Closed parks: Richmond River area park closures - Tropical Cyclone Oma

All parks and reserves in the Richmond River area will be closed due to the forecast impacts of Tropical Cyclone Oma. These closures will remain in place unless otherwise extended or removed.

All campgrounds in the Richmond River area have been closed as a precaution from 4pm Thursday 21 February 2019 until Wednesday 27 February 2019. The closed campgrounds include Rummery Park, Black Rocks, Sheepstation Creek and Forest Tops campgrounds. Refunds or re-bookings will be available to all campers that have existing bookings at these campgrounds.

Closed areas: Newton Drive and Historic Nightcap walking track head at Mount Nardi closed

Newton Drive and the Historic Nightcap walking track head at Mount Nardi are closed due to road works and vegetation management. This closure may be extended and any extension will be posted as soon as possible.

Some areas of this park are closed from Thursday 13 December to Friday 14 December due to engineering works.  All public vehicle and pedestrian access into the site will be closed for this period. Access to walking tracks in this section is also closed.

There is no vehicle or pedestrian access to Wollumbin carpark on Mount Warning Road.

Closed areas: Bundjalung National Park and Iluka Nature Reserve - areas closed

Some areas in Bundjalung National Park and Iluka Nature Reserve are closed from 1pm on Friday 22 February to 1pm on Wednesday 27 February 2019. This is because of dangerous weather conditions and large swell associated with Cyclone Oma. This closure may be extended and any extension will be posted as soon as possible.

The closed areas are:

  • Woody Head campground
  • Woody Head cabins, houses and cottages
  • Woody Head picnic area 
  • Shark Bay Beach and vehicle access to Shark Bay
  • Back Beach, Frazers Reef and Iluka Bluff roads and picnic areas
  • Iluka Nature Reserve rainforest walking track.

4WD access to Richmond River Nature Reserve beach is closed. Large, dangerous surf conditions and possible damaging winds are predicted as a result of Cyclone Oma. The closure will be reviewed on Monday 25 February 2019, depending on the cyclone’s impact. This closure may be extended and any extension will be posted as soon as possible.

The Woody Head area in Bundjalung National Park is closed for construction and maintenance works from 4pm Sunday 17 March to 8.30am Monday 25 March 2019, unless the closure is otherwise extended or removed.

  • Woody Head picnic area
  • Woody Head cabins and cottages
  • Forest and Swamp houses

There will be no public access during this closure.

Access to Black Rocks campground from the Pacific Highway via The Gap Road has changed.

The turnoff to The Gap Road has permanently closed as part of the Pacific Highway upgrade. Access to The Gap Road is now via Tuckombil Road, which runs parallel to the highway. 

The turnoff to Tuckombil Road is 2km south of the southern end of the town of Woodburn. Follow Tuckombil Road south for 1.8km, then turn left onto The Gap Road. Black Rocks campground is 20km south along The Gap Road. 

Please drive slowly along The Gap Road because it is unsealed.

Safety alerts: Limited access to Peacock Creek campground

The access roads through Richmond Range State Forest to Richmond Range National Park are currently in very poor condition because of overgrowth and roadway erosion. Therefore, access to Peacock Creek campground from Sextonville Road, Iron Pot Creek Road and Peacock Creek Road is unsuitable for 2WD and 4WD vehicles. Visitors can access Peacock Creek campground from Bruxner Highway along Richmond Range Road and Cambridge Plateau Forest Drive.

Safety alerts: Ilmenite stockpile removal and site rehabilitation

Visitors to Black Rocks campground should expect to encounter large trucks on The Gap Road. This is part of a major project to remove a sand mining tailings stockpile from the park and restore the area to a natural ecosystem. Park visitors are asked to slow down and exercise caution while driving along The Gap Road. No works associated with this project will be undertaken on weekends, public holidays or NSW school holidays. The truck movements are expected to continue until June 2020. Attention for campers at Black Rocks regarding periodic aircraft noise over the campground. The Department of Defence has a training area within Bundjalung National Park north of Black Rocks campground. Aircraft may fly over the campground from time to time. Partial closure. No 4WD beach access from Black Rocks campground. Due to significant storm damage, the 4WD beach access at Black Rocks campground is closed. Vehicles may still drive along Ten Mile Beach north from the Shark Bay 4WD beach access, but cannot exit at Black Rocks.There are no other beach access points on Ten Mile Beach other than Shark Bay 4WD beach access. No 4WD access north of Black Rocks campground.
