Closed areas: Brindabella trail and campground closures

Some parts of Brindabella National Park are closed due to wet weather conditions which has made some trails and crossings impassable. This closure will remain in place from Friday 7 August to Tuesday 11 August 2020, but may be extended at short notice. The closed areas are:

  • McIntyres campground
  • Lowells Flat campground
  • Flea Creek campground
  • Flea Creek day use area
  • Gentle Annie trail
  • Waterfall trail 
  • McIntyres trail
  • Dingi Dingi trail

Other trails in Brindabella National Park remain open, but please take care on the roads and drive to the conditions. 

Penalties apply for non-compliance. For more information call the local NPWS Queanbeyan office on 02 6229 7166 during business hours.

Other planned events: 1080 aerial pest control program

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is conducting 2 aerial baiting programs using meat baits containing 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of wild dogs. The programs will start on or shortly after Wednesday 27 May 2020, and will finish on Monday 31 August 2020. The baiting will take place in the following parks, reserves and state conservation areas:

  • Bugong National Park
  • Budawang National Park
  • Tarlo River National Park
  • Morton National Park and State Conservation Area
  • Bees Nest Nature Reserve
  • Bungonia National Park and State Conservation Area
  • Barrengarry Nature Reserve
  • Nadgigomar Nature Reserve
  • Monga National Park and State Conservation Area
  • Deua National Park
  • Badja Swamps Nature Reserve
  • Wadbilliga National Park
  • Kooraban National Park
  • South East Forests National Park
  • Coolumbooka Nature Reserve

There will be signs at all baiting locations.

Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW national parks and reserves. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs in the vicinity must be restrained or muzzled and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning, seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Closed areas: Areas closed - bushfire damage and ground and aerial pest control operations

Deua National Park is closed due to significant bushfire damage. However Berlang campground and Big Hole walking track are open for public use. NSW National Parks is also conducting ground and aerial pest control programs as part of the bushfire recovery. Penalties apply for non-compliance. NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is conducting a baiting program using fresh meat, manufactured baits and CPEs containing 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of wild dogs. The program will be ongoing and continuous from Monday 4 May to Wednesday 4 November 2020. The baited reserves include:

  • Araluen Nature Reserve
  • Badja Swamps Nature Reserve
  • Berlang State Conservation Area 
  • Bondi Gulf Nature Reserve
  • Coolumbooka Nature Reserve
  • Deau National Park
  • Egan Peaks Nature Reserve
  • Kooraban National Park
  • Majors Creek State Conservation Area
  • Monga National Park and State Conservation Area

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will be conducting a baiting program using meat baits and canid pest ejectors containing 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of wild dogs and foxes. The program will be continuous and ongoing in Tallaganda National Park, Tallaganda State Conservation Area and Gourock National Park.

All baiting locations will be identifiable by signs.

Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW national parks and reserves. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

This program is part of an integrated pest control strategy, which also includes trapping and shooting, with the aim of minimising the impacts of these animals on neighbouring stock.

Closed areas: Northern section of park - bushfire affected

The northern section of this park is closed as trees and surrounding areas have been affected by fire. This section is north of the Lowden Road and includes Mulloon Creek campground. Do not enter the closed area. Penalties apply for non-compliance. For more information, contact the local NPWS office.

Safety alerts: Some fire trails not suitable for trailer access

Within Deua National Park some trails are not suitable for trailer access. National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has had advisory signs in place for some time to encourage people towing 4WD trailers to avoid some of the steeper, harder-to-maintain trails in Deua National Park. However, due to ongoing damage to trails as a result of continued inappropriate use of 4WDs towing trailers on these signposted trails, NPWS is now prohibiting the use of trailers on the following trails in Deua National Park:

  • Dampier Mountain trail
  • Oulla Creek trail
  • Minuma Range trail
  • Merricumbene trail
  • Mongamula trail
  • Dry Creek trail

It is now an offence to tow trailers on these trails. The penalty for towing trailers on these trails is a $300 penalty infringement notice, or higher if the matter is taken to court. By keeping trailers away from these identified trails, you reduce the safety risk to yourself and others, reduce damage to the park environment and your assets and reduce park maintenance costs, a benefit to everyone. Trailer access to Bendethera is still available from Moruya via Little Sugarloaf Road and Bendethera trail.
