Closed areas: Parts of Blue Mountains National Park closed

Many walking tracks, roads and fire trails within Blue Mountains National Park remain closed following sustained wet weather causing subsidence hazards, major landslides or infrastructure upgrades. 

The following areas are closed:

Katoomba and Leura

  • Honeymoon Bridge is closed due to rockfall risk.
  • Honeymoon lookout is closed from Thursday 19 January 2023 due to upgrade works.
  • Federal Pass between Leura Cascades and Dardanelles Pass junction below the Three Sisters is closed due to track maintenance.
  • Fern Bower, Leura Forest and Dardanelles Pass tracks are closed due to track maintenance from Wednesday 1 February to Friday 3 February;
  • Pool of Siloam walking track is closed Wednesday 1 to Friday 3 February for a helicopter operation.
  • Gordon Falls walking track and lookout and Golf Links lookout are closed Wednesday 1 to Friday 3 February for a helicopter operation.
  • Lone Lyrebird track is closed between Gordon Road and the War Memorial, due to subsidence. Detour is in place.
  • Lyrebird Dell walking track is closed due to track maintenance. 
  • Prince Henry Cliff walk is closed between Cliff View lookout and Echo Point from Monday 6 February for upgrade works.
  • Prince Henry Cliff Walk between Tallawalla Lookout and Solitary Restaurant closed Wednesday 1 February to Friday 2 February
  • Prince Henry Cliff walk is closed between Gordon Falls lookout and Olympian lookout, due to landslides. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information.
  • Lady Darley track is closed due to track maintenance.
  • Glenraphael Drive is closed due to major subsidence. Narrow Neck, Ruined Castle and Golden Stairs are accessible to pedestrians and cyclists from Narrow Neck lookout on Cliff Drive.
  • Mount Solitary Route and Ruined Castle campground are closed due to subsidence.
  • Part of Lindeman Pass is closed due to a major landslide below Gladstone lookout. 

Wentworth Falls

  • Valley of the Waters track is closed below Sylvia Falls. There is no access to Roberts Pass, Vera Falls, Hippocrene Falls or Wentworth Falls from Valley of the Waters.
  • Queen Victoria and Empress lookouts are closed from Monday 30 January for upgrades.
  • Charles Darwin walk is closed where it traverses council-managed land due to upgrades. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information.
  • National Pass is closed due to landslide.
  • Wentworth Pass is closed due to landslide.
  • Ingar Road is closed where it traverses private property at the western end. Ingar campers must walk in via Andersons or Bedford Roads.

Blackheath, Mount Victoria and Bells Line of Road

  • Victoria Falls walking track and day use area will be closed on Friday 3rd February 2023 to allow for helicopter operations.  
  • Govetts Leap lookout and picnic area are closed for major upgrade work (opening March 2023).
  • Govetts Creek access routes are closed including Horse track, Govetts Leap Descent and Rodriguez Pass (Bridal Veil Falls) due to landslides.
  • Pulpit walking track is open to Cripps lookout. Track remains closed to Pulpit Rock lookout (Govetts Leap to Cripps lookout is open). Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for further information.
  • No vehicle access to Perry's Lookdown Day Use Area until 6pm on Friday 3rd February 2023 to allow for helicopter operations.  Parking available along Hat Hill Road. 
  • No walking access to Perry's Lookdown Day use Area and waking track to Blue Gum Forest on Thursday 2nd and Friday 3rd February 2023 to allow for helicopter operations.
  • Perrys Lookdown campground is closed.

Woodford, Lawson, Springwood

  • Empire Pass is closed for track maintenance.
  • Lawson Ridge Fire Trail is closed to all vehicles including pedestrians from Monday 30th January until Friday10th February 2023 to allow for road repairs.  

Canyons and rock climbing

  • Climbing and canyoning areas in the Blue Mountains are open unless the access road is closed or the site is listed in this alert.

Safety alerts: Poor road conditions due to wet weather

Please be aware that the following publicly open roads and tracks in Parma Creek Nature Reserve and Jerrawangala National Park are in poor condition:

 

Parma Creek Nature Reserve

  • Parma Creek Fire Trail (a short section between Sandy Creek Fire Trail and Hell Hole Fire Trail)
  • Hell Hole Fire Trail
  • Hell Hole Trail
  • Blackbutt Range Road (between Turpentine Road and Parma Fire Trail)

 

Jerrawangala National Park

  • Yarran Road (between Cottonwood Road and Bollerang Creek crossing)
  • Deans Gap Road (a short rough/muddy section 700m west of Braidwood Rd)

 

A 4WD vehicle is recommended and some roads may be impassable. Works will be undertaken to repair roads when resources and weather conditions allow.

