Samurai Beach is closed until Friday 26 June 2020, due to extreme weather conditions. There are strong wind warnings, and large swells, tides and powerful surf conditions have been experienced.

NSW National Parks staff will monitor the conditions daily.

Closed areas: Fingal Island access trail and Point Stephens Lighthouse - closed to vehicles

The Fingal Island access trail and Point Stephens Lighthouse are closed to vehicles.

The sea conditions at the spit are variable, unpredictable and subject to change at short notice. People have drowned attempting to cross the Fingal Spit, and even at low tides the spit can be impacted by fast-moving water.

Other planned events: Aerial spraying of bitou bush

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service is conducting an aerial herbicide spraying operation between Monday 11 May 2020 and Sunday 28 June 2020. For public safety, the areas being treated will be closed temporarily on the day they are sprayed. Advice on specific areas to be temporarily closed will be provided a week before spraying.

This spraying program is being carried out to control bitou bush on headlands and beaches in:

  • Booti Booti National Park
  • Saltwater National Park
  • Tomaree National Park
  • Myall Lakes National Park (including Broughton Island)
  • Khappinghat Nature Reserve
  • Stormpetrel Nature Reserve (completed)
  • Little Broughton Island Nature Reserve (completed)
  • Some adjoining Crown Lands

The program is expected to take 8 to 10 days to complete, dependant on weather conditions.

Spraying is planned in the following areas:

  • Thursday 21 May 2020 to Wednesday 27 May 2020 inclusive - No aerial spraying is planned at this stage due to forecast unsuitable weather.

The herbicide used is Metsulfuron methyl 600WG. NPWS staff will be present during the helicopter spray operation. Please ensure you follow the advice on all warning signs and the directions given by NPWS staff.

Closed areas: Maintenance of management trails

NPWS is undertaking routine maintenance of several management trails and roads in Glenrock State Conservation Area. These include include Banksia fire trail, Gun Club Road, Yuelarbah management trail, Baileys fire trail, Easement trail and Sewer Link. Works are expected to be completed mid May 2020.

Individual sections of the management trails and roads will be closed to the general public, including mountain bike riders, trail runners and other park users, while works are underway.

Road closure and temporary signs will be installed on track sections before work starts.

Works will involve the repair and maintenance of the gravel road surface and the existing drainage structures within the corridors.

The Hickson Street gliding pad and lookout is restricted access to hang gliding and paragliding pilots only providing social distancing measures are maintained.

The restricted access is until further notice to protect the health and safety of our visitors and staff.

Access to Burwood Beach via Hickson Street walking track is still permitted while visitors follow social distancing measures.

Ocean Rocks walking track in Tomaree National Park is closed due to landslide from Thursday 20 February 2020. Signs will be in place around the closed area.

Safety alerts: No driving on dunes, except for in the Recreational Vehicle Area

All dunes between the Lavis Lane and Anna Bay access areas are closed to driving. Drive only on the waterfront, or in the Recreational Vehicle Area (RVA). The RVA is located south of the Lavis Lane access, and is now open for dune driving.

Be aware of tides. At high tide, sections of the beach may be impassable. Plan your trip so that you travel at low tide. If the beachfront is too narrow to pass safely, retrace your route. Do not attempt to bypass around the dunes.

We recommend that you do not drive on the beach 2 hours before and after high tide. Visit the Bureau of Meteorology website for further information.
