Safety alerts: Rain damage to Packers Swamp Road

Packers Swamp Road, south from the Snowy Mountain Highway to the entry to Nunnock Campground, is only accessible to 4WD vehicles. The road is not suitable for 2WD vehicles.

Trail condition has deteriorated due to rainfall in March 2021. Please take care and drive safely.

The Wallagoot Lake boat club area in Bournda National Park will be closed for roadworks from Monday 22 March to Wednesday 31 March 2021. This may impact through traffic to Turingal Head. If you plan on driving in the area, please expect possible long delays.

Some areas in the Genoa section of South East Forests National Park are closed from Monday 15 March to Friday 16 April 2021, while hazardous tree management works are undertaken.

Closed areas: Roads closed for maintenance works

The roads to visitor areas within Mimosa Rocks National Park will be closed from Monday 19 April to Thursday 17 June 2021 for road maintenance. This includes:

  • Aragunnu Road
  • Picnic Point Road (including part of Wapengo Lake Road from the private property gate)
  • Bithry Inlet Road (Penders Road)
  • Middle Beach Road
  • Gillards Road
  • Nelson Lake Road / Nelson Beach Road

The roadworks will depend on the weather conditions during this time. It's a good idea to call ahead before travelling to Mimosa Rocks National Park to check for any closures or delays. These closures may be extended with an extension posted as soon as possible. These works are necessary to repair the road surface and drainage to ensure the roads provide suitable visitor access. Notification signs and temporary closures will be placed on each road until the works are completed.

Closed areas: Cowdroys Road closed

Cowdroys Road remains closed following a severe weather event that occurred over a number of days from 19th March 2021. The closure is in place to protect the road surface from vehicle damage. This area will be reopened once the road surface has dried and is stable for traffic. Further rainfall may result in this closure being extended, and any changes will be posted as soon as possible.

This road closure does not affect access to Gillards campground.

For visitor safety, campfires and solid fuel fires (wood, heat beads, charcoal, briquettes, hexamite) are not permitted at Middle Beach campground or picnic area.

The use of gas-fired, liquid fuel and electrical appliances will be permitted where:

  • The appliance is under the direct control of an adult
  • The appliance is placed or located in an area where there is no combustible material within 2m
  • There is an adequate water supply to extinguish fire, should it start next to the appliances.
  • It is not a Total Fire Ban

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is conducting a baiting program using fresh meat, manufactured baits and CPEs containing 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of foxes and wild dogs. The program will be ongoing and continuous from Monday 4 January to Friday 4 June 2021.

The baited parks, reserves and state conservation areas include:

  • Ben Boyd National Park
  • Bournda National Park
  • Bournda Nature Reserve

There will be signs at all baiting locations.

Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW national parks and reserves. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs in the vicinity must be restrained or muzzled and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Safety alerts: Wet weather road condition advice

Roads in Mimosa Rocks National Park may become wet and slippery following rainfall or thunderstorms. Some sections of these roads may become temporarily impassable to 2WD vehicles without warning due to rain, thunderstorms or vehicle damage. Access will be affected until conditions improve.

Roads that may be affected include:

  • Aragannu Road
  • Middle Beach Road
  • Gillards Road
  • Bithry Inlet Road
  • Nelson Lake Road
  • All other dirt roads within the park

Plan you trip:

  • Always check the NSW National Parks alerts page for up to date information on closed parks and safety alerts
  • Check the weather forecast before setting out and during your visit/stay. Consider altering or delay your trip if weather conditions change.
  • Tell family or friends where you are going and when you expect to return and let them know you have returned.
  • Know your vehicle limits before you travel. Consider getting NRMA roadside assistance before you go or call 1311 22.
  • Take enough supplies for your visit/stay and take extra supplies to cover unexpected delays. This includes a first aid kit, warm clothing/blankets, food, water and medications.
  • Download apps-  The Emergency Plus app will help you contact emergency services. Use the Fires Near Me app to check for bushfires in NSW before you go and during your trip, especially in summer. Please note these apps only work when you have mobile reception.

If conditions deteriorate roads within the park (including those accessing visitor areas and camping grounds) may be closed to traffic at short notice.

Waratah Road North in South East Forests National Park is closed due to planned bridge works. You can still access Pheasants Peak track head via Waratah Road South off Coolangubra Forest Way.
