Closed areas: Eastern Suburbs beaches within National Park are closed

The following parts of Sydney Harbour National Park and Kamay Botany Bay National Park are closed until further notice to protect the health and safety of our visitors and staff:

  • Shark Beach, Nielsen Park
  • Milk Beach, Hermit Beach and Queens Beach, Hermitage Foreshore Precinct
  • Lady Bay Beach, South Head
  • Congwong Beach and Little Congwong Beach, La Perouse 
  • Visitor Centre and BBQs, Kurnell

Walking tracks in the park currently remain open. However, visitors are reminded that social distancing and gathering size limits apply.

Closed areas: Royal National Park Visitor Centre and other areas closed

The following parts of Royal National Park are also closed until further notice to protect the health and safety of our visitors and staff:

  • Wattamolla Beach precinct, including the carpark, lagoon and picnic area
  • Garie Beach precinct, with no lifeguard patrols present
  • Garawarra Farm carpark (Figure 8 Pools access)
  • Bonnie Vale picnic area and campground
  • All campgrounds
  • Royal National Park Visitor Centre

Other areas of the park currently remain open, including:

  • The Audley Cafe is offering a takeaway service and card payments are preferred.
  • walking tracks remain open however, visitors are reminded that social distancing and gathering size limits apply in Royal National Park.

Many high visitation areas and facilities within Lane Cove National Park are closed from Friday 27 March 2020 until further notice. These closed areas and facilities include: 

  • All large picnic shelters 
  • All barbecue facilities 
  • Jenkins Hill playground and Kukundi playground
  • Haynes Flat and Carter Creek toilets 

Lane Cove Holiday Park is unable to accommodate any camping, including caravans and motor-homes. Staying in cabins is still permitted. Lane Cove Holiday Park can be contacted on 02 9888 9133. 

If you are visiting the park, please be prepared to pay vehicle entry fees with an appropriate payment card.

Most tracks and trails are open including the Great North Walk between Boronia Park and Thornleigh, though visitors should take caution as some sections remain affected by recent storms.

Riverside walk will remain closed until further notice while staff work to fix extensive flood damage, erosion and unsafe conditions.

Safety alerts: Malabar Headland rifle range operation schedule

For public safety, the eastern section of Malabar Headland National Park is closed during ANZAC Rifle Range operations. These closures may occur with little or no notice. Do not enter the eastern section of the park (including Boora Point walking track) when:

  • Red flags are flying above the range
  • There are warning signs at the park's entry points (South Maroubra Beach and Fishermans Road carpark)
  • Park entry gates are closed.

When is the eastern section of the park closed?

  • Every Saturday

These closures apply to the eastern section of the park only (Boora Point walking track). The western section of the park (Western Escarpment walking track) remains open. The range operation schedule is provided by the NSW Rifle Association.

The toilets at the Commemoration Flat and Cricketers Pitch areas in Kamay Botany Bay National Park will be closed for repairs from Monday 3 February 2020 to Tuesday 31 March 2020.

Toilets will be available at the Visitors Centre, a short walk from the closed buildings. Picnic areas and the surrounds will remain accessible.

All roads and visitor precincts in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park have now reopened. Most tracks and trails are now open, though visitors should take caution as some sections remain affected by recent storms.

Berowra track remains closed between Apple Tree Bay and the intersection of Mount Ku-ring-gai track until further notice while staff fix extensive storm damage.

A fox baiting program will take place in Towra Point Nature Reserve from Monday 24 February to Monday 9 March 2020. Areas where baiting is underway will be signposted. The area is a nature reserve and closed to the public. Domestic pets are not permitted.

This includes Chowder Bay and Dobroyd, Bradleys, Georges, Middle and North headlands. North Head includes adjoining land of Sydney Harbour Federation Trust, Australian Institute of Police Management, and Quarantine Station.

The program is continuous and ongoing between 1 February 2020 and 31 July 2020. All baiting locations will be identifiable by signs. Don’t touch baits or ejector devices. Penalties apply for non-compliance.

