Closed areas: Parts of Blue Mountains National Park closed

Many walking tracks, roads and fire trails within Blue Mountains National Park remain closed following sustained wet weather causing subsidence hazards, major landslides or infrastructure upgrades. 

The following areas are closed:

Katoomba and Leura

  • Honeymoon Bridge is closed due to rockfall risk.
  • Honeymoon lookout is closed from Thursday 19 January 2023 due to upgrade works.
  • Fern Bower, Leura Forest and Dardanelles Pass are closed for a helicopter operation from Tuesday 31 January to Friday 3 February.
  • Prince Henry Cliff walk between Tallawalla lookout and Solitary Restaurant is closed for a helicopter operation from Tuesday 31 January to Friday 3 February.
  • Federal Pass between Leura Forest and Dardanelles Pass junction below the Three Sisters is closed due to track maintenance.
  • Lone Lyrebird track is closed between Gordon Road and the War Memorial, due to subsidence. Detour is in place.
  • Lyrebird Dell walking track is closed due to track maintenance. 
  • Prince Henry Cliff walk is closed between Gordon Falls lookout and Olympian lookout, due to landslides. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information.
  • Lady Darley track is closed due to track maintenance.
  • Glenraphael Drive is closed due to major subsidence. Narrow Neck, Ruined Castle and Golden Stairs are accessible to pedestrians and cyclists from Narrow Neck lookout on Cliff Drive.
  • Mount Solitary Route and Ruined Castle campground are closed due to ongoing subsidence.
  • Part of Lindeman Pass is closed due to a major landslide below Gladstone lookout. 

Wentworth Falls

  • Valley of the Waters track is closed below Sylvia Falls. There is no access to Roberts Pass, Vera Falls, Hippocrene Falls or Wentworth Falls from Valley of the Waters.
  • Queen Victoria and Empress lookouts are closed from Monday 30 January for upgrades.
  • Charles Darwin walk is closed where it traverses council-managed land due to upgrades. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information.
  • National Pass is closed due to landslide.
  • Wentworth Pass is closed due to landslide.
  • Ingar Road is closed where it traverses private property at the west end. Ingar campers must walk in via Andersons or Bedford Roads.

Blackheath, Medlow Bath, Megalong Valley, Mount Victoria and Bells Line of Road

  • Govetts Leap lookout and picnic area are closed for major upgrade work (opening February 2023)
  • No access to Perry's Lookdown Day Use Area from COB Wednesday 25th January 2023 until Tuesday 31st January COB to allow for helicopter operations.  Parking available along Hat Hill Rd. 
  • No access to walkers Perry's Lookdown waking track or day use area on Tuesday 31st January 2023 to allow for helicopter operations.  
  • No vehicle access to Pierces Pass picnic area from Monday 16 until Friday 27 January 2023 to allow for roadworks. Parking is available at top carpark.  Pierces Pass walking track remains open.  
  • Grose Valley and Govetts Gorge access routes are closed including Horse track, Govetts Descent and Rodriguez Pass (Bridal Veil Falls) due to landslides. 
  • Burra Korain Camping area remains closed due to landslides and rock falls.  
  • Pulpit walking track is open to Cripps lookout.  Track remains closed to Pulpit Rock lookout (Govetts Leap to Cripps lookout is open). Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information.
  • Perrys Lookdown campground is closed.

Woodford, Lawson, Springwood

  • Empire Pass is closed for track maintenance.
  • Lawson Ridge Fire Trail is closed to all vehicles including pedestrians from Monday 30th January until Friday10th February 2023 to allow for road repairs.  

Canyons and rock climbing

  • Climbing and canyoning areas in the Blue Mountains are open unless the access road is closed or the site is listed in this alert.

Other incidents: Oaks Singles track closed for maintenance

Maintenance works are underway on Oaks Singles track from Friday 28 January 2022 until further notice, due to erosion issues and major safety concerns.

The track will undergo vegetation maintenance followed by the addition of sandstone surface. The works are to stabilise some sections and rock armouring in poorly drained sections.

Oaks Singles track will be open on weekends.

Closed areas: Perry'S Lookdown Walking Track

Perry's Lookdown Walking Track within Blue Mountains Area will be closed all day on Tuesday 31st January to allow for helicopter operations.  There is no access to any pedestrians or vehicles to the day use area or lookout.  For further information please contact the Blue Mountains Heritage Centre on 47878877.

Safety alerts: Colong-Oberon stock route - 4WD only access

The 4WD Colong Oberon historic stock route to Yerranderie is only accessible via 4WD vehicles. Some creek crossings may be inaccessible for vehicles with low clearance.

Blue Gum Swamp fire trail in Blue Mountains National Park is closed from Monday 23 January 2023 to Friday 10 February 2023, for flood damage repairs.

Ruined Castle campground and the track beyond Ruined Castle to Mount Solitary is closed until late January 2023. Ruined Castle walking track to Ruined Castle remains open. 

Work is underway to clear fallen trees and repair the track.

Closed areas: Govetts Leap lookout

The visitor precinct at Govetts Leap lookout in Blue Mountains National Park, Blackheath is closed for upgrades from Thursday 11 August 2022 to February 2023.

The carpark and lookout will be closed during construction.

Blue Mountains Heritage Centre and the toilets at Govetts Leap lookout will remain open.

Access to walking tracks will be provided to tracks that are open. Track closures are updated regularly. Check the NPWS alerts page for updates.

The works include improvements to the lookout and carpark, and construction of new accessible pathways in the area.

From Thursday 3 November 2022 to Monday 1 May 2023 NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is conducting ongoing ground baiting program in the following areas: 

  • Abercrombie River National Park
  • Kanangra-Boyd National Park
  • Blue Mountains National Park (southern sector)
  • Wollemi National Park (Wolgan Valley area) 
  • Jenolan Karst Conservation Area
  • Turon National Park
  • Marrangaroo National Park

The operation will use 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of wild dogs and foxes.

The program is designed to minimise predator impacts on wildlife, especially threatened species, and to minimise impact of wild dogs on neighbouring stock.

Signs will be placed at the entry to the baiting location. Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW National Parks managed lands. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Closed areas: Ingar Road partial closure

There is no vehicle or pedestrian access to the section of Ingar Road past the end of Queen Elizabeth Drive. Please do not enter private property.

This means there is no vehicle access to Ingar campground. Campers must hike in via Andersons fire trail or Bedford Road.

Prospect Nature Reserve is closed to the public indefinitely as it's part of a Special Water catchment area. There is no public access at any time.

Closed areas: Ben Bullen trail (Moffits trail) closed due to trail damage

The following areas are closed until trail conditions allow repair work to be undertaken:

  • Ben Bullen trail (Moffits trail) from Hutchinson Road heading east to the Gardens of Stone State Conservation Area boundary
  • Baal Bone Gap picnic area 

The trail has several large bog holes that are impassable to all vehicles. Due to these bog holes being impassable there is no through access to Wolgan Road from the Castlereagh Highway.

Remember, it’s never safe to drive, ride or walk through flood waters, so you’ll need to reschedule your visit and avoid travel through areas in this park. Check Live Traffic NSW for up-to-date information about road closures. For assistance during severe weather visit the NSW SES website.
