Due to the declaration of a Total Fire Ban in the Greater Sydney, remote camping sites, walking tracks and vehicle trails in Royal National Park are closed to public access commencing at midnight on 4 September for a 24 hour period.
Affected areas include:
- The Royal Coast Track
- Garawarra Farm
- All single-track mountain bike trails
- Every walking track, fire trails and vehicle trail in Royal, Georges River, and Heathcote National Park
- Uloola Falls and Garie Campgrounds at in Royal National Park
- Kingfisher
Major visitor precincts (Wattamolla, Bonnie Vale, Garie and Audley, Morgans Creek and Fitzpatrick Park ) in Royal and Georges River National Parks are open to visitors, as are major public roads though Royal National Park. The Audley Cafe is open.

Closed areas: Road and fire trail closures for vegetation maintenance works
NPWS contractors will be doing essential vegetation maintenance works along Royal National Park roads and fire trails from Monday 24 August to Friday 2 October 2026.
Works on roads will take place at night to minimise daytime traffic and access impacts. Fire trail works will take place during the day, with closures in place.
Works will be underway at the following locations and times:
- Warumbul and Rathane Roads: night works from 24 August to 11 September 2026.
- Gundamian Vehicle Trail: closed for maintenance on weekdays from 24 August to 18 September 2026.
- Winifred Falls Vehicle Trail: closed for maintenance on weekdays from 2 September to 2 October 2026.
Visitors staying at Weemalah or Hill Top cottages will still be able to access these locations with proof of booking.
Warumbul picnic area will remain open during daylight hours.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service will be conducting an aerial baiting program using dried meat baits containing 1080 poison (sodium fluroacetate) for the control of foxes. The program will occur from Wednesday 02 September to Sunday 06 September 2026 in Royal National Park.
All baiting locations are identifiable by signs. Please don’t touch baits.
Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW national parks and reserves. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.
Fox baiting in this reserve is aimed at improving the eco-health of the reserve by reducing predation of ground dwelling mammals and small birds, and specifically targeting fox control along the Hacking River to assist the successful re-introduction of platypus into Royal National Park.

Closed areas: Closure of Unauthorised Trail — East Heathcote to Waterfall
An unauthorised trail located between East Heathcote and Waterfall has now been formally and physically closed. Closure works have been completed, including signage and brush matting of the trail surface to encourage natural bush regeneration and clearly signal that the trail is no longer open to access. Access to this trail (located directly adjacent to the Eastern side of the rail corridor between East Heathcote and Waterfall) is not permitted. Please obey all closure signage. Penalties apply for non-compliance.

Safety alerts: Areas Closed - Deer Control Program
Some areas in Royal National Park, Heathcote National Park and Garawarra State Conservation Area are closed to the public between sunset and sunrise from Monday to Thursday (excluding school holidays) from Monday 6 July 2026 to Friday 18 December 2026 to enable deer control operations to be carried out.
The closed areas include:
- Trails and all Picnic Flats in the Audley Precinct
- Asset protection zones adjacent to Maianbar, Bundeena and East Heathcote
- Wattamolla and Garie picnic areas
- North Era campground and coastal areas between Garie Beach and Figure 8 Pools
- Garawarra Farm
- Lady Carrington Drive
- Bonnie Vale campground and Bonnie Vale picnic area.
- Hacking River Vehicle Trail
- Camp Gully Vehicle Trail
- Karingal Picnic Area
- Powerline East Vehicle Trail
These closures will be signposted at the entry points to the closed areas. If you have a campground booking you can still access campgrounds during these times.

Safety alerts: Access to Wattamolla Beach
The pontoon at Wattamolla has been removed for maintenance. Access to the beach is available via stairs at the eastern end of the precinct. Please be aware you will need to cross through water, and conditions will change with the tide. Take care and plan ahead.

