Carcasses are generally left in the landscape during most widescale feral animal control operations. They do not pose a risk to the environment.

Carcasses do not pose a health or safety risk to visitors if left undisturbed.

Please be cautious and move onto another campground if safety issues occur. There have been many changes to campgrounds along the river, including reduced campground capacity. Some sites also have extensive regrowth following fires.

Closed areas: Araluen Road closure affecting access to Deua River campgrounds

Remediation roadworks have completed on sections of Araluen Road previously closed to traffic in the Eurobodalla Shire. However, Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council have identified sections of Araluen Road that require urgent slope stabilisation works and will be implementing temporary daytime closures on the western section of Araluen Road with targeted completion date being in October 2023. This may impact access to the following campgrounds along Deua River in Deua National Park from the western approach (via Braidwood/Majors Creek/Araluen):

  • Bakers Flat Campground
  • Deua River Campground
  • Dry Creek Campground

For more information and updates regarding closures on Araluen Road, please visit the QPRC website Araluen Road flood damage repairs - Queanbeyan-Palerang (nsw.gov.au) or call on 1300 735 025.

Safety alerts: Trailer access prohibited on some fire trails

Within Deua National Park some trails are not suitable for trailer access. National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has had advisory signs in place for some time to encourage people towing 4WD trailers to avoid some of the steeper, harder-to-maintain trails in the park. However, inappropriate use of signposted trails by 4WDs towing trailers is continuing, and is causing ongoing damage. Therefore, NPWS is now prohibiting the use of trailers on the following trails in Deua National Park:

  • Dampier Mountain trail
  • Oulla Creek trail
  • Minuma Range trail
  • Merricumbene trail
  • Mongamula trail
  • Dry Creek trail

It is now an offence to tow trailers on these trails. The penalty for towing trailers on these trails is a $300 penalty infringement notice, or higher if the matter is taken to court.

By keeping trailers away from these identified trails, you benefit everyone by reducing:

  • the safety risk to yourself and others
  • damage to the park environment and your assets
  • park maintenance costs.

Trailer access to Bendethera is still available from Moruya via Little Sugarloaf Road and Bendethera trail. From Braidwood, this increases travel time by about 30 minutes to 1 hour.

For more information, please contact NPWS Narooma on 02 4476 0800.

Access to The Big Hole walking track requires a river crossing of the Shoalhaven River.

During periods of rain, water levels of the river crossing may become too deep and fast flowing to pass, and extreme caution is advised. Visitors should not attempt crossing the river during major weather events or during prolonged periods of rain, when river levels can rise rapidly.

NPWS advises walkers to plan ahead and check the river levels in real time at NSW Office of Water - Real Time Water Data (waternsw.com.au) before setting out.
