Closed areas: Parts of Blue Mountains National Park closed

Many walking tracks, roads and fire trails within Blue Mountains National Park remain closed following sustained wet weather causing subsidence hazards, major landslides or infrastructure upgrades. 

The following areas are closed:

Katoomba and Leura

  • Furber Steps to Scenic World and Federal Pass due to rainfall
  • Federal Pass - from Leura Forest to Golden Stairs due to rainfall 
  • Leura Forest - Fern Bower - Federal Pass due to rainfall 
  • Giant Stairs - due to rainfall 
  • Dardanelles Pass - due to rainfall
  • Golden Stairs - due to rainfall
  • Mt Hay Road is closed to vehicles due to slippery conditions and to protect the road surface.
  • Honeymoon Bridge is closed due to rockfall risk
  • Gordon Falls track and lookout are closed due to major upgrades.
  • Lone Lyrebird track is closed between Gordon Road and the War Memorial, due to major subsidence.  Detour in place.
  • Lillian's Bridge track is closure from Inspiration Point track to Lillians Bridge due to major upgrades. 
  • Prince Henry Cliff walk is closed between Honeymoon lookout and Solitary Restaurant on Monday 10 October, Tuesday 11 October and Friday 14 October 2022 for a helicopter operation.
  • Prince Henry Cliff walk is closed between Gordon Falls lookout and Olympian lookout, due to landslides. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information.
  • Prince Henry Cliff walk is closed between Echo Point and Cliff View lookout due to major upgrades.
  • Lady Darley track is closed due to major upgrades on Prince Henry.
  • Amphitheatre track is closed due to track repairs.
  • Glenraphael Drive is closed due to major subsidence. Narrow Neck and Golden Stairs are accessible to pedestrians and cyclists from Narrow Neck lookout on Cliff Drive.
  • Ruined Castle and Mount Solitary walking routes are closed due to subsidence.
  • Six Foot Track is closed from Nellies Glen to Megalong Valley. 
  • Linderman's Pass is closed due to a major landslide below Gladstone lookout. 

Wentworth Falls

  • McMahons Lookout Road is closed to vehicles due to slippery conditions and to protect the road surface.
  • Valley of the Waters track is closed. No access to Empress and Sylvia Falls. There is no access to Roberts Pass, Vera Falls, Hippocrene Falls or Wentworth Falls from Valley of the Waters.
  • Empress Canyon is closed weekdays only from Wednesday 5 October to Thursday 27 October 2022 while repair and stabilisation work is being undertaken on Lilian's track, above the canyon.
  • Charles Darwin walk is closed where it traverses Council-managed land due to upgrades. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information.
  • National Pass is closed due to landslide.
  • Wentworth Pass is closed due to landslide.
  • Conservation Hut, carpark and Valley of Waters picnic area is closed due to major upgrades (opening late October). Detours in place. 
  • Kedumba Valley Road is closed south of the intersection with Sublime Point fire trail due to subsidence. 
  • Kedumba River campground closed due to subsidence on the access road.
  • Ingar Road is closed where it traverses private property at the west end. Ingar campers must walk in via Anderson's or Bedford Roads.

Blackheath, Medlow Bath, Megalong Valley, Mount Victoria and Bells Line of Road

  • Grand Canyon walking tack will be closed from 9am on Saturday 8 October 2022 due to the forecast rainfall.  
  • Braeside, Point Pilcher, Hathill, Victoria Falls, Mt Banks and Pierces Pass Roads are closed to vehicles due to slippery conditions and to protect the road surface.
  • Govetts Leap lookout and picnic area are closed for major upgrade work (opening February 2023)
  • Evans lookout is closed for major upgrade work (opening late October 2022)
  • Grose Valley and Govetts Gorge access routes are closed including Horse track, Rodriguez Pass (Bridal Veil Falls) and Burra Korain to Acacia Flat due to landslides. 
  • Braeside walking track is closed due to upgrades.
  • Grose River track is closed from Blue Gum Forest to Victoria Falls.  
  • Pulpit walking track and Pulpit Rock lookout are closed. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information.
  • Perrys Lookdown camping area is closed.
  • Acacia Flat camping area is closed to Monday 10 October 2022 due to heavy rainfall

Woodford

  • Bedford Road and Murphy's Glen camping area are closed to vehicles due to slippery conditions and to protect road surface.

