Closed areas: Morisset picnic area

The Morisset section of Lake Macquarie State Conservation Area is closed from Thursday 20 December 2019. There is now no public access to the following areas:

  • The  Morisset Hospital site
  • Lake Macquarie State Conservation Area foreshore
  • Morisset picnic area.

Alternative picnic areas are located in the Lake Macquarie Council area in and around the Morisset and Bonnells Bay foreshores. There is no public access to view the kangaroos that frequent the hospital site. Closed areas: Update to visitor area closures

Many COVID-19 restrictions have now been lifted from visitor precincts and facilities. However, several tracks and trails will remain closed while upgrades and remediation works are completed. 

Please note the following updates:

  • Tunks Ridge campground remains closed until further notice while staff assess safety concerns 
  • Bookings for Twin Beaches South and North campgrounds are now available online.

Please remember to practice appropriate social distancing requirements and good hygiene. From Friday 29 January 2021, the maximum group size for an outdoor gathering will be increased to 50 people, including children. Groups are still expected to maintain social distancing. If you arrive at a national park or other public space and it is too crowded to practice social distancing, it is your responsibility to leave the area. Do not wait to be instructed by NPWS or police.

The closing of toilets and other facilities will be decided on a case-by-case basis, with necessary site assessments considering the management of health and safety risk to visitors and staff, and available resourcing to maintain facilities.

Access to sanitation products and running water cannot be guaranteed. We recommend bringing hand soap, hand wipes and toilet paper with you to maintain good hygiene as advised by the NSW Government.

There will be changed traffic conditions on Ku-ring-gai Chase Road, Mount Colah from 9.30am to 3pm on Wednesday 10 March until Thursday 11 March 2021, inclusive.

Safety alerts: No driving on dunes, except for in the Recreational Vehicle Area

All dunes between the Lavis Lane and Anna Bay access areas are closed to driving. Drive only on the waterfront, or in the Recreational Vehicle Area (RVA). The RVA is located south of the Lavis Lane access, and is now open for dune driving.

Be aware of tides. At high tide, sections of the beach may be impassable. Plan your trip so that you travel at low tide. If the beachfront is too narrow to pass safely, retrace your route. Do not attempt to bypass around the dunes.

We recommend that you do not drive on the beach 2 hours before and after high tide. Visit the Bureau of Meteorology website for further information.

Closed areas: Beach front driving temporarily closed

Beachfront driving from Gan Gan Road at Anna Bay to Lavis Lane at Williamtown in the Worimi Conservation Lands is closed to all vehicles from Wednesday 3 March 2021 until further notice for public safety and to protect the important cultural landscape.  Large swell combined with high tides has created erosion, soft sand and steep drop-offs, making the beach impassable to all vehicles.

Dune driving in the Recreational Vehicle Area (RVA) south of the Lavis Lane entrance remains open, and is accessible via the Lavis Lane entrance only.  Staff will continue to monitor the conditions and will re-open the beachfront to driving when conditions improve.

Safety alerts: Martinsville Hill Road - Roadworks

Essential roadworks will be commencing on Martinsville Hill Road from Thursday 4 March 2021 in Jilliby State Conservation Area. The works are taking place between the eastern park boundary (from the start of the gravel road section) past the Wishing Well to the intersection of Watagan Forest Road. 

The work involves re-gravelling some sections and improving drainage. If you are visiting Jilliby State Conservation Area or the adjoining state forests, please drive with caution and follow directions of Forest Corporation staff who are undertaking the work and traffic controllers on duty.

Monkey Face Road and Gap Creek Road are temporarily closed from Thursday 7 January 2021 due to rain and road surface damage. Work is scheduled and will be completed as soon as possible. There is no vehicle access to the Gap Creek or Monkey Face lookouts until the work is completed. Walkers are free to enter and walk to the lookouts.

Safety alerts: 1080 fox baiting program underway

A 1080 fox baiting program will be happening in Bouddi National Park from Thursday 11 February to Thursday 1 April 2021. Foxes are major predators of native wildlife.

1080 poison baits will be buried in a continuous and ongoing manner throughout Bouddi National Park during this time. 

