Other planned events: Aerial spraying of bitou bush

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service is conducting an aerial herbicide spraying operation between Monday 11 May 2020 and Sunday 28 June 2020. For public safety, the areas being treated will be closed temporarily on the day they are sprayed. Advice on specific areas to be temporarily closed will be provided a week before spraying.

This spraying program is being carried out to control bitou bush on headlands and beaches in:

  • Booti Booti National Park
  • Saltwater National Park
  • Tomaree National Park
  • Myall Lakes National Park (including Broughton Island)
  • Khappinghat Nature Reserve
  • Stormpetrel Nature Reserve (completed)
  • Little Broughton Island Nature Reserve (completed)
  • Some adjoining Crown Lands

The program is expected to take 8 to 10 days to complete, dependant on weather conditions.

Spraying is planned in the following areas:

  • Friday 29 May to Sunday 31 May 2020 inclusive - no aerial spraying will be undertaken.
  • Monday 1 June 2020 to Wednesday 3 June 2020 inclusive - no aerial spraying is planned at this stage due to forecast unsuitable weather conditions.
  • Thursday 4 and Friday 5 June - Myall Lakes National Park including Yellow Rock, Sugarloaf Point, Lighthouse Beach, Treachery Headland, Treachery Beach and Yagon Headland, Yagon Beach, Big Gibber Headland and Mungo Beach. 
  • Saturday 6 June to Monday 8 June inclusive - no aerial spraying will be undertaken.

 

The herbicide used is Metsulfuron methyl 600WG. NPWS staff will be present during the helicopter spray operation. Please ensure you follow the advice on all warning signs and the directions given by NPWS staff.

Closed areas: Tapin Tops National Park bushfire impact

Walking tracks within the reserve (Potaroo Falls Rainforest circuit, Red Cedar walk and Rowleys Rock) are closed and will reopen once dangerous tree works are complete and tree assessments finalised.

Dingo Tops rest area is open now for day use although there are currently no toilet facilities. 

All public roads and trails are open through the reserve.

Closed areas: Khappinghat National Park and Nature Reserve bushfire damage

Most roads in this park have now reopened. Some fire management trails remain closed, including some used by cyclists on the old bar - Taree cycleway. 

Five Islands and Moor Creek walking tracks remain closed until dangerous tree works are complete, a pedestrian bridge is reinstalled (Five Islands) and tree risk assessment is completed.

Many infrastructure items, including signs and creek crossings, are yet to be reinstalled.

Aerial spot spraying of bitou bush using a drone will occur on the Big Hill escarpment around Big Hill Back Beach in Limeburners Creek National Park from Monday 8 June to Tuesday 30 June 2020. All walking trails in the area will be closed and signage will be erected on site during operations.

The spraying will use Roundup Biactive in accordance with the APVMA Permit 12363.

Aerial spot spraying of Groundsel Bush using a drone will occur in remote areas in along the south west boundary of Crowdy Bay National Park during the period of Wednesday 28 May to Wednesday 3 June 2020, using Roundup Biactive in accordance with APVMA Permit 12363.

Aerial spraying will occur in the following areas:

Monday 8 June 2020 to Tuesday 30 June 2020 - Diamond Head escarpment in Crowdy Bay National Park. All walking trails in the area will be closed and signage will be erected on site during operations.

Monday 8 June 2020 to Tuesday 30 June 2020 - Camden Head escarpment in Kattang Nature Reserve. All walking trails in the area will be closed and signage will be erected on site during operations.

Talawahl Nature Reserve remains closed. The following roads within Talawahl Nature Reserve have been made safe to travel on:

  • Coates Road
  • Breakneck Road
  • Blackbutt Road.
