Closed areas: Areas Closed for Pest Animal Program

Some areas in Royal National Park are closed to the public between sunset and sunrise to enable pest animal management programs to be carried out.

These closures will be signposted at the entry points to the closed areas.

The affected areas include:

  • Bonnie Vale Campground
  • Bonnie Vale Picnic Area
  • The Basin Track between Bonnie Vale and Maianabar
  • Bushland areas surrounding Cabbage Tree Basin

Closed areas: No pedestrian access through Bonnie Vale campground to Maianbar

There is no pedestrian access through Bonnie Vale campground to Maianbar on weekdays from Thursday 2 December to Friday 17 December 2021, inclusive and Saturday 11th December, 2021.

This closure is due to construction works, and may be extended due to weather. Any delays will be advised as soon as they are known. Bonnie Vale picnic area will remain open.

Wattamolla precinct and Wattamolla Road is closed for carpark maintenance during the following times:

  • Monday 13 December to Friday 17 December 2021
  • Monday 20 December to Tuesday 21 December 2021

The Coast track will remain open for walkers.

Closed areas: Areas closed around Loftus Oval

Areas around Loftus Oval will be closed for weed removal and chainsaw training operations from 7am Tuesday 7 December to 5pm Wednesday 8 December 2021.

The work involves felling of dead trees and herbicide use. Please follow safety signage and directions from staff.

Closed areas: Closed areas due to rifle range operations

The eastern section of Malabar Headland National Park will be closed during the following times due to rifle range operations:

  • Every Saturday - ANZAC Rifle Range Club
  • Every 1st Sunday of the month – Sporting Shooters’ Association of Australia
  • Tuesday 25 to Sunday 30 January 2022 (Queen's Competition)
  • Last shooting day for 2021 will be Saturday 18 December.
  • First shooting day for 2022 will be Saturday 8 January.

Do not enter the eastern section of the park (including Boora Point walking track) when:

  • Red flags are flying above the range
  • There are warning signs at the park's entry points (South Maroubra Beach and Fishermans Road carpark)
  • Park entry gates are closed

The western section of the park (Western Escarpment walking track) remains open.

Closed areas: Wattamolla lower loop carpark and picnic area

Wattamolla Lower Loop carpark and picnic area are closed for upgrades until 20 December 2021.

The following areas are open:

  • Access to the Royal Coast track through Wattamolla 
  • Access to the beach, amenities building, upper carpark areas and Providential Point

Large vehicles and buses over 8.8 metres cannot access Wattamolla. Buses should not enter Wattamolla Road from Sir Bertram Stevens Drive. There is no safe area to park or manoeuvre at Wattamolla or along Wattamolla Road.

All other vehicles can enter Wattamolla and park in carparks numbers 2 to 5 (parking is limited during peak periods).

Closed areas: Kurnell Visitor Centre closed for upgrades

Kurnell Visitor Centre is currently closed until further notice. The site is being prepared for a new visitor centre as part of the Kamay 2020 Project.

Closed areas: Walking tracks closed for upgrades

The eastern part of Malabar Headland National Park will be closed on Monday 15 November 2021 from 7am to 4pm due to helicopter operations. The Western Escarpment remains open. This work is delivering walking track upgrades.

The walking track upgrades in the southern section of Malabar Headland National Park are now complete.

Works are underway between the northern entrance and Boora Point, and are expected to be completed by the end of 2021. Please note:

  • Access from the north is closed
  • Access from the south is open to Boora Point only
  • The Western Escarpment remains open

Construction of a new whale watching platform is underway at Cape Solander. The road to Cape Solander, parking and the whale watching platform are closed. Walking tracks remain open.

Closed areas: Royal Coast Track closed at Otford, Monday to Thursday

The Royal Coast Track will be closed Monday to Thursday for upgrade works near Otford lookout from 6 September to early December 2021. The track will remain open Friday to Sunday. When closed, visitors will not be able to access Figure 8 Pools, the Werrong Beach Track or the Palm Jungle Loop Track from the Otford lookout. When closed, Coast Track walkers will have to exit the track at Garawarra Farm. Visitors can still access Figure 8 Pools from Garawarra Farm at any time.

Other planned events: 1080 pest management program

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service will be conducting a baiting program using manufactured baits, fresh baits and Canid Pest Ejectors (CPEs) containing 1080 poison (sodium fluroacetate) for the control of foxes. The program will take place between Tuesday 31 August 2021 and Thursday 31 March 2022 in Towra Point Nature Reserve.

Don’t touch baits or ejector devices. All baiting locations are identifiable by signs.

Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW national parks and reserves. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Fox baiting in these reserves is aimed at reducing their impact on threatened species.

  • in the Kurnell area of Kamay Botany Bay National Park in the Sydney and surrounds region
  • 7am–7.30pm August to May. 7am–5.30pm June to July.

    Areas may have to close at times due to poor weather or fire danger.

  • Park entry fees:

    $8 per vehicle per day applies in the Kurnell area only. The park has coin-operated pay and display machines - please bring correct coins. The park also has credit card accepting payment facilities.
