Closed areas: Deua River - Campgrounds closed

Major landslips on the Araluen Road have made the following campgrounds inaccessible from both Braidwood and Moruya:

  • Deua River campground
  • Bakers Flat campground
  • Dry Creek campground

These campgrounds will remain closed until the Eurobodalla Shire Council have cleared and repaired roads to safely allow access through these areas. For Further information and updates on the condition of Araluen Road, email Eurobodalla Shire Council on give them a call on 02 4474 1000.

Closed areas: Closed areas for aerial pest control operation

The boundary areas of the northern precinct of Tallaganda National Park and State Conservation Area are closed from 6am, Friday 18 June to 6pm, Monday 28 June 2021 for an aerial pest control operation.

This program is in conjunction with adjoining property owners and aims to reduce the significant impact deer and pigs have on native plants and animals. No campground areas or firetrail access will be impacted by the program.

The Butmaroo Firetrail in the northern precinct of Tallaganda National Park and State Conservation Area is closed due to unsafe trail conditions. The trail will remain closed until repair work can be undertaken on the Mulloon Creek crossing and trail surface.

Safety alerts: Dangerous creek and river crossings following heavy rains

Due to recent heavy rainfall in the last 48 hours, NPWS advises all park users to avoid entering creek or river crossings to access areas of the park. Creek and river levels are currently at flood level and will likely take several days to drop.

NPWS also advises all park users to avoid using 4WD trails in Deua National Park this weekend after this recent rainfall event, as trails may become impassable and traffic may cause significant trail damage.

The program will be ongoing and continuous from Monday 19 April to Tuesday 19 October 2021.

The baited parks, reserves and state conservation areas include:

Safety alerts: Bingie Dreaming track - closed and open coastal lakes and lagoons

Bingie Dreaming track crosses openings to several Intermittently Closed and Open Coastal Lakes and Lagoons (ICOLLS). Openings of these lakes and lagoons are often unpredictable and can be quite dramatic. Please be aware that although lakes are usually only open for short periods (weeks), they can be impassable when open.

The Coila Lake opening is at the southern end of Bingie Dreaming track. Please check if this lake is open before you set out. If the opening is impassable, you won't be able to access the village of Tuross to complete the walk.

Closed areas: Closed areas due to bushfire recovery works

The following areas in Deua National Park are closed:

  • Bendethera Caves walking track and cave access is closed due to significant fire damage. All track markers were destroyed by fire and are yet to be replaced. It is dangerous to walk off designated tracks in Karst areas. Please do not enter this area.
  • Mongamula East fire trail
  • Oulla Creek fire trail
  • Hanging Mountain lookout

These areas are closed due to substantial bushfire recovery works. Please keep out of the closure signs and any cordoned off areas.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will be conducting a baiting program using meat baits and canid pest ejectors containing 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of wild dogs and foxes. The program will be continuous and ongoing in the following parks:

  • Tallaganda National Park
  • Tallaganda State Conservation Area
  • Gourock National Park

All baiting locations will be identifiable by signs.

Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW national parks and reserves. Pets and working dogs may be affected, and 1080 is lethal to cats and dogs. Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

This program is part of an integrated pest control strategy, which also includes trapping and shooting, with the aim of minimising the impacts of these animals on neighbouring stock and native animal populations following the 2019/2020 bushfire season.

Safety alerts: Some fire trails not suitable for trailer access

Within Deua National Park some trails are not suitable for trailer access. National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has had advisory signs in place for some time to encourage people towing 4WD trailers to avoid some of the steeper, harder-to-maintain trails in Deua National Park. However, due to ongoing damage to trails as a result of continued inappropriate use of 4WDs towing trailers on these signposted trails, NPWS is now prohibiting the use of trailers on the following trails in Deua National Park:

  • Dampier Mountain trail
  • Oulla Creek trail
  • Minuma Range trail
  • Merricumbene trail
  • Mongamula trail
  • Dry Creek trail

It is now an offence to tow trailers on these trails. The penalty for towing trailers on these trails is a $300 penalty infringement notice, or higher if the matter is taken to court. By keeping trailers away from these identified trails, you reduce the safety risk to yourself and others, reduce damage to the park environment and your assets and reduce park maintenance costs, a benefit to everyone. Trailer access to Bendethera is still available from Moruya via Little Sugarloaf Road and Bendethera trail.
