Closed areas: Big Yango precinct closed

Some parts of Big Yengo National Park are closed for repair until Tuesday 1 March 2022 following significant storm and fire damage. Trails, fords, buildings and other infrastructure need to be repaired to ensure visitor safety and enjoyment.

The closed areas are:

  • Big Yango House
  • Blue Gums campground
  • Mountain Arm campground
  • Big Yango loop trail
  • Yango walking track

Glenbrook Causeway will be closed from Thursday 6 January to Wednesday 26 January 2022 due to flooding which has resulted in the following sites being closed:

Flood warning: Many creeks and rivers may be impassable after recent rains. Check conditions before walking.

The following areas of Blue Mountains National Park are closed due to bushfire or storm damage, road or track works:

Katoomba and Leura 

  • Kanangra to Katoomba - due to the ongoing wet season, Cox's River can flood at short notice and be impassable. Walkers should check conditions before departing.
  • Prince Henry Cliff between Gordon Falls lookout and Olympian lookout, due to landslides. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information.
  • Part of the Lone Lyrebird track between Gordon Road and the War Memorial due to a major washout.  
  • Expect minor delays to allow for track maintenance when using Castle Head walking track.  

Wentworth Falls

  • Part of National Pass from Valley of Waters to Slacks Stairs, due to ongoing rockfall risk.
  • Charles Darwin walk north of Weeping Rock circuit. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information.
  • Ingar Road is closed where it traverses private property at the end of Queen Elizabeth Drive. Ingar campground is therefore closed to vehicles. Walkers and cyclists are permitted where they do not traverse private property.

Blackheath, Medlow Bath, Megalong Valley, Mount Victoria and Bells Line

  • Govetts Leap descent and Rodriguez Pass to Evans lookout walking track, due to fire damage to infrastructure and landslides after storms.
  • Perrys lookdown campground, due to dangerous trees.
  • Walls Cave and Pulpit Rock tracks are closed due to fire and flood damage and associated repairs.
  • No access to Mount Banks walking trails and picnic area due to road works.  Works are scheduled to be completed by Friday 28 January 2022.  
  • Expect minor delays to allow for maintenance work when using Victoria Falls walking track.
  • Grand Canyon oaRd (access to Point Pilcher) closed to all traffic from Monday 24 January until COB Friday 28 January 2022 to allow for road maintenance.  

Lawson, Hazelbrook

  • Plan for minor delays accessing Lawson Ridge fire trail from Queens Road due to planned road repairs. Works are scheduled to be completed by Friday 28 January 2022. 

Canyons and rock climbing areas

  • Access to Pulpit Rock climbing area closed
  • All canyons are open. Visitors should be cautious, as recent flooding may have left debris or moved rocks.

If you arrive at your local national park or other public space and it's too crowded to practise social distancing, it's your responsibility to leave the area.

From Monday 7 February to Wednesday 13 April 2022, Mill Creek campground, Mill Creek picnic area, the Grass Tree Circuit and 11km Walking Track will be closed for an upgrade to Mill Creek Road. There will be no access for vehicles, pedestrians or camping.

Closed areas: Delays on Mount Solitary walking track

You may experience delays on the eastern pass of Mount Solitary walking track on Monday 24 and Tuesday 25 January 2021, due to planned upgrade works.

The track will remain open, however please use caution when ascending or descending the eastern pass during the works.

Safety alerts: Coorongooba campground - River access

Access to Coorongooba campground is via a causeway across Capertee River. This causeway is subject to flooding and is currently greater than 300mm deep. Please do not not attempt to access this currently fast flowing crossing, which is continuing to rise, via 2WD vehicles or motorbikes.

Capertee River can rise unexpectedly with heavy rains falling upstream, making the causeway impassable. Please check the weather forecast before leaving home.

Heavy rainfall has resulted in minor flooding. Please be aware that creek and river levels are elevated. Crossings may not be passable.

Do not cross creeks where water levels are high. Walkers should be prepared to retrace steps.

Lemon Tree Road in Jilliby SCA will be closed from Wednesday 5th January to Friday 4th March 2022 to continue the essential repair of this access road. The work will recommence from the corner of Yambo Forest and continue north for 10kms to the corner of Prickly Ridge Road. Visitors are asked not to venture into this area as the road work continues. Vehicle access to the following camping areas is via natural river bed crossings that require 4WD capability, and are subject to flooding:

Safety alerts: Notice of 1080 baiting

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is conducting a 1080 baiting program using meat baits and M44 ejectors containing 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of wild dogs and foxes. The program is aimed at the protection of the endangered brush-tailed rock wallaby and other native animals, and to reduce attacks on domestic stock in the adjacent Congewai Valley. The program will be ongoing between Monday 11 October 2021 and Friday 15 July 2022.

The program will target the northern side of the park, including some private properties bordering the Congewai Valley with the consent of land-owners. Meat baits will also be delivered by helicopter on one day between Monday 11 October and Friday 15 October 2021.

All baiting locations will be identified by signs.

Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW national parks and reserves. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

The following fire trails are closed due to illegal 4WD damage:

There is no vehicle access across Little Jilliby Jilliby Creek in either direction. Locked gates are in place in several locations.

There is no vehicle access or camping in the eastern half of Coorongooba campground. The closure is to allow the area to settle and regenerate after major earthworks. This area has been substantially upgraded as a part of the NSW Government's Improving Access to National Parks Program.

Campground capacity has been reduced to reflect the area closed. New picnic tables and barbeques will be installed during this closure.

Kanangra to Katoomba (K2K) track has been damaged by fire, storms and flooding. The trail is overgrown with significant understorey brush and grass growth.

Fallen trees, vegetation covered loose rocks and burnt out stump holes may result in slips, trips and falls. Advanced navigation skills are required to undertake this trail.

Watagan Road from the cattle grid at the southern end of Heaton Road south, uphill to the second cattle grid at the Watagans National Park boundary, is currently not suitable for 2WD vehicles. The road is rough and steep in sections because of erosion caused by rain and vehicle traffic. Take care and drive safely.

Safety alerts: Ironbark Road access to picnic area - Last 850m 4WD only

The last 850m along Ironbark Road (Crown Road) to access Ironbark picnic area is currently limited to 4WD vehicles only. This section is not suitable to conventional 2WD vehicles due to a severely eroded hill along the Crown Road. Visitors to this section of the park travelling by conventional 2WD vehicles will have to walk the last 850 metres to access to the start of the park and Ironbark picnic area.

Click Creek fire trail is closed due to extensive storm damage. The trail will remain closed until maintenance works can be completed. Slippery Rock Road is closed due to eroded surfaces making conditions unsafe. The road will reopen, subject to consent conditions once maintenance work is completed.
