Fire bans: Park fire ban

A park fire ban is in place in this park from Sunday 1 September 2019 and remains in effect until Tuesday 31 March 2020.

Mill Creek and Ten Mile Hollow campgrounds are exempt.

During park fire ban periods, all campfire and solid fuel (wood, heat beads, charcoal, briquettes, hexamine) barbecues and stoves are prohibited. Gas and electric barbecues and cookers are permitted as long as:

  • They're under direct control of an adult
  • The ground within 2m of the barbecue is cleared of all flammable materials
  • There's an adequate supply of water (minimum of a bucket)

If a Total Fire Ban is in place, please contact the local park office before using a gas and or electric barbecue or cooker.

Closed areas: Blue Mountains National Park - closed areas

The following areas of Blue Mountains National Park remain closed due to the bushfire and/or flood damage and associated hazards:

Katoomba area

  • Kings Tableland Road from Queen Victoria Hospital to McMahons Point including Andersons fire trail and cycle route
  • Wentworth Pass, National Pass and Valley of Waters tracks where floods have damaged creek crossings.
  • Dardanelles Pass where landslides have destroyed the track
  • Prince Henry (between Solitary Restaurant and Tarpeian Rock) and Leura Cascades track due to landslides and flood damage.
  • Charles Darwin walk. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information
  • Kedumba and Ruined Castle campgrounds
  • Ruined Castle, Golden Stairs, Tarros Ladders, or Mount Solitary routes
  • Rock climbing areas around the Grose and Narrowneck (all burnt sites including Bowens Creek, Bell Super-crag and Diamond Falls)
  • Wild Dog Mountains routes (including Kanangra to Katoomba, Breakfast Creek, Mobbs Swamp, Katoomba to Mittagong, Coxs River, Yellow Pup Spur
  • The Six Foot track remains closed between Black Range campground to the Jenolan Caves due to dangerous conditions caused by the recent rainfall event that has exacerbated the recent bushfire impacts causing land slips, track erosion and dangerous trees. Crown Lands contractors are busy working towards opening the last short section of track before the end of the February.

Blackheath area

  • Some access roads and lookouts around the Grose Valley (including Mount Hay, Victoria Falls and Point Pilcher.
  • Access tracks into and around the Grose Valley (including Perrys, Mount Banks, Mount Hay, Flat Top, Pierces Pass (Hungerfords), Lockleys Pylon, Victoria Falls Road and walking track and Rodriguez Pass).
  • Green Gully (Dunphys) and Acacia Flat campgrounds.
  • Walking tracks around Blackheath (including Walls Cave, Hanging Rock/Burramoko, Popes Glen, Cliff Top, Rodriguez Pass, Bridal Veil Falls, Braeside walk, Pulpit Rock, and Western Rim)

Glenbrook

  • Due to damage sustained through the flooding, the causeway will be closed to vehicles (pedestrians and cyclists can still go across the causeway - caution is advised due to damage of the normal footpath) Vehicles will only be able to drive to the Jelly Bean pool car park. See list of areas open to walkers/cyclists below.

Mount Wilson

  • Canyons around Mount Wilson, Bells Line of Road and Grose Valley (including all Wollongambe, Serendipity, all Bell Creek, all DuFaurs, all Bowens Creek, Claustral, Yileen, Birrabang, Dalpura, Hat Hill, Pilcher, Katoomba Creek, Fortress and Butterbox/Mount Hay).

Lower Grose area

  • Vale of Avoca lookouts, walking tracks and routes.
  • Burralow campground and surrounding area.

 

The following areas of Blue Mountains National Park are now open:

Katoomba area

  • Katoomba, Leura and Wentworth Falls lookouts and cliff top walking tracks (where not impacted by other closures)
  • Nellies Glen and Devils Hole
  • Six Foot track is currently open to walkers between the Explorers Tree at Katoomba and Black Range campground (including Coxs River, Alum River and Black Range campgrounds).
  • Conservation Hut cafe
  • Kedumba Valley Road to Sublime Point trail (and Sublime Point trail)
  • Narrow Neck cycle route and fire trail (no walking tracks or descents open)
  • Empress
  • Murphys and Ingar Camping Areas - walk in access only
  • Climbing and abseiling areas: Narrowneck, Malatia Point and Wall exiting east. Narrowneck unburnt areas.
  • Faulconbridge Point
  • Blue Gum swamp

Blackheath area

  • Grand Canyon
  • Hat Hill Road is now open to walkers and bike riders all the way to Perrys Lookdown lookout, and Perrys Lookdown camping area, in addition to Wind Eroded cave and Anvil Rock lookout 
  • Govetts Leap lookout and the Blue Mountains Heritage Information Centre, Fairfax track, Evans lookout, Braeside fire trail (not walk)
  • Bells Line lookouts and roads (including Mount Banks and Pierces Pass Roads, Banks Walls cycle and lookout, Walls lookout and Rigby Hill lookout and walk).

