Closed areas: Coorongooba campground closed due to flooding

Coorongooba campground is closed from Monday 29 November until Friday 3 December 2021 due to flooding.

Remember, it’s never safe to drive, ride or walk through flood waters, so you’ll need to reschedule your visit and avoid travel through areas in this park. Check Live Traffic NSW for up-to-date information about road closures. For assistance during severe weather visit the NSW SES website. In life-threatening situations call emergency services on Triple Zero (000).

Safety alerts: Flood damage and rising creek levels

Heavy rainfall has resulted in flooding and road surfaces and safety fences have been damaged. You may encounter trees and debris across tracks and roads.

Please be aware creek and river levels are elevated. Do not cross creeks where water levels are high.

Closed areas: Road closed due to flood damage

A number of roads in this park are closed due to storm and flood damage. The closed roads are:

  • California trail - closed until early January 2021
  • Martindale trail - re-opening to permits early January 2021
  • Hunter Main trail:
    • King's Cross to Sheepskin Hut - open
    • Sheepskin Hut trail to Raspberry Junction - closed until mid December 2021
    • Raspberry Junction to Three Ways - closed until mid March 2021
  • Mellong Range trail - closed until mid December 2021

Visitor areas currently closed include:

  • California Hut - closed until early January 2021
  • Sheepskin Hut - open via Commission Road side only

Commission Road is open to traffic. Gates that are in place have been locked, and signs are in place on closed roads. Expected reopening times are subject to weather delays.

Safety alerts: River crossings to campgrounds

Vehicle access to the following camping areas is via natural river bed crossings that require 4WD capability, and are subject to flooding:

  • Wollemi National Park -  Newnes (Cricket Pitch camping area only)
  • Turon National Park - all camping areas
  • Marrangaroo National Park - main camping area
  • Abercrombie River National Park - all camping areas
  • Kanangra Boyd National Park - Kowmung river crossing 

River levels can rise rapidly with heavy rain falling upstream. Please check the weather forecast before leaving home.

Other planned events: Coorongooba campground partial closure

There is no vehicle access or camping in the eastern half of Coorongooba campground. The closure is to allow the area to settle and regenerate after major earthworks. This area has been substantially upgraded as a part of the NSW Government's Improving Access to National Parks Program.

Campground capacity has been reduced to reflect the area closed. New picnic tables and barbeques will be installed during this closure.

Other planned events: 1080 fox baiting program

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service will be conducting a baiting program using manufactured baits, fresh meat baits and/or Canid Pest Ejectors containing 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of foxes. The program will be continuous and ongoing between Monday 8 February 2021 and Friday 31 December 2021 in Wollemi National Park. This program is to protect the endangered Brush Tailed Rock Wallaby.

The following trails will be used as a part of this program:

  • Capertee River trail, downstream of the Coorongooba campground
  • Canobla Gap fire trail
  • Capertee River North trail

All baiting locations will be identifiable by signs.

Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW national parks and reserves. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Closed areas: Big Yango precinct closed

Some parts of Big Yengo National Park are closed for repair until Tuesday 1 March 2022 following significant storm and fire damage. Trails, fords, buildings and other infrastructure need to be repaired to ensure visitor safety and enjoyment.

The closed areas are:

  • Big Yango House
  • Blue Gums campground
  • Mountain Arm campground
  • Big Yango loop trail
  • Yango walking track

Safety alerts: Coorongooba campground - river access

Access to the Coorongooba campground is via a causeway through the Capertee River. This causeway is subject to flooding. The Capertee River can rise unexpectedly with heavy rains falling upstream, making the causeway impassable. Please check the weather forecast before leaving home.

    The Big Yango precinct of the park is within locked gates and requires a permit to enter.
