Safety alerts: Changes to Peacock Creek campground vehicle access

Peacock Creek campground is best accessed via Peacock Creek Road or Sextonville Road. Road condition issues on Iron Pot Creek Road and ongoing road works on Cambridge Plateau Forest Drive have impacted some access routes to this campground.

Please note:

  • Don't use Iron Pot Creek Road to access Richmond Range National Park. It's high-clearance 4WD access only, due to severe road surface damage and gullying.
  • Cambridge Plateau Forest Drive remains closed until October 2021. This includes Cambridge Plateau picnic area and associated walking tracks.
  • Peacock Creek Road is not recommended for low 2WD vehicles or vehicles towing heavy trailers/caravans following prolonged rainfall or during wet periods. Creek crossings may become impassable without high clearance.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will be conducting a strategic aerial and ground baiting program for the control of wild dogs and foxes.

The operation will involve the use of fresh meat containing Poison 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate). The program will be continuous and ongoing from Monday 23 August 2021 to Friday 19 November 2021 in the following reserves:

  • Barool NP
  • Bolivia Hill NR
  • Cathedral Rock NP
  • Capoompeta NP
  • Gibraltar Range NP
  • Guy Fawkes River NP
  • Kwiambal NP CCAZ (Arthurs Seat)
  • Nymboida NP
  • Severn River NR
  • Washpool NP

This program has been designed to meet NPWS priority conservation and state-focused biosecurity issues.

All baiting locations will be signposted.

Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW national parks and reserves. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting locations. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Bandahngan Aboriginal Area is closed until Wednesday 1 September 2021. The closure is to allow for a major upgrade of facilities and safety works to be completed.

Safety alerts: Limited access through Iron Pot Creek Road

Sections of Iron Pot Creek Road through Richmond Range State Forest are in very poor condition and impassable without a high-clearance 4WD vehicle. There is no through access to Toonumbar National Park from Richmond Range National Park via Iron Pot Creek Road. Therefore:

  • To access Peacock Creek campground, 2WD vehicles must use Sextonville Road. High-clearance 4WDs can also use Peacock Creek Road. There is no access via Cambridge Plateau Forest Drive as it remains closed until July 2021.
  • To access Iron Pot Creek campground use Murray Scrub Road via Kyogle only.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will be conducting a baiting program using red meat baits containing 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of Foxes and Wild Dogs.

Closed areas: Road closure

Some areas of this park are closed due to demolition of bridge from past flooding event. This closure applies until further notice. Closed areas include the 4WD access to North Washpool, an area also known as Washpool rest area, entering from Baryulgil onto Collum Collum Road. The bridge is washed away, at the junction of Washpool Creek and Collum Collum Road.

  • Washpool National Park’s 2WD entrance off Gwydir Highway onto Coachwood Drive and Washpool Forest Way is open.
  • Bellbird campground, Coombadjha campground and the Granites lookout and picnic areas are accessible.
