Closed areas: No access to Mt Babyl tower

Cambridge Plateau Forest Drive is partially closed from Thursday 20 January 2022 until further notice due to wet conditions. This closure will be reviewed on Thursday 27 January 2022 and may be extended.

There is no access to Mount Babyl tower during the closure. Telecommunications companies and other authorised tower users must contact the NPWS Kyogle area office to request access.

Closed areas: Cambridge Plateau Forest Drive partial closure

Cambridge Plateau Forest Drive is partially closed between Cambridge Plateau picnic area and Peacock Creek Road from Thursday 20 January 2022 until further notice due to wet conditions. This closure will be reviewed on Thursday 27 January and may be extended.

Please note:

  • Peacock Creek campground will remain open and can be accessed from the west via Peacock Creek Road or from the east via Sextonville Road
  • Cambridge Plateau picnic area and Cambridge loop walk will remain open and can be accessed from the south via the Bruxner Highway
  • Cambridge Valley track is closed for repairs until further notice
  • No access to Western Boundary Road is permitted during this closure.

Closed areas: Fire trails closed

The following fire trails are closed until further notice due to damage from recent wet weather:

  • Duck Creek
  • Butlermine, south of the intersection with the road to Butlers Tin Mine

Carpet Snake fire trail has reopened. However, due to trail conditions it is restricted to 4WD only, and drivers should be cautious due to rough terrain.

NPWS is monitoring the conditions and will re-open the trails as soon as possible.

Safety alerts: Degraded road conditions - 4WD only and horse float restrictions

Please be aware road conditions are degraded due to recent heavy rains and flooding. Access on all roads is limited to 4WD only, and is currently unsuitable for the towing of horse floats.

Spirabo Forest Way is especially degraded. It runs through Capoompeta National Park from Ten Mile Road in the south, and continues through the western side of Washpool National Park where it joins Scrub Road in the north. Please be cautious and drive to road conditions. Do not attempt to access the reserves while towing a horse float.

Safety alerts: Ugly Corner Falls track damage

Ugly Corner Falls walking track is damaged due to flooding. Surfaces may be uneven due to erosion.

Please follow all signage and don't enter areas that are fenced off. Due to recent rainfall creek levels can change rapidly. It is unsafe to swim or attempt to cross rivers that are flooded.

Closed areas: Road closure

Some areas of this park are closed until further notice due to the demolition of a bridge from a past flooding event.

The closed areas include the 4WD access to North Washpool, an area also known as Washpool rest area, entering from Baryulgil onto Collum Collum Road. The bridge is washed away at the junction of Washpool Creek and Collum Collum Road.

Please note:

  • Washpool National Park’s 2WD entrance off Gwydir Highway onto Coachwood Drive and Washpool Forest Way is open.
  • Bellbird campground, Coombadjha campground and the Granites lookout and picnic areas are accessible.

Closed areas: Roadworks and heavy equipment in park

Roads in this park will be closed to public access due to roadworks happening on Joes Box Road, South Yabbra Road, Yabbra Plains Road and Pocupar Road. Most of the works are happening on management trails that are not open to visitors, but other roads in this area will be affected by heavy equipment. The work includes vegetation management, grading and haulage. It is expected to be complete by early December 2021, weather dependant.

Bandahngan Aboriginal Area is closed to the public for a major upgrade of facilities and safety works and is expected to re-open in early 2022. A cultural heritage assessment and review of facilities for the reserve will also occur.
