Closed areas: Blue Mountains National Park - closed areas

The following areas of Blue Mountains National Park are closed due to bushfire, track works and/or flood damage:

Katoomba, Leura and Wentworth Falls

  • National Pass from Valley of Waters to Slacks Stairs, due to ongoing rockfall risk.
  • Golden Stairs, due to rockfall (track repair works in progress).
  • Part of Amphitheatre track from the base of Bridal Veil falls to Fern Bower, due to ongoing rockfall risk.
  • Prince Henry Cliff walk between Leura Cascades round walk and Leura Cascades picnic area, and between Gordon Falls lookout and Olympian lookout, due to landslides. Detours in place. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information.
  • Part of Charles Darwin walk north of Weeping Rock circuit. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information.
  • Ingar campground can only be accessed via Andersons or Bedford Creek trails on foot, not via Ingar Road. 

Blackheath, Medlow Bath, Mount Victoria and Bells Line

  • Govetts Leap descent and Rodriguez Pass walking track, due to fire damage.
  • Perrys lookdown and Acacia Flat campgrounds, due to dangerous trees.
  • Walls Cave, Popes Glen and Pulpit Rock, due to fire and flood damage.
  • Point Pilcher Road, due to roadworks.
  • Wollangambe One Canyon, due to a dangerous whirlpool.

Rock climbing areas

  • Pulpit Rock and all areas that require access along closed walking tracks.

If you arrive at your local national park or other public space and it is too crowded to practice social distancing, it's your responsibility to leave the area.

Closed areas: Faulconbridge Ridge closed due to track maintenance

Faulconbridge Ridge will be closed from Wednesday 6 January to Sunday 7 February 2021. Fire trail maintenance works involving the use of heavy earth-moving equipment will be happening at that time.

This closure may be extended, depending on weather conditions.

Safety alerts: Grand Canyon walking track - one way

Grand Canyon walking track has been made one way until Saturday 30 January 2021. Please enter the loop track at Evans lookout and exit at Neates Glen. This change is due to record visitation levels and to help maintain social distancing. Please follow the directions of all signage in place on the track.

Closed areas: Wollangambe One Canyon

Wollangambe One Canyon is closed until further notice. Recent heavy rains have caused water levels to rise and conditions in the canyon to change. A dangerous whirlpool has formed mid-way through the canyon.

Closed areas: Fire trail closures in Kanangra Boyd National Park

The following fire trails north of Black Range in Kanangra Boyd National Park are temporarily closed to vehicle traffic due to recent heavy rain:

  • Mini Mini trail
  • Beefsteak trail
  • Waterfall trail
  • K range trail

The trails will be reopened when trail surface conditions permit.

Closed areas: Campgrounds closed

NPWS is working to reopen all campgrounds and accommodations where possible. However, some locations need to remain closed to ensure compliance with the current rules on public gatherings, or for other reasons such as fire or flood damage.

From 1 June 2020, all reopened campgrounds and campsites will require a booking to be made before you visit.

The closed campgrounds are:

  • Parr State Conservation Area
    • Heartbreak Hill campground
  • Wollemi National Park
    • Colo Meroo campground
  • Yengo National Park
    • Blue Gums campground
    • Mountain Arm campground
  • Kanangra-Boyd National Park

Closed areas: Golden Stairs closed

Golden Stairs is closed due to a major landslide. Ruined Castle can be accessed via Furber Stairs or the Giant Stairway. 

Construction work has begun and will be ongoing until further notice. The work involves rock removal, scaling and site remediation. Site assessments have determined that further rock falls are possible. Please do not enter this area, as it could be life threatening.

Other planned events: 1080 wild dog and fox control program

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will be conducting a strategic ground and aerial baiting program for the control of wild dogs and foxes.

The operations will involve the use of meat, manufactured products and Canid Pest Ejectors (CPE’s) containing Poison 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate). The program will be continuous and ongoing from Thursday 31 December 2020 to Wednesday 30 June 2021 in the following parks, reserves and state conservation areas:

  • Abercrombie National Park and State Conservation Area
  • Gardens of Stone National Park
  • Wollemi National Park
  • Blue Mountains National Park
  • Turon National Park
  • Marrangaroo National Park
  • Mares Forest National Park
  • Kanangra-Boyd National Park
  • Jenolan Karst Conservation Reserve

These programs have been designed to meet NPWS priority conservation and state focused biosecurity issues. All baiting locations will be signposted.

Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW national parks and reserves. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Other planned events: Limited cave tours opening

Jenolan Caves are opening the Orient and Temple of Baal Cave tours from Monday 2 November 2020. In order to comply with COVID-19 restrictions, only a very limited number of guests can be guided through the caves at one time. For this reason, cave tours will only be available with an accommodation or Chisolm’s dining booking.

Waratah Native Gardens picnic area is closed for maintenance. This includes the Gorge walking track. No access to the area is permitted. Penalties apply for non-compliance.
