be conducting a baiting program using manufactured baits, fresh baits and Canid Pest Ejectors (CPEs) containing 1080 poison (sodium fluroacetate) for the control of foxes. The program is continuous and ongoing between 1 August 2022 and 31 January 2023 in Garigal National Park. Don’t touch baits or ejector devices.

All baiting locations are identifiable by signs.

Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW national parks and reserves. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Fox baiting in these reserves is aimed at reducing their impact on threatened species.

Closed areas: Muirs lookout picnic area closed

NPWS has closed Muirs lookout and picnic area effective from Monday 20 June 2022. 

Factors contributing to the closure include:

  • road access is not suitable for 2WD vehicles and has been damaged and eroded following heavy and ongoing rainfall
  • visitor facilities, including picnic tables and toilets, are unsafe and outdated
  • toilets don’t meet NPWS and health standards
  • views from the lookout to the coast have diminished due to grown tall trees and vegetation. 

The surrounding area, including Watagans National Park and neighbouring state forests, have alternative sites for lookouts and picnic areas.

The closest lookouts are located off Mt Faulk Road to the north and include Heaton, Hunter and Macleans lookouts.

Safety alerts: Campbells Point Road Temp Closure - Jilliby SCA

Campbells Point Road and Campbells Point Link Road in the southern section of Jiiliby State Conservation Area will be closed from Wednesday 23 March to Friday 1st April 2022.

The closure is to enable major roadworks to repair the fire trail, for future wildfire response and hazard reduction burning.

Please stay off the fire trail and follow directions on signage, and of NPWS staff and contractors.
