Safety alerts: Safety risk of unexploded ordnances (UXO) in Livingstone National Park

You must keep to marked trails, walking tracks and roads when visiting Livingstone National Park.

This is because of the safety risk around unexploded ordinances (UXO) within the park. There are signs on the ground at all entrances to the risk area.

No camping or digging of any kind is permitted within the risk area.

The thermal pool track and car park will be closed to the public from 20 March to 31 March 2023.  The thermal pool will remain open.  Access to and from the thermal pool will be via the Riverwalk track. Closest parking is located at the South Glory car park.

The Mount Stilwell walking track will be partially closed between the Lookout and the summit of Mt Stilwell due to track upgrade works.  This closure will be in place between 13-31st March, 2023.  The section from the Trackhead to the Lookout (approximately 800m) will remain open during this period.

Murrumbidgee Valley National and Regional Park and Nature Reserve are closed from Monday 24 October 2022 to Friday 21st April 2023, due to widespread flooding.

Some precincts have been assessed as safe and reopened, these include;

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is conducting a ground baiting program in Kosciuszko National Park from 17th March 2023 to 31 March 2023.

 

The operation will use 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of foxes.  The program is designed to minimise predator impacts on wildlife, especially threatened species.

Signs will be placed at the entry to the baiting location. Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW National Parks managed lands. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Closed areas: Area closed for aerial pest control operation

The NPWS Cross Tenure Feral Deer Management Project will be conducting an aerial pest control operation between 6am, Tuesday 21st to 6pm Friday 31st March and 6am Monday 24th April to 6pm Friday 5th May 2023 (weekdays only and excluding public holidays).

This program will target feral deer and aims to significantly reduce the number of feral deer on park and adjacent consenting private land. Other pest animals, including pigs, goats, foxes and wild dogs will be targeted if observed during the operation.

This program will operate in the Moonbah/Ingebirah, Cascades and Big Boggy areas of Kosciuszko National Park.

Warning signs will be placed at relevant access points into areas of park. Please do not enter closed areas during this time. Penalties may apply.

Please note: The Cascades Trail will remain open to the public. Visitors must stay on the trail, there is a 500m buffer either side of the trail. There is no access to Teddy's Hut for the duration of the shoot program.

Tom Groggin Campground and Day Use Area will be partially closed from the 24th April to the 31st May 2023 in order to undertake significant campground maintenance works, including the formalisation of vehicle tracks within the campground and rehabilitation planting. 

Traffic controls may be in place for some parts of this work. The Alpine National National Park (Victoria) and Bicentennial National Trail will remain accessible via the Tom Groggin ford. 

Tom Groggin Horse Camp is not affected by the above works and will remain open.

Closed parks: Aerial Pest Control Operation

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service will be undertaking an aerial pest control operation in Ellerslie Nature Reserve.

The reserve will be closed from 8am Monday March 13th 2022 to 8pm Sunday March 26th 2023. If the program is completed sooner the reserve will re-open.

 

This program is part of a cooperative program with the Local Land Services and is to assist in the control of pest animals including pigs, deer and goats.

The operation could be postponed due to unfavourable weather or logistical problems.

Closed areas: Track Upgrade Closure , Albina Traverse Section of the Main Range Walk 13 March to 28 April 2023

The Albina Traverse section of the Main Range Walk will be closed from Monday 13th March until Friday 28th April 2023 whilst essential upgrades are undertaken to the existing track surface. Walkers are free to divert off track around the work site by travelling below the traverse via Lake Albina or along the Mount Northcote ridgeline above. However please be aware that when walking off track:

  • Walkers are advised to have map and compass or avoid walking off track in poor visibility conditions
  • Walkers should avoid following cairns, non-hardened footpads or walking single file and instead should spread out
  • Walkers should travel on more durable vegetation types such as grasses rather than heath or other sensitive vegetation

A number of sites in Kosciuszko National Park are closed or may have other restrictions until further notice.

Post-Winter closures due to wet weather trail conditions (closed until further notice)

The following roads are closed:

  • Geehi Dam / Olsens Road
  • Grassy Flat Trail

Detour due to construction works 

  • Kings Cross Road and Tumut Ponds Fire Trail - access only via Snow Ridge Road near Cabramurra. No access from Link Road through Selwyn Snow Resort.

Fire-affected areas

Some sections of Kosciuszko National Park which burnt during the 2019/2020 fires remain closed. These areas include:

  • Kiandra Court House
  • Wolgal Hut
  • Pattinson's Hut and Matthew's Cottage
  • Cabramurra township
  • Selwyn Snow Resort
  • Selwyn Snow Resort is being rebuilt following fire damage, and is currently a construction site. For your safety, public access to this area is strictly prohibited and all signage in this area must be followed.

