Closed areas: Malabar Headland National Park (western section) closed for hazard reduction burn

The western section of Malabar Headland National Park, including Western Escarpment Track, is closed from Monday 8 March 2021 for a hazard reduction burn (weather permitting).

The planned hazard reduction burn will be undertaken by NPWS and Fire & Rescue NSW.

Please note:

  • The hazard reduction burn is approx. 6ha within the western precinct of Malabar Headland National Park
  • Ignition will take 1 day, mop up 2 to 3 days
  • This is a strategic hazard reduction burn which will help protect the park and limit the potential spread of wildfire to surrounding private properties
  • All walking tracks in the western section of Malabar Headland National Park will be closed during the activity. They will remain closed until it is safe to reopen them.
  • Drivers are advised to take care on nearby roads if there is reduced visibility due to smoke.
  • The suburbs of Malabar and La Perouse may be effected by smoke
  • We thank our neighbours for their understanding
  • These burns are some of the many hazard reduction operations undertaken by NPWS across NSW each year, many with the assistance of the NSW Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue NSW
  • This hazard reduction burn is part of the NSW Government’s $76 million package over 6 years to boost bushfire preparedness and double hazard reduction in NSW national parks, where conditions allow.

Closed areas: Bonnie Vale coastal repairs

Coastal repairs will be carried out to the western section of the Bonnie Vale picnic area (near the campground entrance) to stabilise scouring. The track between Maianbar and Bonnie Vale through the campground is open to pedestrians. We ask that visitors stay on the track and keep clear from the fenced work site.

Closed areas: Audley boatshed - conservation and repair works

The Audley Boatshed will be undergoing important conservation and repair works. Boat hire is suspended and the boatshed, its slipway and a part of the carpark to the west will be closed during this period. Allambie Flat picnic area and carpark remains open. The following parks are all alcohol free zones from Thursday1 October 2020 to Thursday 1 April 2021:

Closed areas: Malabar Headland Anzac Rifle Range

1. For public safety, the eastern section of Malabar Headland National Park is closed during ANZAC Rifle Range operations.

These closures may occur with little or no notice.

2. When is the eastern section of the park closed?

  • Every Saturday from 7.30am
  • Every 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month
  • Monday 11 January through to Sunday 17 January 2021 
  • Saturday 23 January to Monday 25 January 2021

Please note: 

  • ANZAC Rifle Range is booked for shooting from Monday 11 January to Sunday 17 January 2021.
  • Normal Club shooting day Saturday 16 January 2021
  • The 2020 Queens Championships are scheduled to be held from Saturday 23 January to Monday 25 January 2021.

3. Do not enter the eastern section of the park (including Boora Point walking track) when:

  • Red flags are flying above the range
  • There are warning signs at the park's entry points (South Maroubra Beach and Fishermans Road carpark).
  • Park entry gates are closed

These closures apply to the eastern section of the park only (Boora Point walking track).

The western section of the park (Western Escarpment walking track) remains open.

The range operation schedule is provided by the NSW Rifle Association.

Closed areas: Kurnell exhibition and theatre areas closed

The exhibition area of Kamay Botany National Park Visitor Centre is closed to ensure COVID-19 safety is appropriately managed for visitors. This closure will be reviewed monthly. Please check the website for updated information. 

You can still access Kurnell Visitor Centre for information, retail purchases and park pass sales. Signage is in place around the closed areas inside the building.

Other planned events: Ferry wharf reinstatement

Transport for New South Wales are currently undertaking land-based investigations in support of the reinstatement of the ferry wharves at La Perouse and Kurnell within Kamay Botany Bay National Park.

Lower track in Wolli Creek Regional Park is temporarily closed while remediation is carried out on Lot 2.

Undercliffe track remains open through to Jackson track and Turrella Reserve.

Other planned events: 1080 pest management

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service will be conducting a baiting program using manufactured baits, fresh baits and Canid Pest Ejectors (CPEs) containing 1080 poison (sodium fluroacetate) for the control of foxes. The program will take place between Thursday 27 August 2020 and Wednesday 31 March 2021 in Towra Point Nature Reserve.

Don’t touch baits or ejector devices. All baiting locations are identifiable by signs.

Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW national parks and reserves. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Fox baiting in these reserves is aimed at reducing their impact on threatened species.

Safety alerts: Audley precinct in wet weather

Access across the Audley Weir may be closed due to river flooding during times of wet weather. During wet weather, NPWS advise park visitors to visit Live Traffic NSW to ascertain the status of the Weir crossing before commencing their travel to the park. During times of closure, access to Bundeena, Maianbar residential areas, Royal National Park Visitor Centre, including the Audley Dance hall and cafe, is via McKell Ave Waterfall.

Park info

  • in the La Perouse area of Kamay Botany Bay National Park in the Sydney and surrounds region
  • 7am–8.30pm November to March. 

    7am–7.30pm April to October.

    La Perouse park entry gate closed to vehicles between 7pm and 5am all year.

    Areas may have to close at times due to poor weather or fire danger.

  • There are no park entry fees in La Perouse area but you'll need to pay to tour Bare Island. Park entry fees apply in the Kurnell area of Kamay Botany Bay National Park, only.
