Closed areas: Pogsons Trig trail closure

Pogsons Trig trail will be closed from Wednesday 1 July 2020 for upgrade works to improve access for fire-fighting vehicles. These works are expected to be completed by September 2020. During this closure there will be no through track to access the Great North walk from Quarry Road in Dural.

Visitors please note, you are not permitted to cross Hornsby Rifle Range to access the Great North walk.

Closed areas: Visitor areas closed

Many COVID-19 restrictions have now been lifted from visitor precincts and facilities. However, several tracks and trails will remain closed while upgrades and remediation works are completed. These closures include: 

  • Monday 22 June 2020 until further notice - Pogsons Trig trail will be closed while upgrade and remediation works are happening
  • Twin Beaches campground and toilet block remain closed until further notice while upgrade works are conducted
  • Tunks Ridge campground remains closed until further notice while staff assess safety concerns 

The walking track between the end of Canoelands Ridge trail and Gentlemans Halt campground is now accessible. If you plan to visit, walk with caution as some sections of the track may be obstructed by fallen debris.

The closing of toilets and other facilities will be decided on a case-by-case basis, with necessary site assessments considering the management of health and safety risk to visitors and staff, and available resourcing to maintain facilities.

Access to sanitation products and running water cannot be guaranteed. We recommend bringing hand soap, hand wipes and toilet paper with you to maintain good hygiene as advised by the NSW Government.

Please remember to practice appropriate social distancing requirements and good hygiene. From Saturday 13 June 2020, the maximum group size for an outdoor gathering will be increasing from 10 to 20 people. Groups are still expected to maintain social distancing. If you arrive at a national park or other public space and it is too crowded to practice social distancing, it is your responsibility to leave the area. Do not wait to be instructed by NPWS or police.

Safety alerts: Swimming safety in Berowra Valley National Park

Swimming is not advisable in Berowra Creek at certain times as the water may be subject to variable pollution levels and algal blooms. Please refer to the Hornsby Shire Council website before swimming in Berowra Creek.

Swimming at Fishponds is not advised at any time due to heavy water pollution.

Closed parks: Muogamarra Nature Reserve public access season

Muogamarra Nature Reserve will not be opened to the public this August or September 2020 to manage the risk of COVID-19 transmission. The nature reserve is a protected site so visitation is strictly limited to registered opportunities for cultural and environmental learning. Following risk assessment processes, it has been determined that the safest course of action is to suspend public access, including face-to-face guided tours in 2020.

We look forward to recommencing a public access season for this reserve in 2021.

Sections of Magazine and Flat Rock tracks - from the Tipperary Avenue entrance to the Downpatrick Street entrance - are currently closed until further notice. This is because of track safety issues, a fallen tree and the track passing through private property near Killarney Point.

The following parts of Cattai and Scheyville National Parks will be closed each night between sunset and sunrise until Friday 25 September 2020:

  • Migrant Heritage walk
  • Scheyville Camp precinct
  • Scheyville horse riding trails

Closed areas: Changes to Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park precinct closures

Many COVID-19 restrictions have now been lifted from visitor precincts and facilities In Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. However, several tracks and trails will remain closed while upgrades and remediation works are completed. These closures include:

  • Bobbin Head playground
  • The Basin trail
  • The Basin campground and picnic area
  • Mackerel service trail

Berowra track, between Apple Tree Bay and the intersection of Mount Ku-ring-gai track, has now reopened. However if you plan to visit, walk with caution as some sections of the track remain uneven. 

Please remember to practice appropriate social distancing requirements and good hygiene. From Saturday 13 June 2020, the maximum group size for an outdoor gathering will be increasing from 10 to 20 people. Groups are still expected to maintain social distancing. If you arrive at a national park or other public space and it is too crowded to practice social distancing, it is your responsibility to leave the area. Do not wait to be instructed by NPWS staff or police.

Safety alerts: Marramarra Ridge public access road - drive with caution

The Marramarra Ridge public access road, from Bloodwood Road to the Marramarra Ridge trail gate, should be driven slowly and with care in 2WD vehicles. The road surface has become rough and potholed due to wear and tear, compounded by impacts from heavy rains in February 2020. Roadworks are scheduled to occur prior to July 2020.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service is doing 1080 ground baiting using manufactured baits, fresh baits and Canid Pest Ejectors (CPEs) in Sydney Harbour National Park. This includes Chowder Bay and Dobroyd, Bradleys, Georges, Middle and North headlands. North Head includes adjoining land of Sydney Harbour Federation Trust, Australian Institute of Police Management, and Quarantine Station.

The program is continuous and ongoing between 1 February 2020 and 31 July 2020. All baiting locations will be identifiable by signs. Don’t touch baits or ejector devices. Penalties apply for non-compliance.

Please be reminded that domestic pets are not permitted on NPWS estate. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Safety alerts: Swimming safety in Berowra Valley National Park

Swimming is not advisable in Berowra Creek at certain times as the water may be subject to variable pollution levels and algal blooms. Please refer to the Hornsby Shire Council website before swimming in Berowra Creek.

Swimming at Fishponds is not advised at any time due to heavy water pollution.

Safety alerts: Lower steps on Shark Island Wharf closed

The lower 4 steps of Shark Island Wharf are closed due to a safety hazard. Using these steps for berthing, drop-off and pick-up is prohibited. Access is only possible using the upper stairs.

Small vessels and boats may not be able to berth, particularly at low tide.

Closed areas: Casuarina Track closed between Boree Road and Davidson picnic area

Casuarina track between Carrol Creek and Davidson Picnic area, Forestville is closed indefinitely due to the removal of the stairway down to the picnic area after safety concerns. Lyrebird track is the recommended alternative access which connects to the Governor Philip Walk or Ferguson Street. Penalties apply for non-compliance.