Glenbrook area

  • To cyclists/pedestrians only: Euroka, Mount Portal, Jellybean pool, Blue pool, Nepean lookout and fire trail, Redhands Cave and fire trail, Woodford-Oaks trail

 

NPWS will be progressing assessments, treating sites for tree hazards and undertaking minor repairs on damaged infrastructure over the next few months. Some tracks and sites may remain closed for longer periods where major infrastructure needs replacing.

Click Creek fire trail is closed due to extensive storm damage. All roads and visitor precincts in Ku-ring-gai west have now reopened. All tracks and trails are now open, though visitors should take caution as some sections remain affected by recent storms. 

Some areas remain closed due to flooding and unsafe conditions. The closed areas include:

  • Gibberagong Education Centre

The Marramarra Ridge public access road, from Bloodwood Road to the Marramarra Ridge trail gate, should be driven slowly and with care in 2WD vehicles. The road surface has become rough and potholed due to wear and tear, compounded by impacts from heavy rains in February 2020. Roadworks are scheduled to occur prior to July 2020.

The Victory track has changed track conditions due to fallen trees, debris and trip hazards. The trail is rough and steep in sections because of erosion caused by flooding. Take care along this route.

Safety alerts: Rain and flooding

Heavy rains have damaged many tracks and roads in the park and rain is expected to continue. Canyons and creek crossings are flooded. The soil water table is saturated. Therefore water levels could rise to dangerous levels at short notice. Some crossings are already impassable due to flood debris and infrastructure damage. Natural surface roads could be slippery or impassable. Landslips, treefall and rockfall are more likely in these conditions.

Visitors are advised to plan accordingly and avoid flooded or unstable areas. Visitors may have to navigate muddy conditions, unclear paths, fallen trees, flood debris and washouts. Visitors should not cross creeks or rivers when they are flooded or water is over stepping stones.

The Circuit walking track from Boarding House Dam picnic area is closed from Saturday 25 January 2020 due to a major tree fall across the track head. Due to the danger of falling limbs there is no unauthorised access to the walking track or The Moss Wall until the area can be made safe.

Amphitheatre track is closed between Fern Bower track and Leura Cascades (intersection with Round walk) due to a rockfall and the risk of further instability at the site. This closure means that it is not possible to link the Leura Cascades and Fern Bower circuit via Amphitheatre walking track. However, you can divert around Amphitheatre and link the two tracks by using Round walk and a short section of Cliff Drive (be aware of traffic on Cliff Drive).

Safety alerts: Swimming safety in Berowra Valley National Park

Swimming is not advisable in Berowra Creek at certain times as the water may be subject to variable pollution levels and algal blooms. Please refer to the Hornsby Shire Council website before swimming in Berowra Creek.

Prince Henry Cliff walking track is closed between Leura Cascades and Solitary restaurant until further notice. This closure is due to a landslide that has completely blocked the track. An alternative track is available via Leura Cascades Round Walk. Visitors can also walk from Leura Cascades to Solitary restaurant adjacent Cliff Drive but should be wary of traffic.

National Pass remains closed between Valley of Waters and Slacks Stairs. The closure is indefinite following a serious rockfall in November 2017 which killed a worker and seriously injured two others. The area of the rockfall remains dangerous and the subject of external investigation. The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service is reviewing how such geological hazards and visitor access can be managed. Closed areas: Flat Rock track - partial closure

A section of Flat Rock track - from the Killarney Drive entrance to the Downpatrick Street entrance - is currently closed until further notice due to track safety issues where the track passes through private property near Killarney Point:

  • Walkers heading west should exit Flat Rock track at the eastern end of Killarney Drive and use Killarney Drive until you reach Downpatrick Street. Then walk down the street and re-enter Flat Rock track from the Downpatrick Street fire trail.
  • Walkers heading east should exit Flat Rock track at the Downpatrick Street fire trail and use Downpatrick Street, then Killarney Drive until you reach the end of Killarney Drive. Re-enter Flat Rock track from the Killarney Drive entrance.
