Closed areas: Parts of Blue Mountains National Park closed

Many walking tracks, roads and fire trails within Blue Mountains National Park remain closed following sustained wet weather, subsequent geological instability or infrastructure upgrades. As sites are opened, we remind visitors that these areas have been subject to long periods of high rainfall, and landslides, rockfall and treefall can occur without notice.

Please check which areas are closed before travelling.

The following areas are closed:

Katoomba and Leura

  • Giant Stairway
  • Dardanelles Pass
  • No access to Scenic World from Echo Point via Giant Stairs and Dardanelles Pass
  • Federal Pass (west of Scenic World) 
  • Sublime Point fire trail
  • Gordon Falls track and lookout closed due to trackwork
  • Lone Lyrebird track between Gordon Road and the War Memorial, due to a major washout
  • Lillian's Bridge track - closure at junction of Inspiration Point track. No through access to Valley of the Waters and the Conservation Hut due to a major landslide.  
  • Prince Henry Cliff walk between Gordon Falls lookout and Olympian lookout, due to landslides. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information.
  • Prince Henry Cliff walk between Echo Point and Cliff View lookout due to trackwork
  • Lady Darley track to Prince Henry Cliff walk due to track work
  • Amphitheatre track
  • Bridal Veil lookout (west of Leura Cascades) is closed until the end of August 2022 for upgrade works
  • Golf Links lookout to Carleton Road, Leura, is closed Monday to Friday for trackwork

Wentworth Falls

  • Nature track closed between Edinburgh Castle Rock and Lillian's Bridge due to landslide
  • Valley of the Water Track closed at Sylvia Falls.  No access to Roberts pass, Vera Falls, Hipporcrene Falls or Wentworth Falls from Valley of the Waters.
  • No access to Valley of the Water via Roberts Pass.
  • Valley of the Waters closed below Roberts Pass

  • Empress Canyon until Friday 19 August to allow for track repairs.  Empress Canyon remains open on weekends.

  • Govetts Leap Lookout and Picnic Area

  • Braeside walking track due to track work (Braeside Road is open to cyclists and walkers)
  • Evans lookout due to upgrade work
  • Perrys Lookdown campground
  • Base of Pierces Pass to Blue Gum Forest and Burra Korain Flat along Grose River
  • Victoria Falls to Burra Korain Flat
  • Pulpit walking track and Pulpit Rock lookout

Lawson, Woodford, Hazelbrook

  • Murphys Glen Road closed to all  vehicles (open to walkers and cyclists - weekends only) until 19th August to allow for flood repair works.
  • Murphys Glen campground closed until 31 August 2022 to allow for roadworks and campground improvements
  • Bedford Creek Fire Trail is closed to all vehicles and pedestrians until Friday 19th August to allow for flood repairs.  Walkers and cyclists permitted on the weekends.  

Faulconbridge, Springwood, Glenbrook

  • Martins Lookout track to Glenbrook Creek is closed for walking track works until Friday 30 September 2022
  • Euroka campground closed until Thursday 11th August 2022

Canyons and rock climbing

  • Climbing and canyoning areas in the Blue Mountains are open unless the access road is closed or the site is listed in this alert
  • Empress Canyon - Access via West St only.  Exit via Valley of the Waters to Conservation Hut.  

Grade 5 tracks and off-trail areas

Grade 5 tracks and off-trail areas are open, excluding those listed below. Grade 5 tracks are for very experienced bushwalkers with specialised skills such as advanced navigation and emergency first aid. Please visit this page for further information on track grades.

If you plan on embarking on Grade 5 tracks or undertaking off-trail activities, please be aware of the likelihood of changed conditions and consider current safety advice.

Closed Grade 5 tracks:

  • Mount Solitary loop due to landslides near Ruined Castle
  • K2K (Kanangra to Katoomba) access only available from Kanangra Walls. Green Gully, Dunphy's Campground and Narrow Neck trail are closed. Also note: Due to the ongoing wet conditions, Coxs River can flood at short notice and may be impassable. Walkers should check conditions before departing.

