Closed areas: Gulf Bend near Tantangara Dam wall closed for helicopter weed control program

Gulf Bend, located off Pockets Saddle Road below Tantangara Dam wall, is closed from Sunday 4 January to Friday 23 January 2026 for a helicopter-based weed control program targeting Oxeye Daisy. There will be no access to the Murrumbidgee River at Gulf Bend during this time. 

The area may reopen earlier if program completed ahead of schedule.

Signs will be posted at the entrances to the closed area. Penalties apply for non-compliance.

Transport for NSW will be doing road works on the Yarrangobilly Caves Road from Tuesday 11 November 2025 to Friday 27 March 2026. The direction of travel into and out of the Yarrangobilly Caves precinct will be temporarily reversed to allow workers safe access to the worksite. Drive safely and follow directions of road work signs. Allow extra time to get to tours and accommodation during this time.

The following walking tracks will be closed in late January to early February 2026:

  • Clarkes Gorge walking track - closed from 7am, Tuesday 27 January. Re-opening at 5pm, Thursday 29 January 2026
  • Nichols Gorge walking track - closed from 7am, Thursday 29 January. Re-opening 5pm, Sunday 1 February 2026

This closure will not impact visitors using the facilities at Blue Waterholes campground.

Closed areas: Murray Valley NP - Millewa precinct - south of Tocumwal Road - Partial opening

From December 19th 2025 to January 4th 2026 access to some campgrounds along the Murray River will be permitted. Sites along Millewa River Road from Nine Panel campground/Regulator, west of Fisherman's Bend Road and upstream to Toupna Crossing Road intersection will be open to camping. Campgrounds upstream of this area will remain closed until 1st April 2026.

The available campgrounds include; Nine panel, Fisherman's Bend, Turtle, Kangaroo, Hooked Leaf Wattle, Cherry Tree, Potts Creek, Mary Ada and 1818.

Campgrounds north of the Tocumwal Road and within the Gulpa Island and Moira precincts, north and south will remain open. Please check the online Murray Valley campground booking site, Search camping and accommodation | NSW National s for available locations.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is conducting ongoing ground baiting programs in Kosciuszko National Park from Monday 8 December 2025 to Monday 8 June 2026.

The program will be conducted in the northern precinct of the park, which includes the following areas:

  • Goobarragandra
  • Blowering Foreshores
  • Big Talbingo/Buddong

The operation will use 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of foxes and wild dogs. The program is designed to minimise predator impacts on wildlife, especially threatened species, and to minimise impact of wild dogs on neighbouring stock.

Signs will be placed at the entry to the baiting location. Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW National Parks managed lands. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

The Guthega Track Head vehicle drop off area and turning circle is closed to vehicles for construction works from Monday 10 October 2025  to Friday 1 May 2026.

The program will be continuous and ongoing between 1 September 2025 and 28 February 2026, and will use meat baits and canid pest ejectors containing 1080 (sodium fluroacetate) poison for the control of wild dogs and foxes.

Some parts of Tantangara Reservoir will be closed intermittently due to Snowy 2.0 construction activities involving controlled blasts. Full exclusion zones will be established prior to and during blast operations. The areas affected are:

  • Tantangara Reservoir adjacent to the Snowy 2.0 construction site and Reservoir boat ramp, adjacent to the Tantangara Dam wall may have intermittent closures due to construction activities.

A number of sites in Kosciuszko National Park are closed or may have other restrictions until further notice.

Road Closures

Olsens Road BEYOND Geehi Dam. Olsens Road remains open from the Alpine Way to Geehi Dam.

Fire-affected areas

Some sections of Kosciuszko National Park which burnt during the 2019/2020 fires remain closed. These areas include:

  • Wolgal and Pattinson's Huts

Snowy 2.0 works affecting access to Tantangara Road and Tantangara Dam

  • Access to the southern end of Tantangara Reservoir via Quarry trail is closed to the public.
  • Access to the southern end boat ramp is open, but may be subject to short-term closures.
  • Current boating and camping access to Tantangara Reservoir will still be available at access points on the northern end of the reservoir, via Port Phillip and Dam trails.

There's an increase in heavy machinery and light vehicle movements on the Snowy Mountains Highway (between Cooma to Tumut) and Link and Tantangara Roads within Kosciuszko National Park, due to the Snowy 2.0 project.

You are likely to encounter heavy machinery and trucks when accessing Wares Yards campground. This will continue for a number of years and involves the use of specialised heavy vehicle combinations for transporting materials associated with the project.

There is a Substantial risk of unexploded ordinances (UXO) within Livingstone National Park.

There is signage erected at all entrances to the risk area.

If you are driving, bushwalking or mountain biking in the area, you must keep to the formed trails within the UXO risk area. No camping or digging of any kind is permitted within the risk area.
