Closed areas: Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse Keepers' Cottages closed

Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse Keepers' Cottages are closed for conservation works. The Assistant Light keepers' Cottages (North and South) are closed until further notice.

The Head Light keepers' cottage will re-open for bookings from Friday 31 August 2018.

Closed areas: Seismick mountain bike track

Seismick mountain bike track will be closed from Tuesday 31 July to Monday 17 September 2018 due to upgrade works. The work will include reshaping and drainage works to improve the sustainability and quality of the ride experience. NPWS will undertake the earth moving preparation (August and September) for a Glenrock Trail Alliance volunteer build day in September. NPWS will also undertake weed management in the precinct enhance the biodiversity of the pre-disturbed environment. 

Seismick will not be be open to the public during the works process. Alternative access via Gun Club Road.

Closed areas: The Wells campground - temporarily closed

The Wells campground is temporarily closed for essential maintenance from Tuesday 24 July 2018. The maintenance work includes improvements to drainage, site leveling and replacing damaged fencing and fireplaces.

The campground will be re-opened as soon as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Safety alerts: Roads slippery on the Barrington Tops

Following recent roadworks and subsequent wet weather, the roads on the Barrington Tops - in particular Tubrabucca Road and Barrington Tops Forest Road (Scone - Gloucester Road) - have become slippery. While these roads remain open, please use extreme care when driving. Motorists are advised to avoid using Tubrabucca Road.

Gloucester Falls lookout is closed due to a major upgrade. The site is closed to visitors to allow these works to be completed safely.

Closed areas: Annual winter closure of 4WD trails on Barrington Tops

4WD trails on Barrington Tops will be closed to all vehicles from 1 June 2018 to 1 October 2018 for annual seasonal closure. The closed trails are:

  • Barrington trail (south and central)
  • Paddys Ridge trail
  • Butchers Swamp trail
  • Bullock Brush trail
  • Tugalow trail
  • Thunderbolts trail

Trail closures mean there is no vehicle access to the following campgrounds during this period:

  • Little Murray
  • Junction Pools
  • Gummi Falls

Watagan Forest Road in Jilliby State Conservation Area and the southern section of Wyong State Forest is not suitable for 2WD vehicles due to rain and vehicle damage.  4WD access is available from the Jilliby Road access in the south, north to the Middle Ridge Road Intersection.

Closed areas: Phytophthora quarantine area - Barrington Tops National Park

Phytophthora is a mould that causes dieback in plants. It has been found on the plateau in Barrington Tops National Park, predominantly on the Watergauge trail between Beean Beean and Black Swamp. The affected area is under quarantine with absolutely no visitor access.

Phytophthora is readily spread by mud carried by walkers' shoes and mountain-bike tyres. There are boot wash stations across the plateau for walkers to use, to ensure their boots 'Start clean, Stay clean'.

There is no vehicle access to the final 5km of Barrington trail, beyond the Junction Pools turn, due to safety issues caused by deteriorating trail conditions. Visitors can still access Junction Pools and Little Murray campgrounds. Visitors can also access Mount Barrington on foot or by bicycle. Penalties apply for non-compliance. A 1080 fox baiting program is being conducted at Tomago and Hexham within Hunter Wetlands National Park. 1080 poison can affect non-target species including cats and dogs. The pubic are advised not to allow their pets to stray into these sections of Hunter Wetlands National Park. Domestic pets are not allowed in Hunter Wetlands National Park, either on a leash or off-leash. The baiting program will finish on 11 September 2017.

Safety alerts: No driving on the dunes, except for the Recreational Vehicle Area

Drive only on the waterfront, or in the Recreational Vehicle Area (RVA).

  • All dunes between the Lavis Lane and Anna Bay accesses are closed to driving.
  • The RVA, which is located south of the Lavis Lane access, is open for dune driving.

Tide warning: At high tide, sections of the beach may be impassable, plan your trip to travel at low tide. If the beach front is too narrow to pass safely, retrace your route. Do not attempt to bypass around the dunes. It is recommended you do not drive on the beach 2 hours before and after high tide. Visit the Bureau of Meteorology website for further information

Closed areas: Parts of Sugarloaf State Conservation Area are closed to the public

Parts of Sugarloaf State Conservation Area are closed for approved underground mining operations. The affected areas (see map) have been closed to protect visitor safety because they are subject to subsidence and remediation activities from the mining operations.

The Great North Walk remains open. An update will be provided should this situation change.

Visitors to the park are asked to be aware of subsidence and pollution incidents that took place in this in 2013, which were greater than what was expected from normal mining operations. They included a cliff fall in the north, and a subsidence and grout leak incident in the central part of Sugarloaf State Conservation Area. Further details can be found on the Office of Environment and Heritage website.

If you are planning to visit the park during this time, please stay on formed tracks and trails and observe all barriers, warning signs and safety messages. Camping at Stockton Beach remains closed until further notice - Stockton Bight Camping remains closed while the area continues to recover, following severe winter storms.The beach is still open for people to visit, and there are a large variety of commercial tours available daily.