Huts that burnt down in the 2020 fires. The location is open but there is no hut/building:

  • Bradley/O'Briens Hut, Brooks Hut, Delaneys Hut, 4 Mile Hut, Happy's Hut, Harveys Hut, Linesman's No.3 Huts, Round Mountain Hut, Vickeries Hut and Dry Dam Ski Shelter.
    • Warning: 
    • Please take care as there may be broken glass/nails that are uncovered since NPWS made records and cleaned up these sites. 
    • Please do not disturb the sites or remove artefacts.

Tantangara Road and Tantangara Dam access - Snowy 2.0 works:

  • Access to the southern end of Tantangara Reservoir via Quarry trail is closed to the public.
  • Access to the southern end boat ramp is open but may be subject to short-term closures.
  • Current boating and camping access to Tantangara Reservoir will still be available at access points on the northern end of the reservoir, via Port Phillip and Dam trails.

Valentines Hut in the Jagungal Wilderness area will be closed until the end of February 2023 for major maintenance works. During this time the hut will not be available for emergency shelter or use of any kind. The adjacent toilet will be useable for visitors camping near the hut or passing through the area.

Safety alerts: No heavy vehicles permitted on Guthega Road past Island Bend

Heavy vehicles are not permitted on Guthega Road past Island Bend. This is because subsidence in Guthega Road is causing safety issues for large, heavy vehicles.

All heavy vehicles, including large buses, must use the Link Road from Smiggin Holes to access Guthega Power station area or Guthega village.

The program will be continuous and ongoing between 9 February 2023 until 9 August 2023. These programs are part of an integrated pest animal control strategy, aimed at minimising the impacts of these animals on neighbouring stock.

Baiting programs will be conducted in Thredbo/Ingebyra, Dalgety/Paupong and Corrowong/Tombong/Merriangaah Wild Dog Plan Areas. This includes the following sections of Kosciuszko National Park;

  • Thredbo Valley

There is an increase in heavy and light vehicle movements on the Snowy Mountains Highway (between Cooma to Tumut) and Link and Tantangara Roads within Kosciuszko National Park. This traffic will continue for a number of years and involves the use of specialised heavy vehicle combinations for transporting materials associated with the Snowy 2.0 project and other projects in the region.

There will also be ongoing maintenance and upgrades to roads in the area as part of the project, particularly along Link and Tantangara Roads.

Fire bans: Solid Fuel Fire Ban begins in Riverina Area Reserves

A park fire ban is in place in this park and remains in effect unless otherwise extended or removed. During park fire ban periods, all campfire and solid fuel (wood, heat beads, charcoal, briquettes, hexamine) barbecues and stoves are prohibited. Gas and electric barbecues and cookers are permitted as long as:

  • They're under direct control of an adult

A baiting program using meat baits and canid pest ejectors containing 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison will be conducted from Tuesday 20 December 2022 until Tuesday 20 June 2023 in Kosciuszko National Park.

The program will be conducted in the northern precinct of the park, which includes the following areas:

  • Goobragandra
  • Blowering foreshores
  • Big Talbingo/Buddong

Entry into baiting locations will be identifiable by signs.

Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW national parks and reserves. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

The Old Mountain Road walking track is closed due to damage from the 2019-2020 bushfires. The walking track will remain closed until hazardous fire affected trees are removed.

Fire bans: Park fire ban - Yanga and Kyalite Reserves

A park fire ban is in place in Yanga National Park, Yanga State Conservation Area and Murray Valley Regional Park (Kyalite Reserves) and remains in effect unless otherwise extended or removed. During park fire ban periods, all campfire and solid fuel (wood, heat beads, charcoal, briquettes, hexamine) barbecues and stoves are prohibited. Gas and electric barbecues and cookers are permitted as long as:

  • They're under direct control of an adult
  • The ground within 2m of the barbecue is cleared of all flammable materials
  • There's an adequate supply of water (minimum of a bucket)

Closed areas: Tantangara Reservoir partial closure

Some parts of Tantangara Reservoir will be closed intermittently from Sunday 1 May 2022 until further notice, whilst the Snowy 2.0 construction activities involving controlled blasts are conducted. Full exclusion zones will be established prior to and during blast operations. The closed areas are:

  • Portions of Tantangara Reservoir, adjacent to the Snowy 2.0 construction site.
  • Tantangara Reservoir boat ramp, adjacent to the Tantangara Dam wall.
