Fire bans: Park fire ban - Tweed-Byron and Richmond River areas

A park fire ban is in place in this park and remains in effect unless otherwise extended or removed. During park fire ban periods, all campfire and solid fuel (wood, heat beads, charcoal, briquettes, hexamine) barbecues and stoves are prohibited. Gas and electric barbecues and cookers are permitted as long as:

  • They're under direct control of an adult
  • The ground within 2m of the barbecue is cleared of all flammable materials
  • There's an adequate supply of water (minimum of a bucket)

If a Total Fire Ban is in place, different rules apply. Contact the local park office before bringing a gas or electric barbecue or cooker.

Closed areas: Western area and roads closed due to bushfires and recovery

The western area and some roads and trails within this park are closed due to ongoing bushfire activity and bushfire recovery works.

The closed areas, roads and trails are west of Rummery Park campground and include the western shared trail network. The closed roads and trail network includes:

  • Peates Mountain Road 
  • Perlite Road
  • Eastern Fire Break
  • Blue Fig Road
  • Rummery Road
  • Gibbergunyah Road
  • Nixon Road
  • Tungun Road
  • Tuntable trail
  • Number One trail
  • North Rocks Road 

Historic Nightcap track remains closed from Rummery Park campground through to Mount Nardi and the Sphinx.

The areas, walking tracks and trails that remain open include:

  • Rummery Park campground
  • Boggy Creek walk
  • Minyon Falls picnic area
  • Minyon Falls loop
  • Minyon Grass picnic area
  • Telephone Road trailer carpark
  • All trails associated with the shared trail network east of Nightcap Range Road and Rummery Park campground, including Telephone Road, Boomerang Road, Quandong trail and Eastern Boundary trail.

Closed areas: Section of Cape Byron walking track closed

The Tallow Beach lookout to Tallow Ridge section of Cape Byron walking track is closed from Monday 25 November to Friday 20 December 2019. This is so the track can be upgraded.

Other planned events: Fox control program

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service will be doing 1080 ground baiting for foxes in Brunswick Nature Reserve (north). 

The baiting program will run from 29 October 2019 to 10 December 2019. It will reduce the impact of the European red fox on threatened species including beach stone curlew and pied oystercatcher. The fox control program is part of the NSW Saving our Species Program.

There will be 1080 warning signs at the authorised access points to the baiting location. Don't touch baits or ejector devices.

Domestic pets, including dogs, are not permitted in national parks or reserves. 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) baits are lethal to domestic dogs and cats. Please restrain pets and working dogs and ensure they do not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning, seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Other planned events: Shorebird protection program - 1080 fox and wild dog program underway

NSW National Parks will run a 1080 fox baiting program in this park from Monday 8 July to Friday 20 December 2019. Where wild dogs are detected during these programs, they will also be controlled. Signs will be located at entrances to reserves where baits have been laid.

Dogs are not permitted in national parks or nature reserves. Please be aware of these control programs and keep domestic pets to designated pet exercise areas. Avoid bait stations and/or ejectors at all times.

These programs are priority initiatives of the NSW Fox Threat Abatement Plan to protect breeding threatened shorebirds.

Closed areas: Take care on beaches in Cape Byron State Conservation Area

Some areas of Cape Byron State Conservation Area have been impacted by former Tropical Cyclone Oma. Areas have been reopened but please take care as hazards remain in:

  • Wategos Beach
  • Clarkes Beach
  • The Pass
