Closed areas: Samurai Beach and campground closed

SAMURAI BEACH & CAMPGROUND CLOSED until Wednesday 28th April 2021

The Samurai Beach Access Trail is flooded and there is no vehicle access to the beach front or the campground.

Recent flood events at Port Stephens generated large amounts of run off and the ground water has risen. Water that would normally drain through the sand to the Anna Bay Sandbeds remains pooled at various low points. The sand itself is water logged and becomes like ‘quick sand’. Vehicles that get stuck or bogged may not be recoverable. The flooding has forced the temporary closure of beach front driving at Samurai Beach for public safety and to protect the important cultural landscape.

Drivers are reminded not to drive on the frontal dune or any vegetation at any times. Fines apply.

Park closure signs have been installed at all entrances and NPWS staff will be advising visitors of the closure. NPWS will continue to monitor the conditions and will re-open the beach after Anzac Day when conditions improve.

Please note that Worimi Conservation Lands is closed to 4WDs during this time period also, beach driving conditions will be assessed next week.

Penalties apply for non-compliance. For more information, please call the NPWS Nelson Bay area office on 02 4984 8200 or visit the NSW National Parks safety page for park safety guidelines.

Closed areas: Worimi Conservation Lands closed to beach driving

Camping, beach driving and the recreational vehicle area remain temporarily closed at the Worimi Conservation Lands.

The weather experienced recently has caused wave action to erode the beach front, creating steep drop offs and large areas of very soft sand, making the beach impassable and unsafe for vehicles. In addition, large pools of water are present on the beach front.

There is insufficient beach remaining to allow for the safe traverse by 4WD vehicles.

Park closure signs have been installed at the entrances and NPWS staff will be advising of the closure. NPWS will continue to monitor the conditions and will re-open the beach when conditions improve.

Please note that Samurai Beach in Tomaree National Park is also temporarily closed to vehicles following flooding.

Penalties apply for non-compliance. For more information, please call the NPWS Nelson Bay area office on 02 4984 8200 or visit the NSW National Parks safety page for park safety guidelines.
