NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will be conducting a ground baiting program using dried meat baits containing 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of the introduced European fox. The program will be conducted between 10 August 2021 and 17 December 2021 in Brunswick Heads Nature Reserve (north of the river).

The fox control program is part of the NSW Saving our Species Program for the conservation of priority threatened species such as the beach stone curlew and pied oystercatcher.

All baiting locations will be identifiable by signs.

Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW national parks and reserves. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Closed areas: Mount Nardi - Newton Drive closed

Access to Mount Nardi via Newton Drive is closed for road repairs to a landslip. Newton Drive (within the park) is expected to be closed until the end of September 2021. 

All public vehicle and pedestrian access into the site is closed.

The Historic Nightcap track is still accessible from Rummery Park campground.

Access into Rummery Park campground is via Nightcap Range Road (via Durroughby) only. Due to upgrade works at the Minyon Falls precinct, Minyon Drive is closed and will remain closed until the end of October 2021.

Closed areas: Minyon Falls precinct closed

Minyon Falls precinct and Minyon Grass picnic area are closed for upgrades from Monday 1 March 2021 to Sunday 31 October 2021.

The closure has been extended until Sunday 31 October 2021, due to COVID-related material delays, weather and design issues.

The closed areas include:

  • Minyon Falls picnic area (including Minyon Falls lookout)
  • Minyon Grass picnic area
  • Minyon loop walking track and all access points to the track
  • Boggy Creek track

Access to Rummery Park campground will be via Nightcap Range Road. Signs will be in place around the closed areas.

With the exception of the closed tracks, the multi-use trail network will still be accessible from the Telephone Road trailer carpark via Nightcap Range Road (via Dunoon).

From Tuesday 13 July to Friday 17 December 2021 NSW National Parks will be running a 1080 pest management program in the following parks:

  • Richmond River Nature Reserve
  • Broadwater National Park
  • Bundjalung National Park 

There will be signs at baiting locations. Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW national parks. Pets and working dogs may be affected, and 1080 is lethal to cats and dogs. Pets and working dogs in the vicinity must be restrained or muzzled and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

These programs are run to protect threatened species identified in the NSW Fox Threat Abatement Plan and Saving our Species programs.

We encourage landholders to participate in control programs on private property. Contact North Coast Local Land Services to discuss and arrange programs. Delays may occur due to unsuitable weather conditions.

Closed parks: Wollumbin National Park closed

Wollumbin National Park remains closed until the end of November 2021 due to public safety risks associated with the summit walking track, and to further consult with the Aboriginal community and other key stakeholders about the future management of the site.

Some of the best views of Wollumbin can be found along Pinnacle walk and lookout in Border Ranges National Park. You can also try Goorgana walking track or Pholis Gap walking track in nearby Nightcap National Park, or Best of All lookout at Queensland’s Springbrook National Park.

Closed areas: Eastern park entrance closed

The eastern end of the Tweed Range Scenic Drive at Barkers Vale is currently closed due to a landslip affecting part of the road near Bar Mountain. The road is closed between this entrance and the Bar Mountain picnic area. Visitors can only access the Tweed Range Scenic Drive from the western end of the park via Wiangaree. 

All other campgrounds, lookouts and picnic areas remain open. The Brindle Creek Loop Road is open.

Closed areas: 4WD vehicle beach access via Richmond River Nature Reserve closed

4WD vehicle beach access via Richmond River Nature Reserve will be closed as of Wednesday 31 March 2021. Recreational vehicles are prohibited from entering the reserve from this date.

This follows the multi-tenure closure of South Ballina Beach to recreational vehicles by Crown Lands, Richmond Valley Council, Ballina Shire Council and NPWS, due to ongoing concerns about public safety and impacts to the environment and Aboriginal heritage values. Pedestrian access to the beach via Richmond River Nature Reserve will remain unrestricted. Secured vehicle access will be maintained for emergency services, commercial fishers, Jali Local Aboriginal Land Council and Bandjalang Aboriginal Corporation.