Faulconbridge, Springwood, Glenbrook

  • Martins Lookout track to Glenbrook Creek is closed for walking track works until Friday 28 October 2022.

Canyons and rock climbing

  • Climbing and canyoning areas in the Blue Mountains are open unless the access road is closed or the site is listed in this alert.
  • Due to the walking track closures there is no access to the Juggler Canyon and Empress Canyon.

Closed areas: Shaws Ridge fire trail closed for track work

Shaws Ridge fire trail is closed Monday to Friday from Wednesday 14 September to Friday 14 October 2022 for maintenance work.

Heavy earthmoving equipment will be in operation. There is no visitor access during this time.

Shaws Ridge fire trail will be open on Saturdays and Sundays.

The following trails remain open for visitors Monday to Friday:

  • Blue Gum Swamp
  • Bees Nest Hill
  • Springwood Ridge

Safety alerts: Forecast heavy rainfall

Due to recent and forecast heavy rainfall, visitors should be prepared. Creeks and rivers may become impassable. Canyons will be hazardous.

Extended rainfall increases the risk of road subsidence, landslides, rockfall and treefall. Incidents can occur without notice, but are most commonly observed on steep slopes below cliff lines.

Visitors should consider weather when planning activities. Tracks and roads can be closed at short notice.

Glenbrook causeway is closed due to flooding from recent rain. There is no pedestrian, cyclist or vehicle access.

The causeway will be assessed daily and will reopen as soon as it is deemed safe.

Please note: Jellybean Pool, Blue Pool, and Glenbrook Gorge track remain open.

Access to parts of southern Blue Mountains National Park via Oberon - Colong Stock Route is closed until further notice due to flooding on Oberon – Colong Stock Route. Penalties apply for non-compliance.

There is no access vehicle or pedestrian access to the section of Ingar Road past the end of Queen Elizabeth Drive. Please do not enter private property.

This means there is no vehicle access to Ingar campground. Campers must hike in via Andersons fire trail or Bedford Road.

The visitor precinct at Govetts Leap lookout in Blue Mountains National Park, Blackheath is closed for upgrades from Thursday 11 August 2022 to February 2023.

The carpark and lookout will be closed during construction.

Blue Mountains Heritage Centre and the toilets at Govetts Leap lookout will remain open.

Access to walking tracks will be provided to tracks that are open. Track closures are updated regularly. Check the NPWS alerts page for updates.

The works include improvements to the lookout and carpark, and construction of new accessible pathways in the area.

Other planned events: Notice of Ongoing 1080 program

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is conducting ongoing ground baiting programs in Blue Mountains National Park from Monday 2nd May to Wednesday 2nd November 2022.

The operation will use meat baits, meat bait products and canid pest ejectors containing 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of wild dogs and foxes.

The program is designed to minimise predator impacts on wildlife, especially threatened species, and to minimise impact of wild dogs on neighbouring stock.

Signs will be placed at the entry to the baiting location. Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW National Parks managed lands. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Other incidents: Oaks Singles track closed while undergoing maintenance

Maintenance works are underway on Oaks Singles track from Friday 28 January 2022, due to erosion issues and major safety concerns.

The track will undergo vegetation maintenance followed by the addition of sandstone surface. The works are to stabilise some sections and rock armouring in poorly drained sections.

In conjunction with the road works on Woodford Oaks Fire Trail, The Oaks Singles track will be open on Saturdays and Sundays.

Closed areas: Glow Worm Tunnel walking track closed north of tunnel

Glow Worm tunnel walking track is closed until further notice from the Four Ways intersection with the Old Coach Road on the north side of the tunnel.

The closure is due to landslips and continuing slope instability. You can still access the tunnel from Wolgan Road by using the Old Coach Road and Pagoda track that leads to the south side of the tunnel.

Access to the tunnel is currently open via Glow Worm Tunnel Road on the Newnes Plateau. This road is currently accessible by 4WD vehicles only.

The Deep Pass campground remains open and can be accessed via the southern access road and connecting walking track, which includes a short, steep, rough section.

An aerial baiting program will also be conducted in these parks from Monday 5 September to Friday 16 September 2022. 

The operation will use 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of wild dogs and foxes.

The program is designed to minimise predator impacts on wildlife, especially threatened species, and to minimise impact of wild dogs on neighbouring stock.

Signs will be placed at the entry to the baiting location. Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW National Parks managed lands. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location.