There will be warning signs in target areas and visitors must not touch baits. Dogs and cats are prohibited in NSW national parks. 1080 Poison is lethal to dogs and cats, and in the event of accidental poisoning, seek immediate veterinary assistance.

We encourage you to:

  • Plan your visit outside of peak periods of 10am to 2pm
  • Be prepared to move on if it is no longer possible for you to maintain a COVID-safe distance from other visitors. It is your responsibility to leave the area. Do not wait to be instructed by NPWS or police.

Safety alerts: 1080 fox and wild dog program underway

1080 poison feral animal baiting restarts on selected roads in Watagans National Park from Tuesday 17 November 2020 to Wednesday 30 June 2021. The baiting is also occurring on some adjacent properties with the permission of land-owners. Roads affected include:

  • Rope Road
  • Bowmans Road and part Harris fire trail
  • Ingles Road
  • Carrolls Road
  • Georges Road
  • Turners Road

Visitors and neighbours are reminded that domestic animals are not permitted in the national park at any time. 1080 poison is toxic to domestic cats and dogs. Seek urgent veterinary care if you suspect your animal has taken a bait.

The baiting is targeting foxes and wild dogs which are a major predator of native wildlife including brush-tailed rock wallabies.

Watagan Road from the cattle grid at the southern end of Heaton Road south, uphill to the second cattle grid at the Watagans National Park boundary, is currently not suitable for 2WD vehicles. The road is rough and steep in sections because of erosion caused by rain and vehicle traffic. Take care and drive safely.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service will be conducting a baiting program using manufactured baits, fresh baits and Canid Pest Ejectors (CPEs) containing 1080 poison (sodium fluroacetate) for the control of foxes. The program is continuous and ongoing between Monday 1 February and Saturday 31 July 2021 in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. Don’t touch baits or ejector devices. Penalties apply for non-compliance.

All baiting locations are identifiable by signs.

Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW national parks and reserves. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Fox baiting in this reserve is aimed at reducing their impact on threatened species.

The Marramarra Ridge public access road, from Bloodwood Road to the Marramarra Ridge trail gate, should be driven slowly and with care in 2WD vehicles. The road surface has become rough and potholed due to wear and tear, compounded by impacts from heavy rains in February 2020. Staged roadworks are scheduled to occur from December 2020 to June 2021.

The last 850m along Ironbark Road (Crown Road) to access Ironbark picnic area is currently limited to 4WD vehicles only. This section is not suitable to conventional 2WD vehicles due to a severely eroded hill along the Crown Road. Visitors to this section of the park travelling by conventional 2WD vehicles will have to walk the last 850 metres to access to the start of the park and Ironbark picnic area.

Closed areas: Parts of Sugarloaf State Conservation Area closed

Parts of Sugarloaf State Conservation Area are closed for approved underground mining operations. The affected areas (see map) have been closed to protect visitor safety, because they're subject to subsidence and remediation activities from the mining operations.

The Great North Walk remains open. An update will be provided should this situation change.

If you're visiting the park, please be aware of subsidence and pollution incidents that took place in 2013, which were greater than what was expected from normal mining operations. Maculata fire trail west from Jilliby Road linking to Daniels Point fire trail and Watagan Forest Road are closed due to 4WD damaged roads and trails. There is no through road access across Little Jilliby Jilliby Creek in either direction.

Click Creek fire trail is closed due to extensive storm damage. The trail will remain closed until maintenance works can be completed. Slippery Rock Road is closed due to eroded surfaces making conditions unsafe. The road will reopen, subject to consent conditions once maintenance work is completed.

Closed areas: Morisset picnic area

The Morisset section of Lake Macquarie State Conservation Area is closed from Thursday 20 December 2019. There is now no public access to the following areas:

  • The  Morisset Hospital site
  • Lake Macquarie State Conservation Area foreshore
  • Morisset picnic area.

Alternative picnic areas are located in the Lake Macquarie Council area in and around the Morisset and Bonnells Bay foreshores. There is no public access to view the kangaroos that frequent the hospital site.