Closed areas: All trails closed: The Kembla MTB trails are closed due to strong winds
The Kembla mountain bike trails are temporarily closed due to strong winds, which pose a safety risk from falling branches and trees.
Wind gusts have exceeded safety thresholds in the Trigger Action Response Plan for the trails.
Visitor safety is a priority for NPWS, and the closures are a standard safety practice.
We will continue to monitor conditions and will reopen the trails when conditions improve. Please check nswparks.info/illawarra-mtn-bike or Trailforks before visiting, and follow all park signs.
Thank you for continuing to ride responsibly on the trails.
For safety and to protect the trails, the Kembla mountain bike trails may be closed at short notice in wet and windy conditions, for maintenance or park operations.

Safety alerts: 10B and 10C Fire Trails - Increased Truck Movements
The 10B and 10C Fire Trails in Dharawal National Park, between Appin Rd and the former North Cliff Colliery will see increased truck movements from September 2026 for approximately 12 months. This is to support the rehabilitation of the former colliery by the current leaseholder GM3. Please take care on these shared trails and give way to trucks. Bare Island will be closed from 24 August 2026 and is expected to remain closed until late 2027 while major repairs are undertaken on the timber bridge.
During construction, the precinct, including the access road, bridge, rock shelf and Bare Island Fort, will be closed to visitors. Fencing will be in place and construction crews will be working on-site. Please follow all on-site signage and directions.

Other planned events: Upgrade works near the whales sculpture at Commemoration Flat
National Parks and Wildlife Service is undertaking construction of a new DDA-compliant boardwalk lookout platform to improve visitor access to the whales sculpture at the foreshore. The project is currently underway and scheduled for completion in August 2026.
Once finished, the new structure will provide safer, more inclusive access for all visitors. For your own safety, please do not access the fenced area and always follow directions from contractors and NPWS staff.

Closed areas: End of Bradleys Head Wharf closed
Access restrictions are in place at Bradleys Head Wharf for public safety.
Engineering inspections have identified significant deterioration of the structure, including movement and deterioration of sandstone blockwork, voiding and scour beneath parts of the jetty.
NPWS has completed emergency stabilisation works to reduce the immediate risk of further deterioration or collapse. These works did not restore the wharf to a condition suitable for unrestricted public access.
Bradleys Head Wharf is a heritage structure. Assessment of the wharf requires consideration of:
- Public safety
- Heritage values
- Visitor access and use
- Environmental considerations
- Coastal and marine processes
- Long-term sustainability and maintenance requirements.

Skylight cave is permanently closed to visitors due to serious safety risks. The cave is midway down an unstable cliff, and the risk of falling off the cliff edge while trying to reach it makes it very dangerous.

Kurnell Visitor Centre is currently closed and will remain closed until late 2026. A new visitor centre is under construction.

Unauthorised mountain bike trails in the Illawarra Escarpment State Conservation Area are being closed and rehabilitated in stages, in line with the Illawarra Escarpment Mountain Bike Strategy.
From June 2026, unauthorised trails near Mount Keira will be progressively closed and rehabilitated.
Closed trails will be signposted and may be physically blocked with barriers to support safe rehabilitation.
Please do not enter closed or restricted areas. Riders are reminded to use only approved, open trails. Penalties apply for non-compliance.
The Illawarra Escarpment Mountain Bike Strategy is being delivered by the National Parks and Wildlife Service and includes the 70-kilometre Illawarra Escarpment Mountain Bike Network, providing a safer and more sustainable alternative to unauthorised trails. The 20-kilometre Kembla mountain bike trails opened in 2025, with a further 50 km proposed for delivery in 2027.
Unauthorised trails that are not being formalised as part of the approved network are being progressively closed and rehabilitated as the network is delivered. This work protects environmental and cultural values and improves visitor safety.

Safety alerts: Hazardous track conditions - Wodi Wodi Walking Track
Recent heavy rain has created hazardous track conditions on the Wodi Wodi Walking Track between the Forest Walk and Stanwell Park Train Station. The track is currently experiencing erosion, fallen trees and landslips. It is not suitable for most walkers.
Please consider alternative walking tracks in the area.

A landslip occurred on an auxillary trail (near Dingo tunnel) off Lower pipeline fire trail in April 2024. Pedestrians and Cyclists are not permitted to pass the landslip.
Authorised Vehicles are not permitted to drive the auxillary trial until further notice.
There are no walking tracks or visitors facilities in this area.
