Fire bans: Park Fire Ban

A park fire ban is in place in this park and remains in effect unless otherwise extended or removed. During park fire ban periods, all campfire and solid fuel (wood, heat beads, charcoal, briquettes, hexamine) barbecues and stoves are prohibited. Gas and electric barbecues and cookers are permitted as long as:

  • They're under direct control of an adult
  • The ground within 2m of the barbecue is cleared of all flammable materials
  • There's an adequate supply of water (minimum of a bucket)

If a Total Fire Ban is in place, different rules apply.

Closed areas: Parts of Blue Mountains National Park closed

Many walking tracks, roads and fire trails within Blue Mountains National Park remain closed following sustained wet weather causing subsidence hazards, major landslides or infrastructure upgrades. 

The following areas are closed:

Katoomba and Leura

  • Tarpeian Rock lookout is closed at the Prince Henry cliff walk junction from Monday 13 November 2023 for repair.
  • Underfalls track (side track off Furber Steps) closed for maintenance.
  • Honeymoon Bridge is closed due to rockfall risk.
  • Honeymoon Point lookout is closed due to upgrade works.
  • Lone Lyrebird track is closed between Gordon Road and the War Memorial, due to subsidence. Detour is in place.
  • Leura Cascades/Fern Bower circuit has a minor detour due to a landslide on Prince Henry Cliff walk. You must return via Leura Cascades track.
  • Leura Cascades picnic area is closed to vehicles. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information.
  • Prince Henry Cliff walk is closed between Gordon Falls picnic area and Elysian Rock lookout, due to a landslide. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information.
  • Prince Henry Cliff walk is closed between Olympian Rock lookout and Tarpeian Rock track, due to a landslide. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information.
  • Prince Henry Cliff Walk is closed from Carrington Park to Honeymoon Lookout due to hazardous tree and minor landslide.
  • Glenraphael Drive is closed due to major subsidence. No vehicle access to Golden Stairs.  Pedestrian access available from Narrowneck Lookout walking track.  
  • Narrowneck Fire Trail is closed to all walkers and cyclists from Monday 20th November until Friday 11th December to allow for road repairs. Closure periods each week are from Monday 0600hrs to Friday 1800hrs .  Access is available to walkers and cyclists during weekends.  
  • Kedumba River Crossing campground will be closed from Monday 4th December 2023 until Friday 1st March 2024 with no weekend access due to Kedumba Valley road repairs.
  • No access to the Mt Solitary walking track/ loop via Kedumba Valley Road during weekdays from Monday 4th December 2023 until Saturday 2nd March 2024.  Mt Solitary can be accessed from Katoomba (via Ruined Castle or Sublime Point Fire trail only).  
  • Kedumba Valley Road and Kedumba Pass are closed to the public from Monday 4th December 2023 until Friday 1st March 2024 to allow for road repairs. Pedestrian access is open during weekends. 
  • Part of Lindeman Pass is closed due to a major landslide below Gladstone lookout. Roberts Pass is closed due to rockfall and landslide hazards.  

Wentworth Falls and Woodford 

  • Wentworth Falls picnic area carpark is closed for upgrade works until mid-December 2023 (weather permitting).
  • Valley of the Waters track is closed below Sylvia Falls. There is no access to Roberts Pass, Vera Falls, Hippocrene Falls or Wentworth Falls from Valley of the Waters.
  • Charles Darwin walk is temporarily closed due to flood damage. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information.
  • Part of National Pass (west of Wentworth Falls middle crossing) is closed due to major landslide. Grand Stairs are open but there is limited access to the mid falls area while flood repairs are undertaken.
  • Wentworth Pass and Slack Stairs are closed due to landslide.
  • The western side of Rocket Point loop is closed due to track repairs. (Access to Rocket Pt is available via the eastern side).
  • Ingar Road is closed where it traverses private property at the western end. You can walk in to Ingar campground via Andersons or Bedford Roads.

Blackheath, Mount Victoria and Bells Line of Road

  • Govetts Creek access routes including Horse track and Rodriguez Pass (Bridal Veil Falls) are closed due to rockfalls and landslides. Entry is not permitted due to serious risk of injury or death. Entry is not permitted into the Grose Valley from Govetts Leap, Evans lookout, Grand Canyon track, or south of Acacia Flat.
  • Anvil Rock access road and picnic area is closed for upgrades until Wednesday 20 December 2023 and from Monday 5 February to Friday 23 February 2024.
  • Perrys Lookdown campground is closed.
  • Perrys Lookdown access road and picnic area will be closed for upgrades from Monday 9 October until Wednesday 20 December 2023, and from Monday 5 February to Friday 23 February 2024. There is no access into the Grose Valley (Acacia Flat and Blue Gum Forest) from Perrys Lookdown during this period. Access into the Grose Valley is via Victoria Falls, Pierces Pass or Lockleys Pylon. There is no access to Perrys Lookdown from these locations during this period.
  • Pulpit Rock Reserve, lookouts and walking track are closed. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information. Pulpit Rock walking track from Popes Glen is open as far as the NPWS boundary (as shown on Google maps).
  • Walls Cave track is closed from 18 October to mid-December 2023 for track maintenance.

