NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is conducting an ongoing ground baiting program from Saturday 2 September 2023 to Monday 18 December 2023. The operation will use 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of foxes.

The program will take place in Bundjalung National Park and Richmond River Nature Reserve.

The program is designed to minimise predator impacts on wildlife, especially threatened shorebird species.

Signs will be placed at the entry to the baiting location. Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW National Parks managed lands. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Bundjalung National Park visitors may experience loud aircraft noise until further notice. RAAF training operations from the nearby Evans Head Air Weapons Range may be heard and seen from the Black Rocks campground and Jerusalem Creek paddle route and walking track.

Please note:

  • The RAAF schedule of planned air operations is available on the Defence Aircraft Noise webpage
  • RAAF schedules for the Air Weapons Range in Bundjalung National Park can change at short notice due to weather or other operational considerations.
  • Aircraft may not utilise the range every day of scheduled operations.

Closed areas: Closed areas due to flood damage

The following areas are open:

  • Minyon Grass Day Use Area
  • Minyon Drive
  • Minyon Falls walking track from Minyon Grass Day Use Area to base of falls only
  • Pholis Walking track
  • Historic Nightcap walking track
  • Whian Whian mountain bike trails
  • Protestors Falls walking track
  • Terania Creek picnic area

The following walking tracks and areas are closed until Friday 29 December 2023 due to flood damage:

  • Minyon Falls walking track from lookout to base of falls

These closures may be extended and any extension will be posted as soon as possible.

Alternative walking options in the area include:

  • Big Scrub loop and Rocky Creek Dam walk, accessible from Rocky Creek Dam picnic area
  • Mount Matheson loop accessible from Newton Drive.

Please drive with care as local roads leading to the park still have considerable flood damage. There are large pot holes, wash out and some narrow, single lane sections.

Safety alerts: Richmond Range NP - limited access via Sextonville Road

Due to a collapsed culvert and associated hole there is limited acccess to Richmond Range National Park via Sextonville Road. 

Richmond Range National Park remains open and is best accessed from the from the south via Richmond Range Roador the west via Peacock Creek Road.

Please drive with care as some local roads leading to the park still have areas of flood damage including pot holes and wash out areas.

Safety alerts: Cambridge Plateau Forest Drive - 2WD access north of Cambridge Plateau picnic area in dry weather only

2WD access along Cambridge Plateau Forest Drive north of Cambridge Plateau Picnic Area limited to dry weather only.

The road has sections that can become slimmery and muddy following rain due to erosion and damage caused by flooding in March 2022. Roadworks are scheduled to repair the road by June 2024.

The road may be temporarily closed when extended periods of wet weather or high rinfall totals are forecast. Please drive with care as some local roads leading to the park still have areas of flood damage including pot holes and wash out areas.

 

Note that 2WD access for guests staying at the private cabin north of the picnic area will be able to access the cabin at all times unless the road is formally closed through an additional alert on the website.
