A 1080 ground baiting program (baits) for wild dogs will be undertaken from Tuesday 9 April until Friday 31 May 2019. The parks and reserves affected include:

  • Ballina Nature Reserve
  • Uralba Nature Reserve

  • Whian Whian State Conservation Area
  • Bungawalbin National Park
  • Bungawalbin Nature Reserve
  • Bungawalbin State Conservation Area

A reminder that 1080 is harmful to domestic pets. 1080 baiting signs will be placed at every entrance in or out of the reserves.

Safety alerts: Take care on access roads to Minyon Falls and Rummery Park

Local government roads leading to Minyon Falls and Rummery Park campgrounds are in poor condition. Minyon Falls Road hash deep ruts and sections of Nightcap Range Road have deep potholes. Drive slowly and carefully along these sections. We advise that these sections of road are not suitable for vehicles with very low clearance.

Closed areas: Cutters Hut closed - construction works

Cutters Hut, within Cutters Camp campground, is closed due to construction works. NPWS are currently upgrading Cutters Hut to create a new camp kitchen for visitors. This closure may be extended and any extension will be posted as soon as possible.

Closed areas: Woody Head area closed

The Woody Head area in Bundjalung National Park is closed from 4pm Sunday 26 May to 8.30am 30 May 2019. This is for construction, weed spraying and maintenance works. The closed areas are:

  • Woody Head campground
  • Woody Head office and amenities
  • Woody Head picnic area
  • Woody Head cabins and cottages
  • Forest and Swamp houses

There will be no public access during this closure. These areas will be closed unless the closure is otherwise extended or removed.

Safety alerts: Short delays on Tweed Scenic Drive - roadworks

There will be short delays on the Barkersvale end of Tweed Range Scenic Drive from Tuesday 14 May to Friday 31 May 2019. This is due to roadworks.

Please drive safely and be aware of road conditions, due to recent weather road may have deteriorated. Follow the directions of all road signs.

Cape Byron walking track, south of the lighthouse precinct, will be closed from Monday 13 May to Friday 24 June 2019. This is for maintenance works. Visitors can still access the lighthouse via Cape Byron walking track at Wategos Beach. This closure may be extended and any extension will be posted as soon as possible.

Safety alerts: New road conditions at Black Rocks campground - take care

There have been recent roadworks around Black Rocks campground. These roadworks include newly graded road and refreshment of existing speed bumps. Visitors are reminded to travel at the recommended signposted speed limit.

Some areas of Cape Byron State Conservation Area have been impacted by former Tropical Cyclone Oma. Areas have been reopened but please take care as hazards remain in:

Other planned events: Black Rocks campground - changed access from the Pacific Highway

Access to Black Rocks campground from the Pacific Highway via The Gap Road has changed.

The turnoff to The Gap Road has permanently closed as part of the Pacific Highway upgrade. Access to The Gap Road is now via Tuckombil Road, which runs parallel to the highway. 

The turnoff to Tuckombil Road is 2km south of the southern end of the town of Woodburn. Follow Tuckombil Road south for 1.8km, then turn left onto The Gap Road. Black Rocks campground is 20km south along The Gap Road. 

Please drive slowly along The Gap Road because it is unsealed.

Safety alerts: Ilmenite stockpile removal and site rehabilitation

Visitors to Black Rocks campground should expect to encounter large trucks on The Gap Road. This is part of a major project to remove a sand mining tailings stockpile from the park and restore the area to a natural ecosystem. Park visitors are asked to slow down and exercise caution while driving along The Gap Road. No works associated with this project will be undertaken on weekends, public holidays or NSW school holidays. The truck movements are expected to continue until June 2020. Attention for campers at Black Rocks regarding periodic aircraft noise over the campground. The Department of Defence has a training area within Bundjalung National Park north of Black Rocks campground. Aircraft may fly over the campground from time to time. Partial closure. No 4WD beach access from Black Rocks campground. Due to significant storm damage, the 4WD beach access at Black Rocks campground is closed. Vehicles may still drive along Ten Mile Beach north from the Shark Bay 4WD beach access, but cannot exit at Black Rocks.There are no other beach access points on Ten Mile Beach other than Shark Bay 4WD beach access. No 4WD access north of Black Rocks campground.
