Closed areas: Changes to Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park precinct closures

Many high visitation areas and facilities within Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park will be open from Friday 15 May 2020.

Some areas will remain closed until further notice to protect the health and safety of our visitors and staff, including:

  • Bobbin Head Information Centre and Kalkari Discovery Centre
  • The Station and Pavillion picnic shelters 
  • Bobbin Head playground 
  • Brooklyn Dam campsites 
  • The Basin track and The Basin campground and picnic area closed for maintenance until late July 2020

Berowra track, between Apple Tree Bay and the intersection of Mount Ku-ring-gai track, has now reopened. However visitors are advised to walk with caution as some sections of the track remain uneven. 

The closure of toilets and other facilities will be decided on a case-by-case basis. Necessary site assessments will take place to consider the management of health and safety risk to visitors and staff, and available resourcing to maintain facilities. Access to sanitation products and running water cannot be guaranteed. We recommend bringing hand soap, hand wipes and toilet paper with you to maintain good hygiene as advised by the NSW Government.

Please remember to practice appropriate social distancing requirements and good hygiene. The maximum group size for an outdoor gathering is 10 people. Groups are still expected to maintain social distancing. If you arrive at a national park or other public space and it is too crowded to practice social distancing, it is your responsibility to leave the area. Do not wait to be instructed by NPWS staff or police.

Camping, including caravans and motor-homes, is not permitted in national parks from Friday 27 March 2020 until further notice to protect the health and safety of our visitors and staff. 

NPWS is working to reopen all campgrounds and accommodations where possible, however, some locations need to remain closed to ensure compliance with the current rules on public gatherings 

If you would like to stay at a reopened campground or cabin after 1 June you’ll need to revisit this webpage and make a booking. From 1 June, all reopened campgrounds and campsites will require a booking to be made before you visit.

Some high visitation areas and remote campgrounds in Berowra Valley National Park and Marramarra National Park are closed until further notice to protect the health and safety of our visitors and staff. 

The closed areas include:

  • Tunks Ridge rest area
  • Gentlemans Halt campground
  • Marramarra Creek campground
  • Twin Beaches campground 
  • Barnetts playground on Barnetts Road, Berowra Heights also remains closed until further notice for repair works. 

Canoelands Ridge trail within Marramarra National Park may be temporarily restricted from Thursday 21 May 2020 until further notice due to track remediation work. The walking track between the end of Canoelands Ridge trail and Gentlemans Halt campground remains closed until further notice while staff assess safety concerns. 

The Twin Beaches toilet block remains closed until further notice while upgrade works are conducted.

Barnetts playground on Barnetts Road, Berowra Heights remains closed until further notice. Repairs are currently being undertaken to ensure the playground is compliant with current playground safety standards.

Many high visitation areas and facilities in Lane Cove National Park will be open from Friday 15 May 2020. Some areas will remain closed until further notice to protect the health and safety of our visitors and staff.

These closed areas and facilities include:

  • Large shelter sheds at Tunks Hill (Area 22), Commandment Rock, Haynes Flat and Casuarina Point
  • Haynes Flat toilets

Riverside walk will remain closed until further notice while staff work to fix extensive flood damage, erosion and unsafe conditions.

Lane Cove Holiday Park is unable to accommodate any camping, including caravans, motor-homes or cabin accommodation. If you have enquiries or wish to make a future booking, call the Lane Cove Holiday Park on 02 9888 9133.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will be conducting an aerial and ground baiting programs using meat baits, meat bait products and ejectors containing 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of wild dogs and foxes.

The program will be continuous and ongoing from Tuesday 5 May to Wednesday 4 November 2020 in Capertee, Dharug, Goulburn River, Gardens of Stone, Wollemi and Yengo National Parks; Durridgere, Mugii Murum-ban, Parr, Yango and Wollemi State Conservation Areas; Avisford, Manobalai and Munghorn Gap Nature Reserves; and Appletree Aboriginal Area.

All baiting locations will be identifiable by signs.

Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW national parks and reserves. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting locations. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

The Marramarra Ridge public access road, from Bloodwood Road to the Marramarra Ridge trail gate, should be driven slowly and with care in 2WD vehicles. The road surface has become rough and potholed due to wear and tear, compounded by impacts from heavy rains in February 2020. Roadworks are scheduled to occur prior to July 2020.

Safety alerts: Swimming safety in Berowra Valley National Park

Swimming is not advisable in Berowra Creek at certain times as the water may be subject to variable pollution levels and algal blooms. Please refer to the Hornsby Shire Council website before swimming in Berowra Creek.

Swimming at Fishponds is not advised at any time due to heavy water pollution.

Safety alerts: Lower steps on Shark Island Wharf closed

The lower 4 steps of Shark Island Wharf are closed due to a safety hazard. Using these steps for berthing, drop-off and pick-up is prohibited. Access is only possible using the upper stairs.

Small vessels and boats may not be able to berth, particularly at low tide.

Closed areas: Flat Rock track - partial closure

A section of Flat Rock track - from the Killarney Drive entrance to the Downpatrick Street entrance - is currently closed until further notice due to track safety issues where the track passes through private property near Killarney Point:

  • Walkers heading west should exit Flat Rock track at the eastern end of Killarney Drive and use Killarney Drive until you reach Downpatrick Street. Then walk down the street and re-enter Flat Rock track from the Downpatrick Street fire trail.
  • Walkers heading east should exit Flat Rock track at the Downpatrick Street fire trail and use Downpatrick Street, then Killarney Drive until you reach the end of Killarney Drive. Re-enter Flat Rock track from the Killarney Drive entrance.

Park info

  • in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park in the Sydney and surrounds region
  • Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park is open sunrise to sunset but may have to close at times due to poor weather or fire danger.

    • The entrance to Bobbin Head and Appletree Bay is closed from 8pm to 6am during daylight savings periods, and from 5.30pm to 6am the rest of the year.
    • Gates to West Head are closed from 8.30pm to 6am during daylight savings periods, and from 6pm to 6am the rest of the year.
  • Park entry fees:

    $12 per vehicle per day.

    Vehicles over 8 seats: $4.40 per adult, $2.20 per child (per day). Students on educational programs: $1.10 per student. Teachers/educational supervisors: free (1 adult per 10 students).

    Other fees:

    A $3 per adult, $2 per child landing fee may apply for day visitors to The Basin campground. Please pay at the campground wharf. Landing fees are included in your camping fees.
