Safety alerts: Samurai Beach and Samurai campground - Drive with care

Due to current weather conditions, please drive with caution on Samurai Beach and when accessing Samurai Beach campground.

Please note:

  • Look out for soft sand, erosion, wash outs and drop-offs.
  • Do not attempt to traverse the beach front at this time and, for safety, avoid driving through sea water or large pools of water. Driving conditions can change rapidly. Several vehicles on this beach have ended up in the ocean or swamped by water.
  • If in doubt turn around and back track on the route you've driven, to exit the park.
  • Check conditions before arriving, and if in doubt save your visit for another day.
  • Do not drive over the frontal dune or any vegetation. Fines apply.

NPWS staff will monitor conditions.

Closed areas: Wreck Beach walking track closed

Wreck Beach walking track is closed due to heavy rain undermining the walking track causing significant damage to steps and landings. The closure will be in place for an extended period until repairs are undertaken.

Barriers and signage are in place for visitor safety.

Closed areas: Box Beach carpark night closure

Box Beach carpark is closed to vehicles from 10pm to 5am daily. The gate will be locked during these times.

Box Beach Access Road is also closed to vehicles during this period.

A fee will be charged for vehicles exiting after 10pm. Please call Certis Security on 1300 370 145 for assistance.

Closed areas: Ocean Rocks walking track

Ocean Rocks walking track in Tomaree National Park is closed due to landslide from Thursday 20 February 2020. Signs will be in place around the closed area.

All main visitor areas, including Tomaree Summit walk, will remain open. You can still access Tomaree Head via Tomaree Summit walk.

Safety alerts: Big Rocky boardwalk

A boardwalk in the Big Rocky 4WD carpark is under construction from Tuesday 20 September to Thursday 22 September 2022. This is a worksite and only authorised people can enter. The boardwalk is being built as part of the Tomaree Coast walk.

Part park closure from the concrete pedestrian between Pacific Avenue Carpark, and the Tomaree NP Boundary. This area is closed within Iris Moore Reserve,  area of Tomaree National Park due to Tomaree Coastal Walk construction. 

The closure is to facilitate construction of the Tomaree Coastal Walk Southern Gateway. Pedestrians are encouraged to use alternative access between Pacific Ave Carpark and the Tomaree NP boundary via Ocean Ave.

Closed areas: Gan Gan 4WD entry temporarily closed - no beach front driving

Due to current weather conditions, beach driving is temporarily closed until Monday 10 October 2022 in the Worimi Conservation Lands, from the Gan Gan Road entry at Anna Bay to the Lavis Lane entry at Williamtown. This is for visitor safety and to protect cultural sites. Large swell combined with high tides has made the beach front impassable for all vehicles.

The Gan Gan 4WD entry at Anna Bay is temporarily closed to all vehicles.

The following areas are open:

  • Lavis Lane entry 
  • Fern Bay entry
  • Ganyamalbaa campground 
  • Recreational Vehicle Area 

Please note:

  • Look out for soft sand, erosion, wash outs and drop offs.
  • Do not attempt to traverse the beach front at this time and, for safety, avoid driving through sea water or large pools of water. Driving conditions can change rapidly. Several vehicles on this beach have ended up in the ocean or swamped by water.
  • If in doubt, turn around and back track on the route you've driven, to exit the park.

Safety alerts: 1080 ground baiting

From Tuesday 11 October to Friday 23 December 2022, NSW National Parks is doing 1080 ground baiting of foxes in Hunter Wetlands National Park on Ash Island. The program will reduce the impacts of foxes on wildlife and threatened species in the park.

There will 1080 baiting signs at the entrance to baiting areas. Don't touch baits or ejector devices. Some baits may be buried. Penalties apply for non-compliance. Domestic pets, including dogs, are not permitted in national parks or reserves. 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) baits are lethal to domestic dogs and cats. In the event of accidental poisoning, seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Gan Gan entry and part of Worimi Conservation Lands beachfront are closed to vehicles during high tide for visitor safety. The beachfront becomes impassable at high tide due to hazardous surf conditions and beachfront erosion.

Driving conditions can change rapidly on the beachfront. Please follow the directions of National Parks and Wildlife Service personnel, and do not drive over the frontal dune or any vegetation.

The following areas are safe and open for 4WD access:

  • Recreational vehicle area
  • Ganyamalbaa campground

Closed parks: Corrie Island Nature Reserve closed for shorebird nesting season

Corrie Island Nature Reserve will be closed from Friday 16 September 2022 to Friday 31 March 2023 for the protection of beach-nesting shorebirds.

Corrie Island is an important breeding site for endangered little terns and pied oystercatchers. The island is closed to visitors for the duration of the nesting season to reduce disturbance that can cause egg or chick deaths.

During the closure period visitors may not land anywhere on Corrie Island, and only NPWS staff and authorised volunteers are allowed on the island. Pest control activities may be undertaken on the island during this time.
