Safety alerts: Bingi Dreaming track - Closed and open coastal lakes and lagoons

Bingi Dreaming track crosses openings to several Intermittently Closed and Open Coastal Lakes and Lagoons (ICOLLS). Openings of these lakes and lagoons are often unpredictable and can be quite dramatic. Please be aware that although lakes are usually only open for short periods (weeks), they can be impassable when open.

The Coila Lake opening is at the southern end of Bingi Dreaming track. Please check if this lake is open before you set out. If the opening is impassable, you won't be able to access the village of Tuross to complete the walk.

Safety alerts: Trailer access prohibited on some fire trails

Within Deua National Park some trails are not suitable for trailer access. National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has had advisory signs in place to encourage people towing 4WD trailers to avoid some of the steeper, harder-to-maintain trails in the park. Inappropriate use of signposted trails by 4WDs towing trailers is continuing, and is causing ongoing damage. Therefore, NPWS has prohibited the use of trailers on the following trails in Deua National Park:

  • Dampier Mountain trail
  • Oulla Creek trail
  • Minuma Range trail
  • Merricumbene trail
  • Mongamula trail
  • Dry Creek trail

It is now an offence to tow trailers on these trails. The penalty for towing trailers on these trails is a $300 penalty infringement notice, or higher if the matter is taken to court.

By keeping trailers away from these identified trails, you benefit everyone by reducing:

  • the safety risk to yourself and others
  • damage to the park environment and your assets
  • park maintenance costs.

Trailer access to Bendethera is still available from Moruya via Little Sugarloaf Road and Bendethera trail. From Braidwood, this increases travel time by about 30 minutes to 1 hour.

For more information, please contact NPWS Narooma on 02 4476 0800.

Closed areas: Current Road closures - Deua National Park

Following the recent east coast low weather system which brought heavy rain, flooding and strong winds to the south coast, a number of roads in Deua National Park have been closed due to damage and tree fall.  Staff are yet to complete full assessments across the Park which may result in further closures, however currently there are closures on the following roads -

Milikins Road - significant washed out area beyond the Donald's Creek crossing

Sugarloaf Road - A large tree has fallen in the section of road between Col's Link and Western Boundary roads.  The tree has impacted adjacent trees which are now hanging across the road and at risk of falling.  A physical road barrier is in place closing the road until the trees can be addressed and the area is deemed safe to traverse.

These roads will be reopened once remediation works have been completed and they are safe for use.  Please do not attempt to enter these closed areas, and follow directive of closure signage where in place. Penalties apply for non-compliance. For more information, contact the local park office.

Other planned events: Notice of 1080 ongoing baiting program

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is conducting an ongoing ground baiting program from Saturday 1 July 2023 to Sunday 30 June 2024. The operation will use 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of foxes.

  • Bournda Nature Reserve
  • Eurobodalla National Park
  • Mimosa Rocks National Park
  • South East Forest National Park (Yowaka Section and North of Snowy Mountain Hwy)

The program is designed to minimise predator impacts on wildlife, especially threatened species.

Signs will be placed at the entry to the baiting locations. Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW National Parks managed lands.

Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Penalties apply for non-compliance. For further information call the NPWS Merimbula area office on 02 6495 5000.

Closed areas: Araluen Road closure affecting access to Deua River campgrounds

Remediation roadworks have completed on sections of Araluen Road previously closed to traffic in the Eurobodalla Shire. However, Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council have identified sections of Araluen Road that require urgent slope stabilisation works and will be implementing temporary daytime closures on the western section of Araluen Road with targeted completion date being in October 2023. This may impact access to the following campgrounds along Deua River in Deua National Park from the western approach (via Braidwood/Majors Creek/Araluen):

  • Bakers Flat Campground
  • Deua River Campground
  • Dry Creek Campground

For more information and updates regarding closures on Araluen Road, please visit the QPRC website Araluen Road flood damage repairs - Queanbeyan-Palerang (nsw.gov.au) or call on 1300 735 025.

Safety alerts: River crossing to access Big Hole walking track - extreme caution advised

Access to The Big Hole walking track requires a river crossing of the Shoalhaven River.

During periods of rain, water levels of the river crossing may become too deep and fast flowing to pass, and extreme caution is advised. Visitors should not attempt crossing the river during major weather events or during prolonged periods of rain, when river levels can rise rapidly.

NPWS advises walkers to plan ahead and check the river levels in real time at NSW Office of Water - Real Time Water Data (waternsw.com.au) before setting out.
