Safety alerts: Seamans Hut toilet closed

Seaman's Hut toilet is still under construction and will remain closed for winter 2020. The construction site has several fenced compounds that will remain in place for winter. If using the area surrounding Seaman's Hut or the new toilet when construction is complete, please take care and use the area carefully as there are obstacles partly under the snow.

Closed areas: Essential annual road maintenance - 1080 Road closed

1080 Road will be closed from Monday 18 May to Friday 29 May 2020 for essential roadworks, except on Saturday 23 May and Sunday 24 May 2020 when public access will be allowed. Please use caution and drive to conditions on these days. Signs will be in place marking the closure. Beaches in the area remain open with walking access from Mystery Bay. In the event of wet weather the closure may need to be extended for a short period.

The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will be conducting an aerial baiting program using meat baits containing 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of wild dogs and foxes. The program will take place between Monday 18 May 2020 and Friday 5 June 2020 in the following parks and reserves:

  • Kosciuszko National Park
  • Brindabella National Park
  • Bimberi Nature Reserve
  • Black Andrew Nature Reserve

All baiting locations will be signposted.

Please remember that domestic pets are not permitted on NPWS Estate. Pets and working dogs may be affected, and 1080 is lethal to cats and dogs. Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

The entire Thredbo Valley track is currently closed due to current weather and track conditions. 

Track conditions will  be reassessed following the current weather event, with a view of reopening sections if possible.

Closed areas: Closed areas in Kosciuszko National Park

NPWS has closed a number of visitor facilities, attractions and sites in Kosciuszko National Park until further notice. This includes a number of areas closed due to the recent bushfires.

Some picnic areas with picnic tables and barbecues will open, but visitors should take their own precautions:

  • BYO sanitiser and disinfectant
  • Careful of touch points (assume contamination and act accordingly)
  • If sick, stay home
  • If crowded, leave, and always maintain social distancing
  • We need your help to stay open

Camping and accommodation

  • All campgrounds, camping and on-park NPWS-managed accommodation venues remain closed. This is to protect the health and safety of our visitors and staff.
  • If you had a booking at an NPWS-managed accommodation venue you will receive a refund

Visitor centres

Our visitor centres at Snowy region (Jindabyne), Tumut, Khancoban, Yarrangobilly Caves and Perisher Valley office are closed, but we welcome your phone calls and emails. This is to protect the health and safety of our visitors and staff.

Other closures

  • Individual businesses such as cafes and restaurants are making their own decisions about whether to open for business, ensuring they are compliant with current restrictions.
  • Bullocks Hut, including the access track from the Ski Tube Terminal, is closed due to maintenance works.

Fire-affected areas

Some sections of Kosciuszko National Park which have been burnt remain closed. This is because they still may pose a risk to visitors due to dangerous trees and damaged infrastructure.

Specific areas which are closed due to the fires include:

  • Areas within the northern section of the park:
    • Yarrangobilly Caves
    • Kiandra
    • Landers Falls lookout
    • Wolgal Hut
    • Buddong Falls
  • Cabramurra township. Snowy Hydro's operational town of Cabramurra suffered significant fire damage and, for safety reasons, is temporarily closed.

The following key roads in Kosciuszko National Park remain closed due to fire damage:

  • Alpine Way area:
    • Olsens Lookout Road
    • Geehi Dam Road
    • Geehi Walls trail
    • Major Clews trail
    • Grassy Flats trail
    • Murray Gates trail
    • Bicentennial trail
  • Cabramurra area:
    • Link Road from Snowy Mountains Highway to Goat Ridge Road
    • Tooma Road - KNP5 (Khancoban to Cabramurra Road) - expected reopening December 2020
    • Goats Ridge Road
    • Elliot Way - expected reopening May 2021
    • Kings Cross Road
  • Snowy Mountains Highway area:
    • Yarrangobilly Caves Road
    • Goobragandra Power Line Road

These roads and trails will remain closed until hazardous trees are treated, debris is removed and repair work is completed.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will be conducting a baiting program using oats containing pindone (pindone, sodium salt) poison for the control of rabbits. The program will take place between Monday 18 May 2020 and Friday 29 May 2020 at Thredbo, within Kosciuszko National Park.

All baiting locations will be signposted. Free feeding using non-poisoned oats will be undertaken before using pindone oats.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is conducting aerial baiting programs using 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of wild dogs and foxes.

These programs will happen from Monday 18 May until Saturday 6 June 2020. They are part of an integrated pest animal control strategy, aimed at minimising the impacts of wild dog and foxes on neighbouring stock.

Baiting programs will be conducted in the Thredbo/Ingebyra, Dalgety/Paupong and Corrowong/Tombong/Merriangaah Wild Dog Plan Areas.

This includes the following sections of Kosciuszko National Park:

  • Moonbah
  • Ingebyra
  • Lower Snowy
  • Paupong
  • Numbla Vale
  • Byadbo
  • Corrowong

Baiting programs will also be happening in Merriangaah and Quidong nature reserves.

Safety alerts: Bingie Dreaming track - closed and open coastal lakes and lagoons

Bingie Dreaming track crosses openings to several Intermittently Closed and Open Coastal Lakes and Lagoons (ICOLLS). Openings of these lakes and lagoons are often unpredictable and can be quite dramatic. Please be aware that although lakes are usually only open for short periods (weeks), they can be impassable when open.

The Coila Lake opening is at the southern end of Bingie Dreaming track. Please check if this lake is open before you set out. If the opening is impassable, you won't be able to access the village of Tuross to complete the walk.

For visitor safety, campfires and solid fuel fires (wood, heat beads, charcoal, briquettes, hexamite) are not permitted at Middle Beach campground or picnic area.

  • is under the direct control of an adult
  • placed or located in an area where there is no combustible material within 2m
  • there is an adequate water supply to extinguish fire should it start next to the appliances
  • and it is not a Total Fire Ban

Safety alerts: Some fire trails not suitable for trailer access

Within Deua National Park some trails are not suitable for trailer access. National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has had advisory signs in place for some time to encourage people towing 4WD trailers to avoid some of the steeper, harder-to-maintain trails in Deua National Park. However, due to ongoing damage to trails as a result of continued inappropriate use of 4WDs towing trailers on these signposted trails, NPWS is now prohibiting the use of trailers on the following trails in Deua National Park:

  • Dampier Mountain trail
  • Oulla Creek trail
  • Minuma Range trail
  • Merricumbene trail
  • Mongamula trail
  • Dry Creek trail

It is now an offence to tow trailers on these trails. The penalty for towing trailers on these trails is a $300 penalty infringement notice, or higher if the matter is taken to court. By keeping trailers away from these identified trails, you reduce the safety risk to yourself and others, reduce damage to the park environment and your assets and reduce park maintenance costs, a benefit to everyone. Trailer access to Bendethera is still available from Moruya via Little Sugarloaf Road and Bendethera trail.