  • Horse track
  • Vera Falls and Hippocrene Falls walking tracks

The only access currently open to Burralow campground is via Paterson Range fire trail. Enter near the Bilpin Fruitbowl, via Bells Line of Road. 4WD access only.

The following areas are closed for upgrades until late September 2022:

  • Evans lookout, Blackheath
  • Conservation Hut
  • Valley of the Waters picnic area, Wentworth Falls 

The works include construction of new accessible toilet blocks, pathways and improvements to the lookouts and carparks.

The carparks, toilets and lookouts will be closed during construction.

Walking track access will be provided to walking tracks that are open. Track closures are updated regularly, check the NPWS alerts page for updates.

Closed areas: Govetts Leap lookout

The visitor precinct at Govetts Leap lookout in Blue Mountains National Park, Blackheath is closed for upgrades from Thursday 11 August 2022 to February 2023.

The carpark and lookout will be closed during construction.

Blue Mountains Heritage Centre and the toilets at Govetts Leap lookout will remain open.

Access to walking tracks will be provided to tracks that are open. Track closures are updated regularly. Check the NPWS alerts page for updates.

The works include improvements to the lookout and carpark, and construction of new accessible pathways in the area.

Woodford Oaks trail is closed between Woodford and Glenbrook on weekdays from Monday 1 August to Friday 26 August 2022 for fire trail maintenance.

The following trails in Blue Mountains National Park will be closed on weekdays from Thursday 28 July to Friday 26 August 2022 for maintenance works:

The trails will remain open on Saturday and Sunday.

Safety alerts: Grose Valley walking tracks - Experienced walkers only

Walking tracks that are open in the Grose Valley (Blue Mountains National Park) may become indistinct with fallen trees and wash outs due to recent flood events. Experienced walkers only.

Closed areas: Dunphys campground closed due to landslip

Access along Megalong Valley Road to Dunphys campground is closed due to landslides. Blue Mountains City Council are working on the road with an expected completion date of Wednesday 31 August 2022. This closure may be extended, depending on conditions.

Other incidents: Oaks Singles track undergoing maintenance

Maintenance works are underway on Oaks Singles track from Friday 28 January 2022, due to erosion issues and major safety concerns.

The track will undergo vegetation maintenance followed by the addition of sandstone surface. The works are to stabilise some sections and rock armouring in poorly drained sections.

Ingar Road is closed to all access where it traverses through private property at the end of Queen Elizabeth Drive. There is no vehicle access to Ingar campground. Campers must hike in via a publicly accessible route (via Andersons fire trail or Bedford Road).

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is conducting ongoing ground baiting programs in Blue Mountains National Park from Monday 2nd May to Wednesday 2nd November 2022.

The operation will use meat baits, meat bait products and canid pest ejectors containing 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of wild dogs and foxes.

The program is designed to minimise predator impacts on wildlife, especially threatened species, and to minimise impact of wild dogs on neighbouring stock.

Signs will be placed at the entry to the baiting location. Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW National Parks managed lands. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Waratah Native Gardens picnic area is closed until further notice. This includes Gorge walking track. No access to the area is permitted.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is conducting an ongoing ground baiting program in this park from Thursday 1 September 2022 to Tuesday 28 February 2023.

The operation will involve the use of CPE's containing 1080 poison (sodium fluoroacetate) for the control of wild dogs and foxes. Some red meat may also be used.

The program is designed to minimise the impact of foxes on wildlife, and to minimise the impact of wild dogs and foxes on neighbouring stock.

All baiting locations will be identified by signs.

Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW National Parks and Reserves. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter baiting locations. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will be conducting a baiting program using manufactured baits, fresh meat baits and/or Canid Pest Ejectors containing 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of foxes. The program will be continuous and ongoing between the 1st of April 2022 and the 30th September 2022 in Wollemi National Park.  The program is to protect the endangered Brush Tail Rock Wallaby.

The following trails will be used as a part of this program:

  • Canobla Gap Fire Trail
  • Capertee River North Trail