Please be reminded that domestic pets are not permitted on NPWS estate. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Safety alerts: Swimming safety in Berowra Valley National Park

Swimming is not advisable in Berowra Creek at certain times as the water may be subject to variable pollution levels and algal blooms. Please refer to the Hornsby Shire Council website before swimming in Berowra Creek.

Swimming at Fishponds is not advised at any time due to heavy water pollution.

A 1080 fox baiting program is underway in Towra Point Nature Reserve, finishing on Tuesday 31 March 2020.

The program is part of the NPWS FoxTap program, and is designed to control foxes to assist in recovery of little terns and pied oystercatchers.

1080 poison can affect non-target species like domestic dogs and cats. Domestic pets, including dogs, are not permitted in national parks or reserves. In the event of accidental poisoning, seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Safety alerts: Lower steps on Shark Island Wharf closed

The lower 4 steps of Shark Island Wharf are closed due to a safety hazard. Using these steps for berthing, drop-off and pick-up is prohibited. Access is only possible using the upper stairs.

Small vessels and boats may not be able to berth, particularly at low tide.

Casuarina track between Carrol Creek and Davidson Picnic area, Forestville is closed indefinitely due to the removal of the stairway down to the picnic area after safety concerns. Lyrebird track is the recommended alternative access which connects to the Governor Philip Walk or Ferguson Street. Penalties apply for non-compliance. Collins Flat Beach is currently unavailable for venue hire. This is due to the impact of high visitation on the critical penguin habitat at this location. This closure will be reviewed at the end of the breeding season in February 2020.

Closed areas: Flat Rock track - partial closure

A section of Flat Rock track - from the Killarney Drive entrance to the Downpatrick Street entrance - is currently closed until further notice due to track safety issues where the track passes through private property near Killarney Point:

  • Walkers heading west should exit Flat Rock track at the eastern end of Killarney Drive and use Killarney Drive until you reach Downpatrick Street. Then walk down the street and re-enter Flat Rock track from the Downpatrick Street fire trail.
  • Walkers heading east should exit Flat Rock track at the Downpatrick Street fire trail and use Downpatrick Street, then Killarney Drive until you reach the end of Killarney Drive. Re-enter Flat Rock track from the Killarney Drive entrance.

From Monday 7 December 2015, some toilets within this park will be closed during the week, opening only on weekends and public holidays. Toilets affected are:

  • Blue Wren and Illoura (Areas 4-5)
  • Carters Creek (Area 9)
  • Scribbly Gums (Area 17)
  • Bakers Flat (Area 28)
  • Haynes Flat (Area 32)

Safety alerts: Audley precinct in wet weather

Access across the Audley Weir may be closed due to river flooding during times of wet weather. During wet weather, NPWS advise park visitors to visit Live Traffic NSW to ascertain the status of the Weir crossing before commencing their travel to the park. During times of closure, access to Bundeena, Maianbar residential areas, Royal National Park Visitor Centre, including the Audley Dance hall and cafe, is via McKell Ave Waterfall.

  • Sydney Harbour National Park is open sunrise to sunset but may have to close at times due to poor weather or fire danger.

  • Park entry fees:

    Bradleys Head carpark: $8 per vehicle per day. North Head carpark: $5 per vehicle per day. There are pay and display machines that accept cards and coins - no change given. Chowder Bay Road parking: Monday-Friday: $3 per hour, to a maximum of $16 per day. Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays: $4 per hour, to a maximum of $20 per day. If you hold an NPWS All Parks or Multi Parks Pass, you can park free for up to four hours per day - additional time can be purchased. Car parks operated by Sydney Harbour Federation Trust or Mosman Council are not covered by your pass. Please check signs carefully.

    Other fees:

    Landing fee or tour fee applies to visit Sydney Harbour islands. To visit Shark, Clark or Rodd islands all vessels, including kayaks, need to pay a $7 per person landing fee. To arrange, please contact 1300 072 757 (13000 PARKS). Annual NSW Parks Passes not valid for landing fees.
