Safety alerts: Potential closure on busy days due to high visitation

Somersby Falls picnic area and Somersby Falls Road may close between Saturday 23 January and Tuesday 26 January 2021 due to expected increased visitation as a result of forecast warm weather and the Australia Day public holiday.

Please reconsider your trip to this small picnic area during this period to assist in compliance with NSW COVID-19 health orders and to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission.

Safety alerts: Potential closure on busy days due to high visitation

Somersby Falls picnic area is a small picnic area with narrow walkways and can be extremely busy over the summer holiday period.

To ensure compliance with the current COVID-19 Public Health Order and reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission, please:

  • Ensure outdoor gatherings are restricted to 30 people
  • Maintain 1.5m physical distance from others
  • Avoid visiting during peak periods between 11am and 2pm
  • Consider visiting the nearby and much larger Girrakool picnic area less than 5 minutes away which also has waterfalls, walking tracks and a well-established picnic area.

Roadworks will take place on Marramarra Ridge and Smugglers Ridge trails from Wednesday 27 January to Friday 26 February 2020 between 7am and 6pm, Monday to Saturday. There will be increased heavy vehicle traffic along with heavy plant operations.

The trails will be closed while works are underway, with the exception of access for visitors booked in to stay at Marramarra Creek campgrounds. If you have a campground booking during this period, contact the local NPWS office on 02 8448 0400 for access.

If you plan to walk on these trails outside of working hours, please proceed with care and follow the directions of roadwork signs. For more information, contact the local NPWS office.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service will be conducting a baiting program in Garigal National Park between Saturday 1 August 2020 and Sunday 31 January 2021. The program involves the use of manufactured baits, fresh baits and Canid Pest Ejectors (CPEs) containing 1080 poison (sodium fluoroacetate) for the control of foxes. The operation is continuous and ongoing. Don’t touch baits or ejector devices.

All baiting locations are signposted.

Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW national parks and reserves. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Fox baiting in this reserve is aimed at reducing their impact on threatened species.

Closed areas: Update to visitor area closures

Many COVID-19 restrictions have now been lifted from visitor precincts and facilities. However, several tracks and trails will remain closed while upgrades and remediation works are completed. 

Please note the following updates:

  • Tunks Ridge campground remains closed until further notice while staff assess safety concerns 
  • Bookings for Twin Beaches South and North campgrounds are now available online.

Please remember to practice appropriate social distancing requirements and good hygiene. From Thursday 31 December 2020, the maximum group size for an outdoor gathering will be reduced to 30 people, including children. Groups are still expected to maintain social distancing. If you arrive at a national park or other public space and it is too crowded to practice social distancing, it is your responsibility to leave the area. The Marramarra Ridge public access road, from Bloodwood Road to the Marramarra Ridge trail gate, should be driven slowly and with care in 2WD vehicles. The road surface has become rough and potholed due to wear and tear, compounded by impacts from heavy rains in February 2020. Staged roadworks are scheduled to occur from December 2020 to June 2021.

Swimming is not advisable in Berowra Creek at certain times as the water may be subject to variable pollution levels and algal blooms. Please refer to the Hornsby Shire Council website before swimming in Berowra Creek. Alternatively you can call the Hornsby Council 24 hour information line on 9847 6666 or the Algal information line on 1800 999 457.

Swimming at Fishponds is not advised at any time due to heavy water pollution.

Safety alerts: Protect your picnic - native birds may steal your food

Birds at Nielsen Park are attempting to steal food from visitors' picnics and tables due to unauthorised feeding of local native birds. To try and reduce this unwanted behaviour, NPWS is asking visitors to not actively feed any wildlife and to please bring suitable methods to cover your food. These include storage containers with sealed lids or an umbrella to cover your picnic to reduce food visibility and access.

Please note, it is illegal to feed wildlife in a national park. NPWS officers are monitoring the area and fines apply if visitors are seen actively feeding birds and promoting this unwanted behaviour.

Some parts of North Head in Sydney Harbour National Park are closed due to fire damage. The closed areas include:

  • North Head Scenic Drive, after the carparks opposite Bella Vista Cafe and before the North Head Scenic Drive loop road.
  • Bluefish Drive past the Gunner Road Car Park entrance
  • Fairfax walk and lookout
  • All tracks and trails south of Bluefish Drive and along North Head Scenic Drive past the Q Station roundabout.

Open areas include:

  • Q Station
  • The track between Shelly Beach and Bluefish Drive
  • North Head Scenic Drive until just beyond the Bella Vista Cafe
  • Collins Flat Beach
  • Collins Beach Road

Safety alerts: Ironbark Road access to picnic area - Last 850m 4WD only

The last 850m along Ironbark Road (Crown Road) to access Ironbark picnic area is currently limited to 4WD vehicles only. This section is not suitable to conventional 2WD vehicles due to a severely eroded hill along the Crown Road. Visitors to this section of the park travelling by conventional 2WD vehicles will have to walk the last 850 metres to access to the start of the park and Ironbark picnic area.

A section of Flat Rock track - from the Killarney Drive entrance to the Downpatrick Street entrance - is currently closed until further notice due to track safety issues where the track passes through private property near Killarney Point:

  • Walkers heading west should exit Flat Rock track at the eastern end of Killarney Drive and use Killarney Drive until you reach Downpatrick Street. Then walk down the street and re-enter Flat Rock track from the Downpatrick Street fire trail.
  • Walkers heading east should exit Flat Rock track at the Downpatrick Street fire trail and use Downpatrick Street, then Killarney Drive until you reach the end of Killarney Drive. Re-enter Flat Rock track from the Killarney Drive entrance.

The program is continuous and ongoing between Saturday 1 August 2020 and Sunday 31 January 2021 in Sydney Harbour National Park.

The affected areas are:

  • Dobroyd, Bradleys, Georges, Middle and North Headlands (North Head includes adjoining land of Sydney Harbour Federation Trust, Australian Institute of Police Management, and Quarantine Station)

  • in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park in the Sydney and surrounds region
  • Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park is open sunrise to sunset but may have to close at times due to poor weather or fire danger.

    • The entrance to Bobbin Head and Appletree Bay is closed from 8pm to 6am during daylight savings periods, and from 5.30pm to 6am the rest of the year.
    • Gates to West Head are closed from 8.30pm to 6am during daylight savings periods, and from 6pm to 6am the rest of the year.
  • Park entry fees:

    $12 per vehicle per day.

    Vehicles over 8 seats: $4.40 per adult, $2.20 per child (per day). Students on educational programs: $1.10 per student. Teachers/educational supervisors: free (1 adult per 10 students).

    Other fees:

    A $3 per adult, $2 per child landing fee may apply for day visitors to The Basin campground. Please pay at the campground wharf. Landing fees are included in your camping fees.