Closed areas: Araluen Road closure affecting access to Deua River campgrounds

Araluen Road is undergoing a lengthy schedule or remediation roadworks by Eurobodalla Shire Council to rectify multiple landslips along the road. This may result in periodic closures of the road, impacting access to campgrounds along Deua River in Deua National Park. An indefinite closure is in place at the 43km mark at Merricumbene, meaning access in to the campgrounds from the western approach is not available.

The following campgrounds must be accessed from the Eastern (Moruya end of Araluen Road):

  • Bakers Flat campground
  • Deua River campground
  • Dry Creek campground

Closed parks: Aerial Pest Control Operation

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service will be undertaking an aerial pest control operation in Kybeyan Nature Reserve, Kybeyan State Conservation Area, Dangelong Nature Reserve, Wadjan Nature Reserve, and Macanally State Conservation Area. 

These areas will be closed from 7am to 7pm from Monday 13th February 2023 to Sunday 19th February 2023

This program is part of an ongoing program in the area, and is to assist in the control of pest animals including deer, pigs and goats. 

This operation could be postponed due to unfavourable weather or logistical problems. 

Warning signs will be placed at access points into the Reserves and State Conservation Areas. Please do not enter these areas of the park during this time.

Safety alerts: Bendethera Valley Campground - Safety Alert

Please use extreme caution if traversing the river crossings and check weather conditions regularly prior to your trip in this area.

During periods of rain, water levels of the river crossings in to the Bendethera Valley campgrounds may become too deep and fast flowing to pass, and extreme caution is advised. Visitors should not attempt crossing the river in vehicles to access the campgrounds during major weather events or during prolonged periods of rain, when river levels can rise rapidly. It is never safe to drive, ride or walk through flood waters. You should check the weather forecast and NPWS website for advice prior to setting out to this remote campground, and if severe weather is forecast, reconsider your trip.

The NPWS Cross Tenure Feral Deer Management Project will be conducting an aerial pest control operation between 6am, Monday 6 February to 6pm, Friday 17 February 2023 (weekdays only).

This program will target feral deer and aims to significantly reduce the number of feral deer on park and adjacent consenting private land. Other pest animals, including pigs, goats, foxes and wild dogs will be targeted if observed during the operation.

This program will operate in the Moonbah/Ingebyra, Cascades and Big Boggy areas of Kosciuszko National Park.

Warning signs will be placed at relevant access points into areas of park. Please do not enter closed areas during this time. Penalties may apply.

Please note: Cascades Trail will remain open. Visitors must stay within 500m of Cascades Trail. There is no access to Teddy's Hut for the duration of the shoot program.

A number of sites in Kosciuszko National Park are closed or may have other restrictions until further notice.

Post-Winter closures due to wet weather trail conditions (closed until further notice)

The following roads are closed:

  • Goobragandara Powerline Road
  • Geehi Dam / Olsens Road
  • BlackJack Trail
  • Manjar Trail
  • Grassy Flat Trail

The following campgrounds are closed:

  • Dubbo Flat

Detour due to construction works 

  • Kings Cross Road and Tumut Ponds Fire Trail - access only via Snow Ridge Road near Cabramurra. No access from Link Road through Selwyn Snow Resort.

Fire-affected areas

Some sections of Kosciuszko National Park which burnt during the 2019/2020 fires remain closed. These areas include:

  • Kiandra Court House
  • Wolgal Hut
  • Pattinson's Hut and Matthew's Cottage
  • Cabramurra township
  • Selwyn Snow Resort
  • Selwyn Snow Resort is being rebuilt following fire damage, and is currently a construction site. For your safety, public access to this area is strictly prohibited and all signage in this area must be followed.

Huts that burnt down in the 2020 fires. The location is open but there is no hut/building:

  • Bradley/O'Briens Hut, Brooks Hut, Delaneys Hut, 4 Mile Hut, Happy's Hut, Harveys Hut, Linesman's No.3 Huts, Round Mountain Hut, Vickeries Hut and Dry Dam Ski Shelter.
    • Warning: 
    • Please take care as there may be broken glass/nails that are uncovered since NPWS made records and cleaned up these sites. 
    • Please do not disturb the sites or remove artefacts.

