Closed areas: Samurai Beach campground closed due to severe weather

Samurai Beach campground in Tomaree National Park is temporarily closed from Wednesday 10 April 2024 until Monday 15 April 2024.

This closure is for visitor safety. Large swell and subsequent erosion has made access to the campground dangerous at high tide. NPWS staff will monitor conditions and reopen the campground when access is safe.

Samurai beachfront has reopened for 4WD access, but driving conditions remain variable due to changing swell, tides and weather conditions. Drivers are advised to exercise caution and check conditions before travel.

Please remember to:

  • Look out for soft sand, erosion, wash outs and drop-offs.
  • Avoid driving through sea water, foam or large pools of water. Driving conditions can change rapidly, and several vehicles have ended up swamped by water on this beach.
  • Check conditions before arriving, and if in doubt save your visit for another day.

Please follow the directions of National Parks and Wildlife Service personnel and signage. Do not drive over the frontal dune or any vegetation. Penalties apply for non-compliance.

Closed areas: Gan Gan 4WD entry temporarily closed - no beach front driving

Due to current weather conditions, beach front driving is temporarily closed today Wednesday 10 April 2024, and will be reviewed Monday 15 April 2024 in the Worimi Conservation Lands. This closure is from the Gan Gan entry at Anna Bay to the Lavis Lane entry at Williamtown. This is for visitor safety and to protect cultural sites. Large swell combined with high tides has made the beach front impassable for all vehicles.

The Gan Gan 4WD entry at Anna Bay is temporarily closed to all vehicles.

The following areas are open:

  • Lavis Lane entry
  • Fern Bay entry
  • Ganyamalbaa campground
  • Recreational Vehicle Area

Please note:  

  • Look out for soft sand, erosion, wash outs and drop offs.
  • Do not attempt to traverse the beach front at this time and, for safety, avoid driving through sea water or large pools of water. Driving conditions can change rapidly. Several vehicles on this beach have ended up in the ocean or swamped by water.
  • If in doubt, turn around and back track on the route you've driven, to exit the park.
  • Check conditions before arriving, and if in doubt save your visit for another day.
  • Do not drive over the frontal dune or any vegetation. Fines apply.

Staff will monitor conditions and reopen the beach for driving when the situation improves.

Safety alerts: Dangerous sea and unsafe swimming conditions

Please do not swim or enter the water at unpatrolled beaches in Tomaree National Park. Tragically, people have drowned while swimming at several locations within the park.

Many of the beaches are remote, unpatrolled and have dangerous rip currents, unexpected large waves and sudden drop offs. Ocean conditions can change rapidly.

Mobile phone service is also limited - you may not be able to call for help if you need it.

NPWS recommends swimming at patrolled beaches between the red and yellow flags at the following locations:

- Fingal Beach

- One Mile Beach

- Anna Bay

Closed parks: The Glen Road closed for essential landslip stabilisation

The Glen Road will be closed from Wednesday 13th  March to Tuesday 30th  April 2024 to allow contractors to undertake essential landslip and bridge repairs. The closure has been put in place for the safety of both visitors and the contractors. The planned works and this closure may be weather dependant.

NPWS is upgrading Yacaaba Headland walking track in Myall Lakes National Park between March and August 2024 to address extensive erosion and risks to public safety. The track will remain open for the majority of the upgrade. Closed areas: Mungo track detour due to flood damage

The boardwalk between Tamboi trail and Brambles Green campground is closed due to flood damage.

Walkers on the Mungo Track can take the detour at Mungo Brush. Please follow the walking track to the beach and then walk south for 4km. Take the slashed management trail which connects the beach to Mungo Brush Road to re-join the Mungo track.

Box Beach carpark is closed to vehicles from 10pm to 5am daily. The gate will be locked during these times.

The Box Beach access road is also closed to vehicles during this period.

  • Myall Lakes National Park is always open but may have to close at times due to poor weather or fire danger.

  • Park entry fees:

    $8 per vehicle per day.

    The park has coin/card operated pay machines at Mungo Brush campground. Day passes are also available from the Manning Great Lakes Area Office, Bulahdelah Visitor Information Centre and the Hawks Nest Newsagency. You can also pay for your visit via the Park’nPay app.
