Closed areas: Parts of Blue Mountains National Park closed

Many roads, fire trails and walking tracks within Blue Mountains National Park are closed due to infrastructure upgrades or damage caused by wet weather including subsidence, rockfalls, landslides and fallen trees.

The following areas are closed:

Katoomba and Leura

  • Giant Stairway is closed between Lady Game lookout and Dardanelles Pass until the end of September 2024.  Access out of the valley is via Furber Steps or Amphitheatre track.
  • Honeymoon Bridge is closed due to rockfall risk.
  • Prince Henry Cliff walk (part of Grand Cliff Top walk) is closed between Gordon Falls picnic area and Elysian Rock lookout, due to a landslide. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information. Additionally, this route will be closed from Gordon Falls to Leura Cascades Picnic Area on 25th September for a helicopter operation. Detours via Olympian Parade will be in place. Parts of Cliff Drive near Leura Cascades will also be closed. See Blue Mountains City Council website for information.
  • Fern Bower track between Prince Henry Cliff walk (Grand Cliff Top walk) and the Amphitheatre track is closed due to multiple landslides. Access to Leura Forest and Jamison Valley is via Amphitheatre Track.
  • Ruined Castle, Golden Stairs, Solitary loop and Federal Pass, west of Scenic World are closed due to multiple landslides.
  • Lone Lyrebird track is closed between Gordon Road and the War Memorial, due to subsidence. Detour is in place.
  • Part of Lindeman Pass is closed due to a major landslide below Gladstone lookout. Roberts Pass is closed due to rockfall and landslide hazards.
  • Six Foot track is affected by closures at Jenolan Caves.

Wentworth Falls and Woodford   

  • Valley of the Waters track is closed below Nature track junction due to trackwork. There is no access to Empress Canyon, Empress Falls, Sylvia Falls, Roberts Pass, Vera Falls, Hippocrene Falls or Wentworth Falls from Valley of the Waters.
  • Charles Darwin walk (part of Grand Cliff Top walk) is closed between Fletcher Street and Weeping Rock. Detours are in place to provide directions to Wentworth Falls picnic area. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information.
  • Part of National Pass (west of Wentworth Falls middle crossing) is closed due to a major landslide and ongoing risks.
  • Wentworth Pass and Slack Stairs are closed due to multiple landslides.
  • Bedford Creek and Andersons fire trail will be closed Monday to Friday until Friday 27 September 2024 to allow for roadworks. There is no access to vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists from Anderson fire trail or Murphys Road to Ingar campground. There is also no exit to Woodford from Andersons fire trail. Trails and campgrounds will be open on Saturday and Sunday. Ingar campground is open on Saturday night only.

Blackheath, Mount Victoria and Bells Line of Road

  • Mount Banks Road will be closed to vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists until Monday 30th of September for fire trail maintenance. No access to Mount Banks Summit walk will be permitted during this period. The pincic area and walking track will be open during weekends. 
  • Williams track (Govetts descent) and Rodriguez Pass are closed due to rockfalls and landslides. Grose Valley can be accessed from Evans Lookout via the Horse Track. 
  • Pulpit Rock Reserve, lookouts and walking track are closed. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information. Pulpit Rock walking track from Popes Glen is open as far as the NPWS boundary (as shown on Google maps).

Adventure recreation, canyons, abseiling and rock climbing

Some adventure recreation areas and routes are specifically closed where the access or exit road/track is mentioned above.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is conducting an ongoing ground baiting program from Monday 23rd September 2024 to Sunday 23rd March 2025. The operation will use a Felixer containing 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of feral cats, and approved meat baits, meat bait products, and Canid Pest Ejectors (CPE) for the control of foxes and wild dogs.

The program will be conducted in Nattai National Park.

The program is designed to minimise predator impacts on wildlife, especially threatened species.

Signs will be placed at the entry to the baiting location. Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW National Parks managed lands. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Safety alerts: Nigh time fox control operations

Please be aware night shooting of foxes may occur in the following beaches to protect nesting shorebirds:

  • Seven Mile Beach (Seven Mile Beach National Park)
  • Comerong Island (Comerong Island Nature Reserve)

Fox control is undertaken by qualified shooters in accordance to shot plans between 2 September until 28 September 2024 to protect endangered nesting shorebirds.

Access tracks and beach entrances will be closed and signposted prior to shooting operations. Please look out for signage stating the beach is closed if accessing these beaches after dark.

Fletcher Street and Flat Rock vehicle trail in Helensburgh will be closed on weekdays from Monday 2 September 2024 to Wednesday 2 October 2024 to allow trail surface repair works to take place. The trails will be open on weekends.

Barren Grounds Nature Reserve is closed from 4pm Monday 9th September to 4pm Friday 27th September, then 4pm Sunday 14th October to Friday 25th October 2024, due to ground pest control operations.

This closure is for weekdays only during this period. The Nature Reserve will remain open for the school holiday period between Saturday 28th September to 4pm Sunday 14th October 2024.

Closed areas: Road closures at Thirlmere Lakes National Parks for storm damage repair

Between Wednesday the 31st of July and Friday 20th September 2024, road works will occur in Thirlmere Lakes National Park to repair damage caused by recent storms.

