Safety alerts: Rising river alert Upper Murrumbidgee River
Planned environmental flow releases from Tantangara Dam into the Murrumbidgee River will occur in June, July and October with several high flow events scheduled.
Please be aware waterways can rise quickly and without warning. Conditions in and along the river could be dangerous. Please stay away from areas where flows are high and banks may be unstable.
The Bicentennial National Trail and a number of other trails cross the river. Access may be impacted during high flows. Information on daily planned water releases can be found on the Snowy Hydro website.

Fire-affected areas
Some sections of Kosciuszko National Park which burnt during the 2019/2020 fires remain closed. These areas include:
- Selwyn Snow Resort
- Kiandra Court House
- Wolgal Hut
- Pattinson's Hut and Matthew's Cottage
- Cabramurra township
- Selwyn Snow Resort is being rebuilt following fire damage, and is currently a construction site. For your safety, public access to this area is strictly prohibited and all signage in this area must be followed.
Huts that burnt down in the 2020 fires. The location is open but there is no hut/building:
- Bradley/O'Briens Hut, Brooks Hut, Delaneys Hut, 4 Mile Hut, Happy's Hut, Harveys Hut, Linesman's No.3 Huts, Round Mountain Hut, Sawyers Hut, Vickeries Hut and Dry Dam Ski Shelter.
- Warning:
- Please take care as there may be broken glass/nails that are uncovered since NPWS made records and cleaned up site.
- Please do not disturb site or remove artefacts.
Tantangara Road and Tantangara Dam access - Snowy 2.0 works:
- Access to the southern end of Tantangara Reservoir via Quarry trail is closed to the public.
- Access to the southern end boat ramp is open but may be subject to short-term closures.
- Current boating and camping access to Tantangara Reservoir will still be available at access points on the northern end of the reservoir, via Port Phillip and Dam trails.

Closed areas: High altitude walks - Snow covered and hazardous winter conditions
Areas above 1600m in altitude in Kosciuszko National Park are typically snow covered in winter. Please note the following information when visiting these areas:
General:
Be prepared:
- Low visibility, extreme winds, heavy snowfalls can all occur without warning.
- Wear and carry appropriate clothing, carry navigation equipment and be prepared for extreme conditions.
- Track surfaces and signs may not be visible.
Travel with care:
- Choose your routes carefully
- Steep and icy terrain and thin snow/ice cover over rivers and lakes can make travel very dangerous.
Avalanche:
- There is a risk of avalanches in the higher areas of Kosciuszko National Park, particularly on Main Range and around Mount Kosciuszko.
- Steeper, treeless slopes and the tops of ridges where overhanging cornices develop carry the greatest risk.
- Snow stability varies with wind, temperature and the amount and patterns of snowfall.
- Avalanches can occur at any time through winter and can be fatal.
- Back country travellers should check snow and weather conditions before departure and remain alert.
Perisher/Main Range - areas above about 1600m, including: Kosciuszko walk, Guthega to Charlotte Pass walk, Main Range walk, Summit walk, Mt Stillwell walk, Snowgum boardwalk, Porcupine walk, Hanells Spur walk, Illawong walk, Schlink Hut walk and Dead Horse Gap track:
Expect continuous snow cover:
- Skis or snowshoes recommended. Ensure footwear is waterproof, solid and with good grip.
- Take a map and compass and know how to use them. All tracks are under snow and not visible. Most don't have above snow markers.
- Take extreme caution when on all steep slopes.
Sub-alpine - areas above 1500m - Rainbow Lake walk, Rennix walk, Thredbo River track:
Expect long stretches of snow cover with occasional continuous coverage:
- Ensure footwear is waterproof, solid and with good grip. It is recommended that you carry skis or snowshoes.
- Take a map and compass and know how to use them. Sections of tracks will not be obvious and most don't have above snow markers.
- Take extreme caution when on all steep slopes due to slippery surfaces.

Safety alerts: Wog Way temporary closure
Wog Way is closed from Kanoonah Road in the north through to the park boundary in the south. Above average rainfall in March and April has caused deterioration of the road surface with a section becoming very boggy and unsuitable for vehicles. Coolangubra Forest Way provides alternative access for park visitors travelling to Waratah Campground or Pheasants Peak from Imlay Road.

Due to forecast heavy rainfall the northern section of Mumbulla Creek Road is 4WD only from 500m south of Wyuna trail to Tee-ridge Road.
Mumbulla Creek Road has recently been graded and some sections of this road may become temporarily impassable to vehicles due to rain, thunderstorms and vehicle damage to the road surface.
Please avoid this area until the road dries out. This closure does not affect residents of Mumbulla Creek Road as they can access their property from Dr George Mountain Road.
Please note that Biamanga Cultural Area (Mumbulla Creek Falls) is closed. Please do not not drive on Mumbulla Creek Road in an attempt to access a closed area.

Light to Light walking track creek crossings at the northern and southern ends of Saltwater Creek Beach, and Bittangabee Bay are hazardous due to sea surge.
Remember, it’s never safe to walk through flood waters, so you’ll need to reschedule your visit and avoid travel through these areas in this park.

The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will be conducting a baiting program using baits containing 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of wild dogs and foxes. The program will be continuous and ongoing between 9 February 2022 until 8 February 2023. These programs are part of an integrated pest animal control strategy, aimed at minimising the impacts of these animals on neighbouring stock.
Baiting programs will be conducted in Thredbo/Ingebyra, Dalgety/Paupong and Corrowong/Tombong/Merriangaah Wild Dog Plan Areas. This includes the following sections of Kosciuszko National Park;
- Thredbo Valley
- Moonbah
- Ingebyra
- Paupong
- Numbla Vale
- Corrowong
Baiting programs will also be undertaken in Paupong, Merriangaah and Quidong Nature Reserves.
All baiting locations will be identifiable by signs.

This traffic will continue for a number of years and involves the use of specialised heavy vehicle combinations for transporting materials associated with the Snowy 2.0 project and other projects in the region.
