Closed areas: Cape Byron walking track closed between Lighthouse and Wategos beach

The section of the Cape Byron walking track between Wategos Beach (east) and the Cape Byron Historic Lighthouse will be closed for maintenance work until August 2024.

Vehicle access around the Cape Byron State Conservation Reserve will not be affected. Vehicles can access the Pass and Palm Valley picnic area, Wategos Beach, and the Cape Byron Historic Lighthouse.

Visitors can safely walk to the Cape Byron Historic Lighthouse via:

  • Lee Lane to the Tallow Ridge Walking Track, or
  • Lighthouse Road down-road

Visitors may choose to walk along Clarkes Beach to access the Pass and the Palm Valley picnic area. The section of the walking track between the Palm Valley picnic area and Wategos Beach (west) remains open.

This closure is to improve accessibility and ensure visitor safety. For more information, please contact the local office. Penalties apply for non-compliance.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is conducting aerial and ground baiting programs. Aerial baiting is scheduled from 10/06/2024 to 17/06/2024. Ground baiting is scheduled from 10/06/2024 to 18/08/2024. The operation will use 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of Foxes and Wild Dogs.

The program is designed to minimise predator impacts on wildlife, especially threatened species, and to minimise impact of wild dogs on neighbouring stock.

Signs will be placed at the entry to the baiting location. Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW National Parks managed lands. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Other planned events: NPWS is planning to undertake works on the western end of rockwall area at Woody Head.

NPWS is planning to undertake emergency stabilisation works on the Woody Head Bay Beach and the adjacent rock wall from Monday 03 June to Friday 28th of June 2024. Works will involve seawall repair and beach nourishment. Rehabilitation works to Woody Head Bay will be ongoing once sand nourishment is complete. There will be no pedestrian access to Woody Bay Beach and the adjacent rockwall. All other areas in Woody Head will remain open for use, this includes the boat ramp. There will be traffic control on the Woody Head road during these time. Drive safely, slowly and follow all directions of NPWS staff, roadwork and closure area signs.


Works will involve seawall repair and beach nourishment. Seawall repair works will occur to the rockwall adjacent Woody Bay Beach to be made safe and stabilise the wall. Beach nourishment involves approximately 2,500 m³ of sand extracted and placed on Woody Bay Beach for initial beach nourishment and dune rebuilding.

 

There will be some noise associated with the works, but only between 7am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. There will be no works over weekends or over the Kings birthday long weekend including Monday 10 June 2024.

Closed areas: Sheepstation Creek campground toilet works

Construction work is being carried out within the Sheepstation Creek precinct to refurbish the toilet facilities. These works include the use of power tools and generators by contractors. It is expected all works within the campground will be complete by the 30th June 2024.

Byrrill Creek walking track is closed due to landslips and erosion following severe rainfall. 

An alternative walking track is now available. Visitors can access this 3km return track from behind the camp kitchen in Cutters Camp campground.

    • Cape Byron State Conservation Area is open all hours, but may have to close at times due to poor weather or fire danger.
    • Cape Byron Lighthouse lawn is open 8am to sunset.
    • The Maritime Museum in the former Lighthouse Keeper’s office at the base of the lighthouse is open 10am to 4pm daily.
    • Opening before 8am for events or disabled access can be arranged by prior notice – contact NPWS Byron Bay office during business hours 02 6639 8300.

    Cape Byron Lighthouse lawn and Information Centre: $10 per vehicle per hour/$4 per hour motorcycles. Maximum 1 hour per vehicle per calendar day, including all NPWS annual passholders.