Canyons and rock climbing

Climbing and canyoning areas in the Blue Mountains are open unless the access road is closed, or the site is listed in this alert.

Other planned events: Toilet blocks closed for upgrade works

Three toilet blocks in Georges River National Park will be closed for upgrades from Monday 14 August to early December 2023. Temporary toilets will be available during the construction period.

Picnic areas will remain open during the works.

Closed areas: The Coast track partial closure

Walking the full length of The Coast track from Otford to Bundeena or Bundeena to Otford is not currently possible, due to several track closures along its length. These closures are necessary due to repairs from rockfall, erosion and ongoing track upgrade works.

The closed areas are:

  • Palm Jungle Loop track between Burning Palms and Werrong lookout is closed from Tuesday 16 January 2023 to Sunday 30 June 2024 for track upgrades.
  • The Garie to Little Garie section of the track is closed due to hazardous rockfalls and erosion.
  • North Era campground is closed until further notice.
  • Garie Road, Garie Beach and the Garie precinct is closed until further notice. This is due to damage and subsidence to the road surface. Walkers approaching from the north (e.g. from Wattamolla or Bundeena) should exist the track via Curra Moors track.

Bushwalker access is available for the following sections of The Coast track:

  • South bound access- Bundeena to Curra Moors track via Wattamolla and return only. No access to Garie Beach.
  • North bound access - Available via North Era and return only. Access is via Garawarra Farm Ridge trail and Burgh Ridge Track during track upgrades
  • Figure 8 Pools access via Garawarra Ridge trail and Burgh Ridge track via Garawarra Farm only.

Other planned events: Aquatic weed treatments in Hacking River

The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service will be conducting a weed spraying operation at Audley, along the Hacking River, above Audley Weir.

The program will take place from Monday 23 October 2023 to Tuesday 30 April 2024, and involve the use of the herbicide metsulfuron-methyl, which treats senegal tea (a class 1 aquatic weed), and clipper tablets (active ingredient flumioxazin) to treat yellow water poppy.

Signs will be displayed during times of herbicide application.

Closed areas: Areas closed for deer control program

Some areas in Royal National Park are closed to the public between sunset and sunrise from Monday 29 May 2023 to Friday 29 December 2023 to enable a deer control operation to be carried out.

The affected areas include:

  • All picnic areas in the Audley Precinct
  • Asset protection zones adjacent to Maianbar, Bundeena and East Heathcote.
  • Wattamolla and Garie picnic areas
  • North Era campground and coastal areas between Garie Beach and Figure 8 Pools
  • Garrawarra Farm
  • Lady Carrington Drive
  • Bonnie Vale campground and picnic area.

These closures will be signposted at the entry points to the closed areas. If you have approved bookings to camp you can still access campsites during these times.

Bents Basin SCA and Gulguer Nature Reserve are closed Monday- Thursday due to pest animal control shooting operations.

Shooting operations will occur on select nights throughout this period, excluding weekends and public holidays. The operations will run from sunset to sunrise, where the park will be closed for public access.

From Sunday the 8th of October Bents Basin SCA will only be open over the weekend while flood repairs continue throughout the week.
The park will be open from 2pm to 8pm Fridays and 8am to 8pm Saturdays & Sundays for day use & camping. Camping Booking is essential. Park is closed from Sundays at 8pm until Fridays at 2pm. 

Use Wolstenholme Avenue (Greendale) gate for access to Bents Basin SCA campground, picnic area and for Gulguer Nature Reserve.

Bents Basin Road Picnic Area and Bents Basin Road (Silverdale) gate remains CLOSED; access closed to pedestrian & vehicular traffic; NO ENTRY. Caley Lookout CLOSED.

Safety alerts: Werrong Beach access track damaged

The Werrong Beach access track has been severely eroded at the beach access point. There are steep and uneven surfaces.

The track is recommended only for very experienced bushwalkers with specialised skills, including navigation and emergency first aid. Tracks are likely to be very rough, steep and unmarked. Walks may be more than 20km.

Closed areas: Lake Toolooma Fire Trail Closed due to sink hole

Lake Toolooma Fire Trail is closed to Pedestrians and Vehicles North of Tooloma Dam due to a large sink hole.

Visitors are reminded not to continue walking past Tooloma dam. 

The section of the track will reopen when it is safe to do so. Penalties apply for non-compliance.
