Gloucester Tops Road is closed beyond the Gloucester River campground from Monday 27 June to Sunday 10 July 2022 for major road maintenance works.

This closure means there will be no visitor access to Gloucester Tops during this period. The original one-week closure has been extended due to predicted weather conditions and potential impacts on the recent works.

The following areas will remain open during this time:

  • Gloucester River campground and picnic area
  • the Sharpes Creek and Gloucester River walking tracks

Other incidents: Main access road to Barrington Tops Plateau closed from Gloucester

The main access road to Barrington Tops Plateau from Gloucester has been closed by NSW Forestry Corporation until further notice due to serious damage caused during a weather event.

You can only access campgrounds and visitor precincts located on the plateau from the western side via Scone. Barrington Tops Forest Road (also known as the Scone-Gloucester Road) is closed between Cobark Park picnic area and Dilgry Circle intersection. There is no access from Gloucester to Scone on this road.

Road re-opening dates are unknown at this stage, however NSW Forestry Corporation is working on restoring the road. This media release has more information.

Closed areas: Winter closure of 4WD trails

The following 4WD access trails are closed to vehicles from Monday 30 May 2022 due to the annual winter closure:

  • Barrington trail (south and central)
  • Paddys Ridge trail
  • Bullock Brush trail
  • Butchers Swamp trail
  • Thunderbolts trail (between Barrington Tops Forest Road and Pheasants Creek Road)
  • Tugalow trail

The following areas also closed to vehicles during this time:

  • Junction Pools, Little Murray and Gummi Falls campgrounds
  • Associated walking tracks, lookouts and facilities

You can still access all these campgrounds, walking tracks, lookouts and facilities on foot or by bicycle.

Burraga Swamp walking track is inaccessible by vehicle due to the closure of Mt Allyn Road in Chichester State Forest because of wet weather.

Safety alerts: Williams Top Road closed

Williams Top Road has been closed by Forestry Corporation of NSW (FCNSW) due to a landslip. The closure affects access to the following areas in this park:

  • Lagoon Pinch picnic area
  • Corker trail
  • Wombat Creek campground
  • Careys Peak (via Corker trail)
  • Rocky Crossing walk

For more information on the closure visit the FCNSW website. The road re-opening date is not known at this stage.

Alternate access via Chichester State Forest (Allyn River) may be available but is subject to regular flooding and varied road conditions.

Tubrabucca Road is closed until further notice between Barrington trail (central) and Paddys Ridge trail due to multiple bridge failures.

An engineer has assessed the bridges and deemed them unsafe to all traffic. NPWS are working towards replacing the bridges as soon as possible.

Closed areas: Phytophthora quarantine area - Barrington Tops National Park

Phytophthora is a mould that causes dieback in plants. It's been found on the plateau in Barrington Tops National Park, predominantly on the Watergauge trail between Beean Beean and Black Swamp. The affected area is under quarantine with absolutely no visitor access.

Phytophthora is readily spread by mud carried by walkers' shoes and mountain-bike tyres. There are boot wash stations across the plateau for walkers to use, to ensure their boots 'Start clean, Stay clean'.

Closed parks: Reserves closed due to severe weather event

A number of National Parks and Wildlife Service reserves will be closed to vehicles until further notice due to damage from severe weather event. These include:

  • Berrico National Reserve
  • The Glen National Reserve

Landslips, collapsed bridges and culverts and hazardous trees have been reported across many areas. For your safety, please avoid these reserves until damage assessments can be made and any safety issues rectified.

Part of the Blue Gum Loop trail is closed due to recent storm damage and dangerous trees. NPWS is working to clear the trail and reopen as soon as possible.

  • Williams River picnic area and part of Blue Gum Loop trail (including 250m accessible section to first steel bridge)
  • Rocky Crossing walk (access via Williams River picnic area due to Forestry Corporation closure of Williams Top Rd)
  • Jerusalem Creek trail and picnic area

Erosion and surface damages are present on walking tracks, road surfaces and managed areas across national parks of the Hastings Macleay Area following significant and prolonged rainfall events.
