Fire bans: Park fire ban - Southern Ranges

A park fire ban is in place in this park and remains in effect unless otherwise extended or removed. During park fire ban periods, all campfire and solid fuel (wood, heat beads, charcoal, briquettes, hexamine) barbecues and stoves are prohibited. Gas and electric barbecues and cookers are permitted as long as:

  • They're under direct control of an adult
  • The ground within 2m of the barbecue is cleared of all flammable materials
  • There's an adequate supply of water (minimum of a bucket)

If a Total Fire Ban is in place, different rules apply. Contact the local park office before bringing a gas or electric barbecue or cooker.

Closed areas: Kosciuszko National Park - part closure

Sections of Kosciuszko National Park have been reopened, but areas which have been burnt or have ongoing fire suppression operations remain closed.

The following areas of Kosciuszko National Park are now open:

  • All backcountry areas south of Mount Jagungal which have not been impacted by fire are open to the public
  • Kosciuszko Road - Jindabyne to Charlotte Pass
  • Guthega Road - Kosciuszko Road to Guthega Village
  • Charlotte Pass, Perisher Valley, Smiggin Holes, Guthega, Diggers Creek, Wilsons Valley, Sawpit Creek and Waste Point. Visitors need to check whether resort facilities and hospitality venues are open for business
  • Alpine Way (visitors should visit Live Traffic NSW to confirm status before travel)
  • Thredbo Village and Thredbo resort lease area
  • Thredbo Valley track – Bullocks Flat to Gaden Trout Hatchery 
  • Ngarigo, Thredbo Diggings and Island Bend campgrounds - for day use and overnight camping
  • Snowy Mountains Highway. Visitors must stay within the road corridor and be aware of hazards such as damaged buildings and burnt trees
  • Blowering campgrounds - Log Bridge, The Pines, Humes Crossing and Yachting Point
  • All walks on the Main Range, including to Mount Kosciuszko and surrounding the alpine resort areas
  • Barry Way – open to the Victorian border. Lower Snowy picnic and campgrounds are open and include Jacobs River, Halfway Flat, No Name, Pinch River, Jacks Lookout and Running Waters
  • Schlink Pass trail and associated huts (Horse Camp Hut, White River Hut, Schlink Hut, Valentine Hut)
  • Mount Jagungal. Access to this area must be from Guthega Power Station or Guthega. There is no access from Round Mountain, Tooma Dam or Snowy Plain. O’Keefes and Dershkos huts are accessible but areas further north remain closed
  • Rainbow Lake walk – Kosciuszko Road to Rainbow Lake
  • Rennix walk – Kosciuszko Road return
  • Waterfall walk – from Sawpit Creek
  • Pallaibo walk – from Thredbo River picnic area and Sawpit Creek

The following areas of Kosciuszko National Park remain closed:

  • All areas which have been burnt by the recent fires remain closed due to the risk of dangerous trees falling, and ongoing fire fighting operations.
  • All campgrounds between Thredbo and Khancoban
  • All areas north of Snowy Mountains Highway:
    • Yarrangobilly Caves. Accommodation is available to be booked for check-in from Wednesday 1 July 2020. The anticipated opening for day visitation is the 2020 NSW Easter School Holidays.
    • Long Plain Road
    • Long Plain Hut campground and Blue Waterholes campground
    • Yolde campground and Jounama Creek campground
  • The following public roads (for latest updates visit Live Traffic NSW):
    • KNP5 (Khancoban to Cabramurra Road)
    • Link Road from Snowy Mountains Highway to Goat Ridge Road
    • Goats Ridge Road and Elliot Way
  • Cabramurra township. Snowy Hydro's operational town of Cabramurra suffered significant fire damage and for safety reasons is temporarily closed.

RFS and NPWS will continue to assess bushfire risk and progress opening further areas of Kosciuszko National Park when it is safe.

Beware of changing conditions

  • All roads, resorts and other areas may close suddenly in response to changing bushfire risk
  • You should monitor advice from NSW Rural Fire Service and other emergency services frequently, regardless of whether you are inside or outside of Kosciuszko National Park

Current fire situation

  • Large fires have impacted the northern part of Kosciuszko National Park around Kiandra, Tantangara, Adaminaby and Eucumbene Cove
  • There are still fires in Kosciuszko National Park around Mt Youngal (In the vicinity of Geehi) and Cooleman Plain in Northern Kosciuszko
  • Other fires exist to the west of Kosciuszko National Park in Victoria
  • Lightning and ember attacks may result in additional fires

Thredbo Valley track and Muzzlewood track are closed between Thredbo Resort and Bullocks Flat due to wet track conditions. These tracks will remain closed until conditions are assessed as suitable for reopening. Thredbo Valley track between Bullocks Flat and Gaden Trout Hatchery remains open for use.