 

Sections of road will be closed to the public throughout this period and access to some areas of the park may be limited. We ask visitors to abide by road signage and warnings and to be cautious of trucks and machinery that will be operating in the area.

 

Initially, W E Middleton Memorial Drive will be closed from Couridjah Picnic Area to the locked gate. Access to the Couridjah Corridor walk in Nattai National Park will not be possible during this time.

 

From the week starting 26th of August 2024, Pumphouse Rd will be closed to vehicles. Visitors are asked to access the park using the Slades Rd entrance.

Safety alerts: Lower Pipeline fire trail

Lower Pipeline fire trail has suffered some damage from the April 2024 flood event, resulting in a minor landslide, taking out part of the fire trail itself.

Authorised Vehicles should avoid the area.

 A landslip has occurred on an auxillary trail (near Dingo tunnel) off this trail. Pedestrians and Cyclists are not permitted to pass the landslip.

Fire trails and walking tracks in the Temptation Creek Precinct will be closed on weekdays from Monday 8 July to Friday 20 September 2024 for fire trail maintenance works. The closed areas are:

  • Florence Parade vehicle trail, between Farnell Avenue and Grays Point Road.
  • Anana Hill vehicle trail, between Angle Road and Greenhaven Road.
  • Temptation Creek vehicle trail
  • Gardiners Garage vehicle trail
  • Northern section of Rawson Parade vehicle trail. The section between Loftus Oval and the NPWS Royal National Park area office carpark will remain open.
  • Grays Point School walking track
  • Savilles Creek walking track.

Closed areas: Camping areas closed due to flood and fire damage

Camping is closed indefinitely at the following campgrounds due to fire damage and flooding. The closed campground include (open for day-use only): 

  • Pauls Point
  • Sundeck 
  • Sawyers 
  • Burrawang

Please note that the campgrounds will remain open for day use. Some campgrounds may be affected by flood debris following heavy rain, and there may be steep sand walls to access sites.

Please be cautious and move onto another campground if safety issues occur. There have been many changes to campgrounds along the river, including reduced campground capacity. Some sites also have extensive regrowth following fires.

Closed areas: The Coast track partial closure

Walking the full length of The Coast track from Otford to Bundeena or Bundeena to Otford is not currently possible due to several track closures along its length. These closures are necessary due to erosion, rockfall risk and ongoing track upgrade works.

Please note the following closures:

  • Palm Jungle Loop track between Burning Palms, Werrong lookout is closed for track upgrades and storm impact remediation until December 2024.
  • The Garie to Little Garie section of The Coast track is closed due to hazardous rockfalls and erosion.
  • North Era campground is closed until further notice.
  • Garie Road, Garie Beach and the Garie precinct is closed until further notice due to damage and subsidence of the road surface. Walkers approaching from the north (e.g. from Wattamolla or Bundeena) should exit the track via Curra Moors track.

Bushwalker access is available for the following sections of The Coast track:

  • South bound access - Bundeena to Curra Moors track via Wattamolla and return only. No access to Garie Beach.
  • North bound access - is via Garawarra Farm Ridge trail and Burgh Ridge track to North Era and return, during track upgrades.
  • Figure 8 Pools access - Access via Garawarra Farm only to Garawarra Ridge trail and Burgh Ridge track.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service is disposing of used 1080 baits and baiting products in an approved disposal pit on NPWS National Parks land within the Fitzroy Falls area.

The burial of used baits and products will happen from Friday 14 June 2024 to Friday 13 December 2024. All bait material in the pit will be buried under at least 500mm of soil, and clear of waterways so as not to cause pollution of waterways. This is in accordance with the current Pesticide Control Order (1080 bait products).

There will be 1080 baiting signs at the entrance to the disposal pit site.

1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) is lethal to pets (including domestic dogs and cats) and working dogs. In the event of accidental poisoning, seek immediate veterinary assistance. Domestic pets, including dogs and cats, are not permitted in national parks or reserves.

Closed areas: Areas closed for deer control program

Some areas in Royal National Park are closed to the public between sunset and sunrise from Wednesday 30 May to Friday 29 December 2024 to enable a deer control operation to be carried out.

The affected areas include:

  • All picnic areas in the Audley precinct
  • Asset protection zones adjacent to Maianbar, Bundeena and East Heathcote.
  • Wattamolla and Garie picnic areas
  • North Era campground and coastal areas between Garie Beach and Figure 8 Pools
  • Garrawarra Farm
  • Lady Carrington Drive
  • Bonnie Vale campground and picnic area.

These closures will be signposted at entry points to the closed areas. If you have approved bookings to camp you can still access campsites during these times.

Ground shooting will not take place during school holidays or on weekends or public holidays.

Safety alerts: Pipeline fire trail flood damage

Pipeline fire trail has suffered some damage from the April 2024 flood event, resulting in deep rutting to the trail surface in some locations.

Pedestrians and Cyclists should use caution when tracking over these surfaces.

Care should be taken after heavy rain at all creek crossing and causeway points along this trail as water flows very fast and deep.

The Upper Nepean State Conservation Area is entirely within the Sydney Catchment Authority Special Area (Water Catchment).
