Forecast heavy rainfall may cause flooding of areas in Watagans National Park, Jilliby State Conservation Area, Brisbane Water National Park and Wyrrabalong National Park.

Creek crossings may become impassable with fast flowing water and increased water levels following heavy rainfall.

People planning to visit these parks are urged to check for closures, emergency warnings and severe weather updates from the Bureau of Meteorology and State Emergency Service before heading out.

Remember, it’s never safe to drive, ride or walk through flood waters, so you’ll need to reschedule your visit and avoid travel through areas in this park. Check Live Traffic NSW for up-to-date information about road closures. For assistance during severe weather visit the NSW SES website. In life-threatening situations call emergency services on Triple Zero (000).

Piles Creek Loop walking track is closed from 6am Saturday 1 June to 6am Monday 3 June 2024 due to forecast flooding.

Closed areas: Somersby Falls picnic area and walking track closed

Somersby Falls picnic area and walking track, including access to the waterfalls will be closed until 30 June 2024 while the picnic area is being upgraded.

The proposed upgrade will improve visitor safety, accessibility and protect sensitive cultural heritage.

Consider visiting the nearby Girrakool picnic area less than 5 minutes away which also has waterfalls, walking tracks and a well established picnic area.

Closed areas: Little Beach Trail, Carpark and Campground Closed for Maintenance Work

Little Beach Trail, Carpark and Campground is temporarily closed from 1700 Sunday 26 May 2024 to 1200 Friday 31 May 2024 for trail maintenance works. There will be no access to the area and some intersecting trails during this time. Closed trails include:

  • Little Beach Track from Mourawaring Moor
  • Little Beach Track from Bombi Moor
  • Little Beach Walking Track from Grahame Drive
  • Old Quarry Trail
  • Part of Bouddi Coastal Walk

Alternative access to Putty Beach via the Bouddi Coastal Walk is from Mount Bouddi or Maitland Bay and alternative access to Mourawaring Moor is via Beachview Esplanande, MacMasters Beach. Penalties apply for non-compliance. For more information, contact the Girrakool NPWS office on 43204200.

Warrah Trig Road is closed to vehicles due to a recent increase in illegal activities throughout the area.

The road will remain closed until investigations are completed and further recommendations are made.

The road is open to pedestrians and cyclists.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is conducting an ongoing aerial baiting program from Monday 20th May 2024 to Friday 31st May 2024.

The operation will use 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of wild dogs and foxes. The program will take place in Dharug National Park (NP), Koolewong Flora Reserve (FR), Manobalai Nature Reserve (NR), Parr State Conservation Area (SCA), Wollemi FR, Wollemi SCA, Yengo NP.

The program is designed to minimise predator impacts on wildlife, especially threatened species, and to minimise the impact of wild dogs on neighbouring stock.

Signs will be placed at the entry to the baiting location. Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW National Parks managed lands. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Drivers / vehicles on Watagan Forest Road are advised to expect temporary delays due to road maintenance works being carried out.

Works include vegetation maintenance and surface grading on the road. Traffic control will maintain contraflow through out the works but delays may be incurred.

Safety alerts: Major Roadworks in Jilliby State Conservation Area - Commencing 27 December 2023

Major roadworks are scheduled to commence from Wednesday 27th December 2023 in Jilliby State Conservation Area (Southern Precinct) and part of Ourimbah State Forest.

Partial and intermittent road closures should be expected. The roads that will be affected are:

  • Red Hill Road
  • Prestons Ridge Road
  • Bradleys Point Road
  • Campbells Point Road and 
  • Tooheys Road.

 

Visitors are asked to avoid the area (if possible). Otherwise, please be aware of trucks and machinery using and working on the above roads and to drive to the conditions. Warning signs and traffic control will be in place. Work is expected to be completed by June 2024. The work is funded as part of the Fire Access and Fire Trail (FAFT) program aimed at providing safe and strategic fire trails for fire response and access.

Safety alerts: Ironbark Road access to picnic area - last 850m 4WD only

The last 850m of Ironbark Road (Crown Road) to access Ironbark picnic area is currently limited to 4WD vehicles only.

This section is not suitable for conventional 2WD vehicles due to a severely eroded hill along the Crown Road.

Visitors to this section of the park travelling by conventional 2WD vehicles will need to walk the last 850 metres to access the park and Ironbark picnic area.

The section of Prickly Ridge Road between Watagan Forest Road and Cut-Rock Road is suitable for 4WD vehicles only.

The following fire trails are closed due to illegal 4WD damage:

  • Maculata fire trail west of Jilliby Road to Daniels Point fire trail
  • Eastern section of Daniels Point fire trail to Jilliby Jilliby Creek

There is no vehicle access across Little Jilliby jilliby Creek in either direction. Locked gates are in place in several locations.

Muirs Lookout Picnic Area on Prickly Ridge Road has been closed due to ageing infrastructure, obstructed lookout views to the coast and very low public visitation. Muogamarra Nature Reserve is only open to the public for 6 weeks every year, around spring time.

Due to the sensitive nature of the reserve, access is restricted at other times to approved educational and research activities only.

  • Two picnic areas in Brisbane Water National Park close in the evening:

    • Girrakool picnic area is open 7am to 8pm during daylight savings and is open 7am to 6pm at other times
    • Somersby Falls picnic area is open 8am to 8pm during daylight savings and is open 8am to 5pm at other times

    Other areas of Brisbane Water National Park will be open at all times, however may have to close at times due to poor weather or fire danger.