Other planned events: Track diversions - Bullocks Flat precinct

Track diversions will be in place in and around the Bullocks Hut precinct and Skitube area while major track upgrade works are undertaken.

Tracks will remain open with diversions in place around construction zones to maintain access to Skitube, Lake Crackenback and Gaden Trout Hatchery. The affected tracks are:

  • Thredbo Valley track between Thredbo Diggings campground and Bullocks Flat
  • Bullocks walking track
  • Muzzlewood track

Be cautious when walking and riding in and around these areas due to construction activity. The works are expected to continue until May 2020. Maintain care as there will be construction and other maintenance vehicles in the area.

This construction project plans to upgrade the existing track from Skitube carpark D to the Bullocks Hut precinct to a low mobility path, and upgrade the existing toilet to a disabled-compliant facility.

Helicopter lifting operations are planned from around 10am onwards on Thursday 6 February between Guthega carpark and Illawong. There are no closures, however vehicles accessing Guthega may be delayed for 5-10 minutes as helicopters land and take off.

Illawong Walk remains open, however walkers may be asked to wait for 5-10 minutes if the helicopter is unloading at the Illawong end.

Brindabella National Park and Bimberi Nature Reserve are closed from 15 January 2020 until 29 February 2020 due to increased fire danger. The closed areas include:

  • Flea Creek campground
  • McIntyres Hut campground
  • Lowells Flat campground
  • Coree Camp campground
  • Pryors Hut
  • Mt Aggie walking track

Do not enter closed areas in Brindabella National Park or Bimberi Nature Reserve.

Current situation:

  • Large fires have impacted the northern part of Kosciuszko National Park, adjacent to the Brindabella Range, in recent days. 
  • There are still uncontained fires in the region around Cooleman and the Bimberi Wilderness
  • Lightning and ember attacks may result in additional fires
  • It's unlikely that these fires will be contained in the coming days

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service is doing 1080 ground baiting of wild dogs and foxes in Kosciuszko National Park, Jingellic Nature Reserve, Bogandyera Nature Reserve and Clarkes Hill Nature Reserve.

This baiting program will run from Tuesday 12 November 2019 to Tuesday 12 May 2020. It will reduce the impacts of wild dogs and foxes on wildlife and threatened species in the park and neighbouring stock.

There will be 1080 baiting signs at the entrance to baiting areas. Don’t touch baits or ejector devices. Some baits may be buried. Penalties apply for non-compliance.

Domestic pets, including dogs, are not permitted in national parks or reserves. 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) baits are lethal to domestic dogs and cats. In the event of accidental poisoning, seek immediate veterinary assistance.

NSW National Parks is doing a 1080 wild dog pest control program using baits and canid pest ejectors between Monday 23 September 2019 and Sunday 22 March 2020.

This program is happening in Kosciuszko National Park in the Yaouk/Adaminaby area, from Lone Pine trail to Lake Eucumbene. It is also being done in Scabby Range and Yaouk nature reserves.

There will be signs up around all the baiting areas. Pets and working dogs could be affected by 1080 poison, and must not enter the baited areas. For further information call the NPWS Tumut area office on 02 6947 7000.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) conducts ongoing and seasonal 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) baiting programs in areas of Kosciuszko National Park. These programs are part of an integrated pest management strategy aimed at controlling wild dogs, foxes, feral pigs and rabbits. All baiting locations are identifiable to the public through signage erected around the baited area.

Domestic pets are highly susceptible to 1080 poison. Park visitors are reminded that dogs, cats and other pets and domestic animals (other than certified assistance animals) are not permitted in Kosciuszko National Park.

Safety alerts: Some fire trails not suitable for trailer access

Within Deua National Park some trails are not suitable for trailer access. National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has had advisory signs in place for some time to encourage people towing 4WD trailers to avoid some of the steeper, harder-to-maintain trails in Deua National Park. However, due to ongoing damage to trails as a result of continued inappropriate use of 4WDs towing trailers on these signposted trails, NPWS is now prohibiting the use of trailers on the following trails in Deua National Park:

  • Dampier Mountain trail
  • Oulla Creek trail
  • Minuma Range trail
  • Merricumbene trail
  • Mongamula trail
  • Dry Creek trail

It is now an offence to tow trailers on these trails. The penalty for towing trailers on these trails is a $300 penalty infringement notice, or higher if the matter is taken to court. By keeping trailers away from these identified trails, you reduce the safety risk to yourself and others, reduce damage to the park environment and your assets and reduce park maintenance costs, a benefit to everyone. Trailer access to Bendethera is still available from Moruya via Little Sugarloaf Road and Bendethera trail.
