Closed areas: Bitou bush spraying operation

A helicopter bitou bush spraying operation will take place in a number of national parks in the NPWS Clarence area from Sunday 4 June 2023 to Friday 7 July 2023.

The program will involve the use of the herbicide Metsun (metsulfuron-methyl 600). Some national park beaches and headlands will be temporarily closed during the helicopter operation for public safety.

The affected areas include:

  • Lake Arragan to One Mans Bluff
  • South of Sandon Village to the northern end of Illaroo Beach
  • Wilsons/Wooli Beach: Wilson's headland south to One Tree Point
  • Freshwater Beach and Station Creek Beach hind dunes
  • Wilsons picnic area will be closed on the day for operational purposes.

The areas treated have dense or large bitou bush infestations that are not accessible using other treatment methods. This program is part of a systematic weed control program throughout Yuraygir National Park.

Signage will be in place and NPWS staff will advise of the closure and secure the treatment sites on the day. The program is weather-dependant. Each site will be closed for up to a period of 3 hours.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is conducting an ongoing ground baiting program in Bundjalung National Park from Monday 1st May 2023  to Wednesday 1st November 2023.

The operation will use 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of foxes, and is designed to minimise predator impacts on wildlife, especially threatened species.

Signs will be placed at the entry to the baiting location. Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW National Parks managed lands. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Bundjalung National Park visitors may experience loud aircraft noise until further notice. RAAF training operations from the nearby Evans Head Air Weapons Range may be heard and seem from the Black Rocks campground and Jerusalem Creek paddle route and walking track.

  • The RAAF schedule of planned air operations is available on the Defence Aircraft Noise webpage
  • RAAF schedules for the Air Weapons Range in Bundjalung National Park can change at short notice due to weather or other operational considerations.
  • Aircraft may not utilise the range every day of scheduled operations.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will be conducting a baiting program using meat and manufactured bait products containing 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of foxes and wild dogs. The program will be conducted from Friday 6 January 2023 until Thursday 30 June 2023.

All baiting locations will be identifiable by signs. Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW national parks. Pets and working dogs may be affected, and 1080 is lethal to cats and dogs. Pets and working dogs in the vicinity must be restrained or muzzled and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

These programs are run to protect threatened species identified in the NSW Fox Threat Abatement Plan and Saving our Species programs.

Whian Whian mountain bike trails open with possible machinery on tracks randomly.

The following walking tracks and areas are closed until Friday 30 June 2023 due to flood damage:

  • Minyon Falls walking track from lookout to base of falls
  • Protestors Falls walking track
  • Terania Creek picnic area

Historic Nightcap track will be closed until November 2023.

Pholis Walking track now OPEN

 

The Minyon Drive access road is open.

These closures may be extended and any extension will be posted as soon as possible.

Alternative walking options in the area include:

  • Big Scrub loop and Rocky Creek Dam walk, accessible from Rocky Creek Dam picnic area
  • Mount Matheson loop accessible from Newton Drive.

Please drive with care as local roads leading to the park still have considerable flood damage. There are large pot holes, wash out and some narrow, single lane sections.

A section of the Cape Byron walking track between Wategos Beach and the Cape Byron Lighthouse will be closed from the Wednesday 26 April to Sunday 16 July 2023. Walkers will not be able to access the lighthouse from Wategos Beach.

Safety alerts: Pebbly Beach and Station Creek campground access

Pebbly Beach and Station Creek campgrounds are only accessible by high clearance 4WD vehicles via Bacoongerie Road and McPhillips Road. There are water crossings which can change quickly depending on local rainfall and tidal conditions. 

Access to Pebbly Beach and Station Creek campgrounds is dependent on Clarence Valley Council (CVC) and Forestry Corporation road infrastructure.