Tantangara Road and Tantangara Dam access - Snowy 2.0 works:

  • Access to the southern end of Tantangara Reservoir via Quarry trail is closed to the public.
  • Access to the southern end boat ramp is open but may be subject to short-term closures.
  • Current boating and camping access to Tantangara Reservoir will still be available at access points on the northern end of the reservoir, via Port Phillip and Dam trails.

There is an increase in heavy and light vehicle movements on the Snowy Mountains Highway (between Cooma to Tumut) and Link and Tantangara Roads within Kosciuszko National Park. This traffic will continue for a number of years and involves the use of specialised heavy vehicle combinations for transporting materials associated with the Snowy 2.0 project and other projects in the region.

There will also be ongoing maintenance and upgrades to roads in the area as part of the project, particularly along Link and Tantangara Roads.

Safety alerts: High altitude walks - difficult snowdrift crossings

There are still large snow drifts on the high sections of the high altitude walks (above about 2000m in altitude) in Kosciuszko National Park.  With the existing snow and with alpine weather please note the following information when visiting these areas:

 

General:

Be prepared:

  • Low visibility, extreme winds, severe storms and snowfalls can all occur without warning.
  • Wear and carry appropriate clothing, carry navigation equipment and be prepared for extreme conditions.
  • Track surfaces and signs may not be visible.

Travel with care:

  • Choose your routes carefully

Access to The Big Hole walking track requires a river crossing of the Shoalhaven River. 

During periods of rain, water levels of the river crossing may become too deep and fast flowing to pass, and extreme caution is advised. Visitors should not attempt crossing the river during major weather events or during prolonged periods of rain, when river levels can rise rapidly.

NPWS advises walkers to plan ahead and check the river levels in real time at NSW Office of Water - Real Time Water Data (waternsw.com.au) before setting out.

Drum Cave (B13), Bungonia National Park, is closed from 1 November to 1 April to protect breeding and roosting populations of the threatened Large Bent-wing Bat (Miniopteris orianae oceanensis).

All bait material in the pit will be buried under at least 500mm of soil, and clear of waterways so as not to cause pollution of waterways. NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will be conducting a baiting program using meat baits and canid pest ejectors containing 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of wild dogs and foxes. The program will be ongoing until Monday 20 March 2023 in the following areas:

  • Tallaganda National Park
  • Tallaganda State Conservation Area
  • Gourock National Park

All baiting locations will be identifiable by signs.

Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW national parks and reserves. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

The access trail to the beach from Hammerhead Point picnic area is closed until further notice due to dangerous cliff edge caused by dune erosion.

Closed areas: Tantangara Reservoir partial closure

Some parts of Tantangara Reservoir will be closed intermittently from Sunday 1 May 2022 until further notice, whilst the Snowy 2.0 construction activities involving controlled blasts are conducted. Full exclusion zones will be established prior to and during blast operations. The closed areas are:

  • Portions of Tantangara Reservoir, adjacent to the Snowy 2.0 construction site.
  • Tantangara Reservoir boat ramp, adjacent to the Tantangara Dam wall.

Safety alerts: Wet and muddy roads

Due to ongoing wet weather, unsealed roads and vehicle tracks in Murramarang National Park may have significant erosion and muddy sections. A high clearance vehicle and/or 4WD may be required.

North Head Road and the Old Coast Road remain suitable for 2WD vehicles. Road conditions may change at short notice. Take care and drive safely.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service and WaterNSW will be conducting a herbicide treatment program between Tuesday 3 August 2021 and Wednesday 2 February 2022.

This treatment will mainly affect Lake Yarrunga foreshore areas along the Kangaroo River. The program involves the use of garlon 3A for the control of the weed ludwigia longifolia.

Safety alerts: Bingie Dreaming track - Closed and open coastal lakes and lagoons

Bingie Dreaming track crosses openings to several Intermittently Closed and Open Coastal Lakes and Lagoons (ICOLLS). Openings of these lakes and lagoons are often unpredictable and can be quite dramatic. Please be aware that although lakes are usually only open for short periods (weeks), they can be impassable when open.

The Coila Lake opening is at the southern end of Bingie Dreaming track. Please check if this lake is open before you set out. If the opening is impassable, you won't be able to access the village of Tuross to complete the walk.
